View Full Version : Installfest! Sunday, March 20th at Karl's Shop!

It's been over a year since we've had one, so I feel it's about time!

We're going to have it at Karl's shop in Atlanta. We'll meet at 12:00 noon, drink beer, cookout, and install whatever parts you have!

If you've never been to an installfest, it's a great time to learn a little bit about your car and get help doing whatever odd jobs you need done.

Directions to Karl's:

Take 85 South past I-20
Take the next exit, Fulton St.
Take a right on Fulton street.
Cross over the railroad tracks.
Take a left on Metropolitan and cross over Ralph Abernathy.
Make your first right and left up to the call box...the code is 2285*
After passing through the gate make a U-turn towards the right. Make a left and the shop is on the right. Look for BMWs.

So, if you can make it, add your name to the list! Also, if anyone has a portable grill, please let me know if you can bring it!

Should have front control arm bushings, and an SSK by then needing to get put in - and I'd like to make use of the paint booth. Tell me how this booth works, do you have paint guns n such, how does the 'paint' need to arrive? Do you have a/the tool for e46's to get those bushings in/out?

BYOB in effect!
Lemme know if you have internet (or even better wireless) by the meet, I can bring a few laptops so folks can play some if they like.

i might have an EVO 3 SSK (undecided!) to install then. also, how hard are springs to install? what is required? i am just guessing, but do they then need to be aligned?

zeit00

Jason - I have a small booth.. Could fit like 5-6 bumpers. I do have paint guns as well. I don't think painting will be good during the installfest due to the movement that will be going on.. But, we can talk about that off line. The front control arms I am not 100% sure of.. But I have a press and should be able to remove/install any bushing.

I should have internet by the install date.. But it depends on a few other things.

Chris - Without matching struts/shocks I would not install short springs. Your shocks will be overworked and will need to be replaced soon after. And yes you will need an alignment.. and after you replace your shocks.. You will need another one. Which is a waste of money.

:( Now I have to make decisions. the 20th is the same date as the PCA autocross. Its a relatively late starting one too... first car out at 1. I really need to get the 3 sorted before the real autocross season starts. (BMW CCA and perhaps SCCA.) SCCA season doesn't get rolling until mid march, BMW CCA late march.

Kyle, you going to step up and take over the "fast guy in B" spot in BMW CCA? I have a feeling AA in bmw cca is going to take a crapload of effort this season. We need to go find a parking lot for a test and tune. :devillook

For short shifter installs, shouldn't be much more than 30 minutes, and jack stands are fine. Just need to be able to fit under the car and get your hand in the right places. I've done it on ramps and even with just 2 wheels up on a curb.

Exhaust things can be a bitch if they are rusted, but pre-soaking in penetrating oil will solve many of the small problems. Dropping the drive shaft is cake though. Hell, most of the bits on the bottom of an E36 come apart fairly easily. The whole rear subframe will come down in under an hour.

For the guibo, dropping the exhaust helps, but I don't see why you would need to drop the drive shaft. Just unbolt it from the guibo, unbolt the guibo from the trans, and it slides out. (maybe remove the bolts on the center support bearing if you need play room, but probably not necessary.)

Springs and such on jack stands are fine too. I don't know why you would ever need to be "under" the car for installing springs. A spring compressor is a good thing to have though. :stickoutt

The bushings are easily pressed out for the front control arms. You could even do it with a bench vise and some pipe (or a large socket) if you really needed to.

The PCA autocross is Feb. 20th... the installfest says March 20th. And yes, I'll be out at the PCA event like you trying to get things sorted out for my B class BMWCCA domination. :stickoutt Hopefully I'll be able to take the class. At this point if I don't its because of me not being a good driver and not because my car isn't fast enough. Don't have any excuses anymore. :help

And yeah, AA is going to be pretty tough. I think Minsoo went with a TCK suspension setup on his Coupe to jump in there, plus the MINIs are going to be out in full force... and they just had a group buy on Hoosiers. ;)

Wow, its a good thing I can't read. :(
If all the mini's are on hoosiers then I'm going to need to do something for autocross tires too. Those bastards. I can't let those silly little windup toys be faster. Then minsoo on coilovers. <sigh> So far the *mod list* only consists of a LSD and then swapping to the .48 AR exhaust housing for the autocross days. Sounds like I'll need to consider suspension stuff too. I suppose I could sell the shifter kart and buy some motons. Or just run the shifter kart. :stickoutt

B class domination should be easy. All you have to do is drive faster than everyone else in B. That other guy in the mini (always forget his name) got pretty damn close to my times on a few occasions, so the mini is definately capable of it. You on hoosiers too?

