Q for the Climate controls. Why do some 95 740I have the wheel fan speed and some 95 have the digital fan speed on the climate control? Is it b/c of a later build date? Is it possible to swap climate control from Wheel to Digital?
The numbers are fading, so I figure I might as well get the Digital NEWER look.

The digital is a bit slow. It would be nice if it would scroll faster if you hold the button down longer.

BTW that dash is trashed. Looks like they put a cigarette out in the OBD port cover!

So the digital is SLOW but It'll work if I swap it? Anyone know of a place (if I decide to keep my wheel) where they can repair the LCD so the numbers will be visible.

It's not really slow. It just isn't fast. Temp changes with each touch of the button, and scrolls when held. Just not fast enough for my tastes.

The Digital is the newer one. It regulates power of the airflow independently, while you have to change airflow on the old one yourself. The digital also is less likely to loose it's display. only very few of those have pixelproblems. You can exchange them w/o problems. Just plug in the new one.

Hmm, say's it's a "SALVAGE" title. Due to the updated front-end I'd say it was in a wreck and then re-built. Most people wouldn't go through the expense of the '01 headlights with the OEM HID otherwise. Pretty clean outside other than some rub damage to the right front fender and some condensation in the rf headlight.

I think when you upgrade from the "wheel" IHKA to the "digital" IHKA unit...the digital unit needs to be "programmed" ...thus the car needs to be hooked up to the DIS or MoDIC machine to program the unit to operate the AC compressor.

Or maybe I'm off base and I'm confusing upgrading from the digital unit with the "REST" button to the unit with the "MAX" button. Which , by-the-way...would be the digital IHKA I'd upgrade to if swapping out. Having the "MAX" button gives you a one-touch feature in the summer of having the fan go straight to high and air/flaps go to recirculate so you can cool the cabing quicker. The IHKA with the "REST" button requires you to manually turn the the fan up and push the recirc button. Oh yeah, the MAX button also will blow warmed air into the cabin (just like the REST button) when the ambient exterior temp falls below a certain point...so that you can stay warm in the cabin without the car running. :D

(you may be able to find this info in the archives here...but if not...it definintely has been discussed over on Rf's e38 message board and will have past discussions in the archives there.)

Nope your on track....

It does not matter if you currently have or go to the "digital" unit, IT NEEDS TO BE PROGRAMMED!

Ok, so how do I program this? I really hate the wheel and I want to upgrade. How and when do I program, after installation?

Mine was taken care of by CPO, but I'll tell you what I know from my experience.

First, you can't programm it unless you have a modic.

So, you can order the part have them install it and program it. OR, if your trying to save on labor [this whole job should take less than an hour, you or them], install the part your yourself in the parking lot of the shop you use and then drive it in to have it programmed.

OK, your gonna have to spend about $15K for the programming device [modic] and I don't know where you can get it, the good thing though is you will also be able to program your key and stuff. I wish I had yo' money :) .

Just take the IHKA you're buying, plug it in, when it doesn't work go to the dealer and have them program it to your car.

HAHA......IHKA is what? The climate control? So buy the climate control and have them program it when I buy it? Do I install it first and everything and then go to BMW? How much will they charge me?
