Looking at getting rid of the caddy for a Liberty. I know it's a downgrade but my driveway is teh suxor, and she like the Liberty's. Any godd or bad things about them that you guys know of?

Oh yeah, this also means that whatever is leftover off the value of her car goes to a truck to tow my BMW around the Mid-Atlantic reigon :buttrock

I got nothing on the Liberty.....other than not knowing why you'd buy that over a Subaru or, well, just about anything else. Although it is pretty cool that you can get a diesel now.

why not talk her into buying something a little bigger, then con her into letting you put a trailer hitch on it to pull your RACING CAR

No, that would un-ethical. :nono

They are pretty nice for a daily driver and highway cruiser. I have had a couple as rental cars when going up to NJ for business. It has decent manners and gets ok gas mileage for a 4x4. The independent front suspension really helps the vehicles comfort level and composure on road.

The one little thing I didn't like (and this nit picky) is the plate that covers the front seat hinge (where the back of the bucket seat pivots) is large and the lower seat cushion has little side padding so you end up pinching your leg on it when getting out of the car (this was on the 04's, not sure if they fixed that) and it could smart.

I don't know much on the tech or spec of it though,

Pete

I already have a Subaru, she wants a small truck, and liked her old Jeep.

That is all it would be used for, a commuter for her.

liberty is a very nice car I worked for courtesy jeep for a while and they were pretty reliable. The only common problem I saw with it was the back door lock cylinder went bad but that was on the 02s They may have fixed that problem by now. just don't waste your money on the renegade version. I think it is a couple grand for the extra lights and plastic and they are noisey on the hwy.

you should talk to your selling dealer to let you test drive the car overnight and let her go grocery shopping with it, to see if she likes it.

if you wan't a good deal and to deal with a nice person talk to dave waddy or travis at courtesy jeep for sales. and gus or dennis in service. Gus=advisor dennis=svc manager

tell them Stephane sent you.

Why not a used RX300? Long-term -- more reliable, better gas mileage, safer, nicer vehicle, and better resale.

Over priced. The only ones in the price-range we are looking at are the 99's. My buddy who is a Lexus master tech told me to stay away from the 99's, they had some bugs that were worked out in the 00+ model years.

can you ask your master tech friend about GS400 and GS430, which years to avoid? Is the GS400 a better buy or should I get the GS430. From what I understand, it's basically the same car ... bigger displacement; but, same HP.

Which would he recommend?

What about a 2000-2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 (HO) <-- get the HO, this way, she unknowingly is purchasing a TOW vehicle, hehehe ... Those are around the $17-21K range.

Call me this weekend, he is coming down from Jersey. You can ask him any question you want, I'm sure he'd be glad to answer any of your questions. I'll PM you my number.

You think I would be safe towing w/the GC?

Everyone i know with a liberty is happy with it -- but most of them have bought it in the last year or two so there hasn't been much time for anything to go wrong. They have that 7 year/ 70k mile powertrain warranty which is nice (if they're having slow months sometimes they bump that up to 10 years /100k  )

When is she looking to buy? If she's looking in the april timeframe I may have a very good connection for you at a jeep dealer. :)

Has she looked at the xterra? When Molly was looking for a car she considered the liberty -- the xterra ended up being cheaper though. She's only had it a year and a half, but she loves it.

Jed can correct me or maybe marshall can, I believe Marshall towed his cars with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 4.7 HO is more HP and torque than the base model (hence why I suggested the 4.7 HO).

If you get your car to race weight  ... you look to be around 180-190 lbs. So, your car can be around 2650, plus trailer and you are at ???? lbs. (I don't know what a trailer should weigh).

That's well within the limits of the JGC I would think. Pete, jterp, others? What do you think?

Class 3 hitch -- and if you can be around 3500 lbs total ... that would be more than sufficient I would say. Crap, I towed my 69 SS Camaro with my 91 Jeep 4.2L islander from urbana-champaign up to IL -- and that handled it. Although, it took a while to get up to speed and stopping was interesting, hehe.

Pulling that much weight i think you would want a trailer with its own brakes and a hitch with a brake controller -- but the V8 Grand cherokee would have no problem pulling that.

My dad had a grand cherokee the first year they were available with a V8 (i think it was a '92 or a '93) and we used to pull that big 18' steel trailer that I had at VIR with an old B body MOPAR on it -- the trailer weighs 1800 lbs and the car weighed close to 4k. The Jeep pulled well everywhere except on the really steep mountain sections of Rte 70 in wv.... but anything short of a diesel pickup is going to have trouble there.

With a light trailer (1000 lbs) and a light car (2800 lbs.) you should have no problem pulling -- I would definately reccomend brakes though.

My car will probably be around 2800 lbs, and trailer I figure about 2000 for a trailer. I was definitely going to get one w/brakes. I'll talk to her about the GC tonight. Either way we NEED a 3rd street car to rotate in to keep miles down. Maybe a little Civic or Imprezza RS?

You'll be fine at 4800 -- especially with the HO v8. Hell, I towed almost 4000 with a dinky little v6.

My Wife is in the 4th year of owning hers and has had no problems with the exception of a recall they had, I believe it was the cv joints and obviously Jeep took car of that.

We live in an area of Mpls where parking can be difficult at times and she loves that the turining radius is so small and the overall size of the vehicle makes for easy parking.

I ended up liking it alot more than I thought, granted it's still not my first choice but for the money it's been a great vehicle for us. A few things I have noticed (for waht they're worth):

Seat bottoms are fairly shallow, I am 6'4 and could use a little more support underneath but I got used to it.

Window controls took a while to get used to (don't know about the new models but hers are in the middle by the center arm rest).

Even with the standard tires with the least aggressive tread the thing goes through snow like crazy, I've never even been close to getting stuck in it.

Cargo room is decent depending on what your needs are.

Gas mileage I thought was just ok, she got the limited with the 6 banger in it and it averages about 16-17mpg in the city, hell my M3 gets close to 20 in the city with spirited driving.

Overall I was pleasantly suprised with it and would recomend one based on my experience with it.

Good luck with your decision.

Liberty's are great...I've been selling them since they first came out. Haven't seen any major problems out of them. The biggest competitor I've had has been the X-terra, considering it's the only other SUV in the cute-ute category w/a real 4wd. The Xterra now has the same amount of hp at 210 but it has more torque at 246. Liberty has 210 hp and 235lb/ft of torque. Liberty's big advantage is premium fuel is not required as it is in the super-charged X-Terra engine. Snow...Goes anywhere. 2 different choices of 4wd..command-trac and Selec-trac.. Don't even consider a 4cyl...Liberty is too heavy for the 4cyl.. It also has a 5,000 lb towing capacity. Oh yeah, if you compare it to a 99-04 Gr. Cher the Liberty has more head and shoulder room! The 99-04 Gr cher's can tow 5,000 lbs w/a 4.0 I6. The 4.7 and 4.7HO can tow 6,000 lbs and 6,500 lbs.
Just as a reference, I can take any veh out of our Chrysler/Jeep lineup for up to 4,900 miles as a demo. I'm on my 3 liberty in a row... They handle well, have an extremely tight turning radius, and have excellent visibility.

Haha Justin, I was thinking the same damn thing! I had the M3 for a 2 years and now Im selling the Vette after 9 months and the Subaru after 6. :help Perhaps since James has had his M3 for a record amount of time I figured the MA region needed some fresh blood.