Oh, and to tie this back into the topic... since the date has *changed* to march 20th :stickoutt I should be able to make it. I should also have all the fun bits bolted on my 325 by then, so I'll be very free for drinking and installing parts. :)

**edit:

** Delrin Carrier Bushings - You can eliminate the 25 degrees of carrier rotation (side-to-side movement of the aluminum shifter carrier) with our precision CNC'd UUC Motorwerks Delrin Carrier Bushings. These precision machined bushings replace the original flimsy rubber bushing (which degrades over time) at the front of the aluminum carrier. We have tried harder rubber and urathane but found them to be substandard and continued to allow the carrier to flex.

Because of the tight tolerances of a computer controlled milling machine, tolerances can be held to 0.001" (about the width of a human hair) to ensure a perfect fit. We use only high quality, medical grade, teflon impregnated, heat resistant delrin for our bushings. Sure, it's more expensive and overkill, but to us, using only the best makes the best product.

Installation requires the removal of the carrier.

I swapped an engine myself with just a socket set, jackstands, jack and engine hoist! A lift isn't needed for almost anything, just makes stuff a lot easier than lying on your back and fighting with something.

Oh yea - get the delrin carrier bushings, they rock compared to the squishy rubber bushings. In fact, I'd be inclined to say they make more of a difference than the SSK itself.

Well that other guy in the black MINI moved to West Virginia so I doubt he'll be much competition. There is a Z3 that's pretty quick around the courses though, so that'll be my main competition (from last year anyway). And I'm not on R Comps... just running those Falken Azenis Sports... pretty much the tire of choice in SCCA street tire classes. I'm halfway working on getting a 2nd set of "street" wheels and then getting some r comps... but that won't be for a little while anyway. :az

And if you go for some autocross tires and Motons (club sports?) then I think you'd be daamn tough to beat in AA.

I have a brand new GRAF waterpump from bimmerparts.com

make offer!!!

With that said, I highly recommend the factory BMW waterpump over the GRAF. side-by-side, the factory part is that much better. (hence the "make offer" statement)

By valve job might you mean just adjusting the valves? :stickoutt If so, then yes, I've done it and it's cake. M20's are beautifully simple beasts. Timing belt, tensioner, etc are all very easy. Most important part is to make damn sure you get the timing set properly. Put the belt where you think it should go, tension it, then spin the motor over a couple times and check again. Most find they *thought wrong* by about a tooth. ;)

If you meant valve guides and such, yeah, we'd have time to do it at an install fest, but it's relatively time consuming. ;) I have a spare set of valve guides if you really want to do it. :stickoutt Easy way would be to pull the head and do it on a bench. Time for the head coming off and going back on would be ~5 hours. maybe 3-4 if its not me doing it by myself. Probably an hour or so for stripping the head, installing the guides, and putting it back together. I vote for not tearing down motors at an installfest though. :)

I have a brand new GRAF waterpump from bimmerparts.com

make offer!!!

With that said, I highly recommend the factory BMW waterpump over the GRAF. side-by-side, the factory part is that much better. (hence the "make offer" statement)

new waterpump for an e30 eta?
and how much better? would it affect it badly as per me driving the car about 40 -50 miles every day?
if its not that big of a difference then how about? i dunno 15$?

By valve job might you mean just adjusting the valves? :stickoutt If so, then yes, I've done it and it's cake. M20's are beautifully simple beasts. Timing belt, tensioner, etc are all very easy. Most important part is to make damn sure you get the timing set properly. Put the belt where you think it should go, tension it, then spin the motor over a couple times and check again. Most find they *thought wrong* by about a tooth. ;)

It's for an e36, sorry.

But if somebody wants to come out to the East side and meet me somewhere or wait for the next meet, $15 would be fine. if not, shipping will cost a good chunk of what the part is worth, LOL.

I compared the stock part vs the GRAF part. My findings:

- Took less effort to turn the factory part (gotta be worth atleast one HP, LOL)
- The iron impellar was just not very graceful looking when compared to my 97's stock metal impellar, or the new (better) plastic impellar. I doubt it flows as good.

