Gonna head down to New Orleans at the end of April with my buddies for a bachelor party. Don't know the area or bars. All I've heard is that is fun.

Let the suggestions rip!

Thanks!

The Quarter is fun, but aka a tourist trap. Just ask some of the local chicks where the good bars are at. Grew up just outside of Orleans, havent stayed current with the good spots.

Mandina's on Canal street is a good casual creole/southern style resturant. Been going there since I was 3. Several high end places too. Commanders Palace is very good, pricey though.

Dont walk down any dark alleys or alone anywhere in the quarter. Mugging is still quite common. O and the cabbies will try to rip you with their short cuts which are longer than a direct route somewhere.

Sorry about the little info.

the always popular bourbon street is cool. i went to NO for x-mas and i had a pretty good time. but expect to pay up each night for valet parking at the hotels. the local restaurants are damned good, but a quite pricey.

You really can't go wrong with any of the restaurants in NO; they are all great, even the hole-in-the-wall places. Definately hit up Cafe du Monde for some beignets. Get a muffelatta at Central Grocery. Antoine's and Brennan's are both good, and not as pricey as Commander's. Liuzza's is great. As far as bars go, Pat O'Brien's is no good, not even for the hurricanes. For clubs, got to Checkpoint Charlie's or the Howlin Wolf.

Howlin Wolf is a good place to see bands - Checkpoint charlies is a dance club (not my cup of tea; but no big deal).

There's a Burrito Joint on Magazine (uptown) called JUan's Flying Burrito - really good burrito's and cheap too - mostly a local place. (I used to live there)

See who's playing at Tipitina's or the House of blues (those are also really good places to go see bands.

If you're going at the end of April - that's also JAzzfest weekends (last 2weekends in april, 1st of MAy) out at the fairgrounds/horsetrack... too many bands will be there to list - but it's impossible to go to jazzfest and have a bad time. (guess it's possible; but i've never had a bad time)

Bourbon smells like urine, vomit and stale beer; people go there to get drunk out of their ever loving minds - and act like fools during the process - yes - stay away from dark alleys people do still get mugged there - keep your wallet in your front pocket. secure your valuables in the Hotel's safe.

For breakfast I recommend the Crystal Room at Le PAvillion (a hotel on Poydras)

and for a cheap breakfast - P and G Diner - it's on Rampart I Believe - the street that runs parallel to and on the north side of lepavillon - about a block towards canal.

Le Pavillion is Pricey - but worth it - omelet chef; great stuff.

Next to Josephine street :D

If this is a bachelor party the quarter is probably your best bet --tourist trap though it is. Everything is concentrated there
--nudie bars, regular bars, hand grenades from tropical isle, hurricanes from anywhere (though at Pat O's you can get a souvenir 8x10 B&W of you and your buddies partying),
marie laveau's voodoo shop,
goth/industrial bar (the Dungeon --opens at midnight),
S&M bar on Rampart St. (dress appropriately),
Oz and the corner bar are good for dancing (they are gay bars),
the Cat's Meow for Karaoke,
and I can't remember the name of the place, but it has a huge picture window you can look in --they coax young ladies up on stage for body painting and the audience gets to watch, usually the chick likes to bounce around for a few minutes afterward to show off her new 'artwork' too
Panda Bear lingerie shop is good for both novelty and 'real' sex paraphernalia

Stay away from the real rip off places like Love Acts, Pierre's, and the bars with the faded nudie pics by the front door --not worth your time or money.

Awesome!!! Sounds like this will be a good time! And this is pretty close to Bourbon Street, etc?

How's the Popeye's spicy CAJUN chicken down there??? Better than the stuff up here? ;)

Indeed, walking distance, it's on the edge of the Quarter.

Popeye's....hahaha, that's local boy Al Copeland's chain...but it's still a chain...probably pretty standard across the board. What you might want to do root out some seedy grocery store fried chicken for a more 'local' experience.. :D

I will 2nd Le Pavillon. Great breakfast buffett and it was actually cheap when I was there several years ago. We were staying there for the Mardi Gras Gran Prix, walking down to shoneys for breakfast thinking the Crystal room would be too expensive. Lol, it was like $8 all you can eat back in 94. Also recommend staying there. Nice hotel. I left 3 shirts hanging and they cleaned, pressed and mailed them to me a week later. No charge :)

Another great place, even though I havent been there since 95 or so, is Cooter Browns at the end of st charles. Take the trolley to the end, then walk across the street to cooter browns, try to drink you way around the world then eat a few cooter dogs. Good times :buttrock mmm abita TurboDog rocks too. Brewed in Abita LA, just up the road from New Orleans. Tours are still available I believe.
