View Full Version : Starter Options
blitzed310 01-28-2005, 07:59 PM I think we have discussed this before but I need to know for sure which other models will fit the M10. I want something with more torque. Anyone done this before?
Is the E30 M3 starter the best out of the E30's?
Yonkers320is 01-28-2005, 10:07 PM I think so. It has more torque and weights less than the 320 starter.
E30 M3 starter will be your best bet for an M10... Actually i just bought one for my 2002... An M20 starter won't work because its not direct drive like the M10 starters... Stock M10 starter = 20lbs...
blitzed310 01-29-2005, 02:51 AM I think I might use one from the E32 or E34...
Al Canuck 01-29-2005, 06:45 AM M30 starter is physically the same size as the M10 starter, but has more torque. The S14 starter is smaller, but has more torque. M30 starter is cheaper.

blitzed310 01-29-2005, 10:50 PM Yeah now where to get one
I have a source CJ... talk to me on AOL...
blitzed310 03-24-2005, 12:04 AM So anyways I got the E30 M3 starter a few weeks ago and today I got to install it. I was very surprised at the difference in size and in wieght. You can see for yourself. Starts much faster now.
AE101 03-24-2005, 01:07 AM nice.
is it a straight forward swap in?
blitzed310 03-24-2005, 01:29 AM Yup a direct swap, took me about an hour and a half or so with removing the airbox, starter bracket, and the intake boot.
Yep, i did mine on my 2002 about 2 days ago now and it cranks hard! Easy swap too!
uberpanzer 03-24-2005, 03:47 AM What's the weight difference?
MattE21 03-24-2005, 04:17 AM i just put a brand new m10 starter in the red car a few months back. the parts car came with a brand new one installed. damn that bitch is heavy!
jrcook320 03-24-2005, 06:31 PM cool. If my starter ever goes out you know what I'll be looking for. :)
jjgbmw323 03-24-2005, 07:43 PM Will this work on the e21 323i engine?
Echo did you install this starter on your 323i?
later,
Joe

"Yep, i did mine on my 2002"
Joe, won't work on an M20... The M20 uses a direct drive starter where everything else (including the M10, and S14) use a gear reduction. Or maybe i have it reversed on which uses which, but u can't use it on your 323...
Joe,
Later model 325i starter is the light weight one to use for your 323, gear reduction, permenant magnet just like the E30 M3.
I have one in my 323, less starter draw easy on the electrical system..

Oahu320iS 03-25-2005, 02:17 AM I've read this thread with much interest. I was planning on replacing my starter this Saturday. I already had my friend order me up an E21 starter, so I called him back and had him get the M3 instead. Not too much of a price difference, $115.00 for the E21 and $135.00 for the M3. I think it will be $20.00 well spent. I'm also replacing my throw-out bearing so hopefully the starter will be easier to get to with the tranny out. I'll let you guys know how the install goes.
Aloha,
Mike H
uberpanzer 03-25-2005, 04:51 AM Ummm...starter is on top of the motor, so tranny being out shouldn't make a difference. But good luck with it, and tell us how it goes anyway!
Hope you all have a pair of 17mm box ends...
jrcook320 03-26-2005, 10:44 AM Of course... and they're rachetting :buttrock
topgun 03-28-2005, 08:12 PM Anyone know of a good source for the E30 M3 starter?

blitzed310 03-28-2005, 09:34 PM I've been going here alot lately nelson@usedbmwparts.com
Ask for Nelson, and tell him CJ sent you, he'll treat you right.
topgun 03-30-2005, 03:39 PM Would like to double check the part number before ordering. Is the correct E30 M3 starter for '83 320i Model # SR 43X?
Thanks
blitzed310 03-30-2005, 08:04 PM Anybody interested in an 89 E30 M3 starter with a brand new solenoid, and the old working solenoid let me know. $75 + shipping. The solenoid itself is $45. Yes the starter works, had it tested at Kragen and all is in good working order