I'm sure you can guess which one made its way into my car :)

Make sure and get there early, but these aren't terribly difficult. Just lots of unbolting and re-bolting.

I'm trying to get a bargain on a 2.8L Z3 engine (the alloy blocked M52 engine) I found up in PA. It's only 2 lbs heavier than the M20 in the car now, and when I remove the A/C parts it'll be a fair bit lighter. It'll be a better engine that I can tweak up in the future when I have more cash, but it'll be a lot more power and reliability in the now (since my ETA motor has at least 130k miles, though with the oil changes and maintnence I've done I have no doubt it'll last over 200k miles).

I'm just not sure i want to spend $500 (more or less) on a new clutch (and ltw flywheel since I'm in there already) and still have the same old motor in there which is going to be replaced anyways eventually. I want to spend as little money on stuff now that's going to come out later.

The ETA motor will then be ups for sale afterwards. :)

Fixed :)

To be honest, I'd like to get a block from one of those new Mg/Al blocked M56 (or is it M58?) engines. Those blocks have got to be incredibly light compared to the original Fe blocked M50s.

From VAC? I've seen their ad in Roundel. Tempting.

Is the M56/58 the 3.0L six? That would be pretty sweet to drop in the old E36 and maybe let Mike drop a little FI pixie dust on it...

Some parents wouldn't know a CAI sound if it bit them in the ass, but it does change the tone and volume of your car's induction sound, especially under large throttle openings.

In short, idk if the 'rents will notice. ;)

I'll be sure to show as well. I'll bring the pressure bleeder for the brakes also. If somebody wants super blue, you need to make sure you get it b4 sunday. I'm almost out.
If we're doing a clutch, make sure to get a couple of back-up exhuast nuts and bolts (manifold to pipes), a new set of 6 hex bolts, and a new plastic piece that the fork pivots on. I've got an alignment tool. Usually takes a few hours.

If anybody else needs any oem parts, let me know so I can get them from my wholesaler. I can order up until about 10 am sat and still get parts by 2 pm.

I'd also suggest anybody who is doing a fan delete should also do a water pump at the same time, unless you've recently done it. Don't forget coolant. :)

- Jason for this one.

I have a 'camshaft sensor' out and the car is running pretty darn rough.. Can't get it in till Tuesday to get worked on (under warranty, woot!), so I'm gonna try to 'garage' her until then.. Think I'm going to check the plug that the sensor failed on to make sure it didn't get fouled, and something else is going on.. (Car is hard to start, wants to conk out after starting until I get it driving for a minute.. and has a loss of power at low RPMs). Anyone car-wise that can explain exactly what's going on? (I can *guess* all day - Is the sensor out causing it to not fire properly on that cylinder, or maybe not at all, or just timing off, etc?)

I'm out for this installfest.. Possible I may grab the wife's jeep and come over to lend a hand, depending on how long my honey-do list gets now that my 'activity' for Sunday is scrapped.

Farq!!

Basically it just tells the ECU in what position the camshaft is at. So basically the car is guessing if the valves are open or closed. So its probably just flooding the car with gas all the time.. But that is just a theory.. I don't see why it has anything to do with a certain plug though.. :dunno

was just thinking if something had failed, I might be able to tell by checking the plugs. The code says what bank or side of the car and the cylinder# sensor that failed.

On the ride home.. It seemed pretty much normal, vastly different from earlier after the check code light flipped on. Your diagnosis sounds on target. :alright

Whew.. after my ATF scare last week, seeing a code flip up and feeling the car lurching - I was starting to get a little bugged..

So bring what you think you will need.. But I do have air tools, and a HUGE compressor.. so we should get things going quick..

If I had anything to install, I'd bring my own tools and supplies. That way, you're not waiting for the six people in line to use the #17 socket to finish.
Way I see it, it's like you invited a bunch of people to YOUR place to help you fix your car. The benefit is that some of these guys have already done whatever you're wanting to do so they have real world advice.
Karl has said it already...he's got tools but it's not a fifteen-bay shop so there's not enough stuff to work on everybody's car at once.

Besides that, is there a tire changing machine at this shop tomorrow? I need to pop my tires off the rims and swap em around to opposite sides / rims (the only negative I see with the staggered ZHP setup....arrggg no simple front to back, etc...)
