Windshield Wipers start going when car is started

and then they just stop on their own after a few minutes. They dont care where they stop either. middle, top or bottom of windshield. I have to flip the switch up and down a few times to get them to start up again. Any ideas on what is causing this? 1992 325i! Thanks everyone
