I apologize. I'll be more definitive: It is/was the only one I've ever had. I did have dealings with a couple of them in college, but only in a somewhat-dedicated and barely-studious fashion. I looked at something through a scanning electron one at a friend's lab in Japan, but I was only visiting. :cool May still have my old one somewhere, though... I'll wait fo rthe Doctor to chime in again. If you have any other hunches, I think I'd prefer they not be aired publicly, if you don't mind terribly. It is my job we're talking about here. it has to do with Wha running some sort of business. The vague references to employees and the parts listed narrow the field down somewhat. Plus, I dont believe the Doc graduated from a university so it has to do with service since Doc hates salesman. My disdain for, and distrust of, salesmen has to do with some that regualrly tormented me in an earlier segment of my profession. Of course, I no longer have that problem. We're getting close, I can feel it. However, if someone does get it right I believe that the Doc will dance around the answer or PM the individual. :shifty Why Adeel, I believe you're right! I don't see how one person guessing right entitles everyone on here to know the whole story. :dunno If that was the case, I would have just told you all. :nono Thank you, Matt. Yes, much more "curiosity," and you lot will have to be promoted to "e-stalker" status! :eyecrazy Okay... I do believe that this apparently contagious curiosity comes from a good place, with no real harmful motives. So let me try, in general terms, to explain why I don't go into "shop talk" on the board. First, my job is, compared to most others, admittedly unusual, but also terribly vague. There's not really anything much out there to compare it to, so I'm often left having to explain it. And that gets old... quick. Second, for many people, finding out about it only leads to more curiosity, which in turn, spurs on yet more questions. Unfortunately, I've heard all the questions before, and again, they're old. I'd much rather spend the time enjoying a conversation with someone that I haven't had countless times before. At lunch with Matt, for instance, I can't tell you what a relief it was not to have the subject of work come up until the last few minutes we were there. Lastly, and probably more improtantly, however, is that sometimes, the curiosity some people have can cross the line into a very un-healthy realm, even to the extent that I (or worse, my family) can become the focal point of some seriously misplaced "attention." And no one, for any reason, should have to compromise the safety of themselves, or the people they love. So the minimal personal discussion isnt just a preference. It's an unfortunate necessity. As well as some of you may know each other, remember that we're still more than a bit removed from things. Like many of you might in ordinary circumstances, we simply minimize the discussion of personal details unless and until we meet folks in person, and suss them out. It's a level of comfort we just don't rise to until we have a better impression of who we're dealing with than we can get through a keyboard and monitor. Of course, the natural reply is "So come to a meet then!" and that's valid enough. But again, our situation makes that tricky to do: a) My day begins at 5:00 AM, so evening GTGs are tremendously difficult to swing; b) Due to the nature of my job, I often don't know what I'll be doing from one day to the next, so efforts toward planning ahead are dicey at best. I was going to come to dinner tomorrw, for instance, but with one phone call, my options were eliminated. Just the nature of the beast. c) The distance from our place to many of the meet sites is often on the order of 50 miles or more. I hardly expect any concession to be made in that area, it's just a fact that it's hard for us to get there, that's all. So in the end, I would ask you to please understand that for some, a certain level of privacy is a very genuine concern, for a multitude of reasons. It's not that we dislike anybody on here; Far from it! By and large, we've found the Georgia crowd to be a good natured, exceptionally good humored bunch. We throroughly enjoy hanging out and chatting with you all, and look forward to much more of it. :) And yes, we hope to get to a meet... someday. But until then, can we please find something else to discuss? Thanks much, DW punknamedjimmy 02-14-2005, 07:39 PM Not trying to be rude, but you didn't exactly help the situation by leading people on in the game. if you had just flat out said 'i'm not going to say, so don't worry about it' this would have ended a lot faster. That's fair to an extent, but then, I didn't think the "game" would evolve into a four page thread, and a group of folks comparing notes. I was only trying to be a good sport, but then it seemed the scale was escalating a bit. Sorry to pull the rug out, and apologies for any hurt feelings. And for those who understand, many thanks. DW bcart1991 02-14-2005, 07:48 PM Done. I was enjoying my quest, though...:( Carter punknamedjimmy 02-14-2005, 08:03 PM That's fair to an extent, but then, I didn't think the "game" would evolve into a four page thread, and a group of folks comparing notes. Doctor Wha 02-14-2005, 08:13 PM haha its the ga forum, everything escalates. i'm not upset, just saying... Heh heh! Yeah, that's true, isnt' it? Shoulda known! :D i have one last question though, do you enjoy doing what you do? That's a great question. And yes, I suppose I do. It's second nature, in a way, so I don't consciously think about it, but recently, I took the first vacation I'd had in 14 years. And I hadn't really noticed it had been that long. :eyecrazy So if time flies when you're having fun... I guess I must have been! ;) :) DW adeelpowers 02-14-2005, 11:49 PM I apoligize for bringing a topic that you didnt want to discuss into the spotlight. It seemed all in good fun and I hope I didnt strike a nerve by discussing a subject that annoys you on a daily basis. This forum is one that should be enjoyable and a sort of getaway from the rigors of daily life and if I intruded on that, once again, I am deeply sorry. I will not pester you on your profession anymore and try not to bring it up when we finally meet in person. :) Adeel Section8 02-14-2005, 11:52 PM I apoligize for bringing a topic that you didnt want to discuss into the spotlight. I stated that in the "Adeel is for the people" thread.
