Just informing everyone of the BMW trackday on NPR.

Long or short track?

If it's long, they won't allow 'verts. :(

I've got a contact with the State Police and have been talking with him about having a driver's ed day at their new JESTC track. The delta region SCCA is going to be doing their events at the EVO area of State Police, instead of Lamar, from now on. But as of yet, I don't know if the JESTC/EVO areas are the same.

I need an excuse for a trip back home...

Hopefully it is the long, the short loop is worthless...sorry Brashland :stickoutt Hopefully I will be there.

BTW, its CENLA that runs at the EVO center, which is a great facility. I ran at the Jan 30th event there. Delta runs at Zephyr. Anyone going this weekend?

:corkysm59 You're right. I'm reading too much at the NO S2000 chapter board and getting my regions mixed up.

Cgregory, how many miles on your Yoko's? My rears went bald in 7 months from daily driving. Needless to say, I won't buy them again.

I only have 1500 miles and one auto-X on them right now, so no noticeable wear yet. I have ES100s on my Porsche also, and those have been on it since right after I bought it in November of 2003. It has only seen about 4,000 miles in that time, but they were all hard driven and have shown only neglible wear.

I have heard though that ES100s work much better on lighter cars, and mine weigh in at 2500#s and 2300#s, respectively.

My ES 100s pooped out with less than 10k....

Track day sounds good...I had to miss the last lapping day there and I am really in need of a 'speed' outlet if you know what I mean!

Really? I had about 10K on mine before my other car pooped out and they looked nearly new. I thought they were wearing well. Disadvantages I saw was their extreme hatred of colder temperatures, very stiff ride, and tramlining. The later two are probably good for performance on most surfaces, but in Tampa the roads are rough and they like to run lines on the interstate into siderails and curbs. They've almost had me a couple times on my tramline resistant tires. The advantage is that they stuck pretty good once warm, and the feel was rock solid. They were on a FWD car with a good amount of power, so judging grip on acceleration is difficult.

Sorry for harassing your forum guys, just noticed a reference to drag racing and a reply by Baby M. :) When I saw that she referenced tires I was considering, I figured I'd contribute.

Of course, after getting the ///M 10K for a set of tires doesn't seem that bad. :stickoutt

:D

I really liked the performance of the Yokos but I just can't be spending that kind of money several times a year for new shoes. Lemming and I have commiserated about these particualr tires before too!!

To be fair, I had 2 DEs on the tires. here is what they looked like after the second one:

I really like the way they handle, but I completely agree with you.

Maybe I'm not completely being fair. I did do 2 trips on the Dragon with them. So that's 22 miles of some fesity driving.

Glad to see that some BR people do actually post here.

I think there is ONE hotel withing 10-15 miles. This track is in the middle of nowhere; just miles of sugar cane fields all around.

Donaldsonville is like a half-hour from Baton Rouge, and that being a college
-type city, there are about 2000 hotels within a 3-mile radius of LSU. Pick one.

Josie - that's more like it. Now you may continue with you tire discussion. I like my ES100s. They're getting bald, and I've had them on right at a year. No track days, but a couple mountain drives and around 15-20k of daily driving.

Usually you can just be nice and ask for a ride. There might be a difference since I am female, but the guys usually seem flattered that someone wants to ride with them.

When I went to the FCA meet in 02 i wore a Ferarri umbrella girl shirt and got asked to pose with a lot of the cars --including a testarossa (they made a joke about it ;cause I had dyed my hair red) and a schweet GTO (I have that one hanging on my wall)

Im not sure if they check your I.D. or not? I look a little young and I just paid my way, signed the waiver and i was up for the next heat. Actually I think you may just nead a valid license and the money to play. If for some crazy a$$ reason they wouldn't let you on the track, it would be a great meet to check out some nice bimmers. Im sure there will be some other nice track cars out there as well. Where in LA do you live?

A friend just picked up a S4 Cab V8 and was kind enough to let me drive it last night. Although she seemed a tad heavy, and I wasn't real fond of the tiptronic, that is one fine ride. Shortly after I handed over the keys, we got pulled over on the Atchafalaya Basin not once but twice in <5 miles. The first cop (sheriff) bought it that we were getting an ER doctor to the hospital because he had just been paged (which we were). The 2nd one (LSP) didn't buy it and wrote us for 76 in a 60. I'm going to try to get him to take it to the track day. Uh scratch that, just remembered you have to have an affixed roll bar. Providing I'm not at work I'll be there in my M3.

I've corresponded a bit with Harold Petit who is a contact for the event. As suspected I won't be able to run with my vert, NOR will I be able to do ride alongs (I found that a bit odd, but OK).

He did say that there will be 'touring laps' at lunch which will allow me on the track but at sub 60 mph speeds.

I don't know if I should be happy that I'll be allowed on the track at all, or if I should be bummed that I can't even do ride alongs.

Either way, I'm going to volunteer my time and help out.

Well, I never hooked up with anyone on here at the DE so here's my rundown on the day:

There were a bunch of cars that were running including a several different types of BMWs:
M series Z3s
M3 series both 2 door and 4 door
regular 3 series
a first generation and second generation M5
a 1978 (I think he said) 2002 M with 175,000 miles on it
318ti + others
a lone corvette
an Infinity sedan
some kick azz spec miatas (NEVER under estimate what a miata can do!)
Ferrari 355 Challenge
older Porsche 911
bunch of Porsche Boxsters
RX-7
and even a Mazda 3 station wagon with dealer tags still on (LOL!, "I'd like to return my purchase please.")
and the blue spec M3 listed below

I was doing flags for corner 10 which was the last 1 of 3 passing zones, so I got to see some cars carry some speed into turns 11-14 (known as the peanut).

During lunch they announce they're doing the 'lunch laps' so I head out in my convertible.

So I take off in my car (Izzy I call her). First lap I take it easy to get the feel of the big track. Second lap I follow an M3 and spec miata to see the lines they take, third lap I have basically no one around me so I'm working it to the best of my restrained ability, fourth lap I'm bouncing my car off the rev limiter in 3rd on the straight away (90+ MPH before turn 1!), watching the slides in the tight corners, smelling the exhaust, this is AWESOME!!! I did 2 or 3 more laps pushing it as far as I could without getting too close to any sort of spin out or loss of control (the real tight S/technical area was toward the pits so you try to behave around there). About 6 laps all together on the 1.8 mile track, so I'm pretty happy, never lost control, had a good time.

Then they say they're letting the instructors and corner men take rides if they want them. Well, the 355 Challenge Ferrari was up on the list, but when they said we could go in the race M3, that was it!

(BIG PICTURE) http://members.cox.net/ashlandj/pictures/28MracePoster1600.jpg

The owner took me on about 5-6 laps on that thing: sparco seats, 5 point harness, full cage, racing tach, basically nothing is left of the original interior, this is an honest to friggin goodness racecar. I was amazed not only at how the car handled, but the driving skills the guy had. The way he and the car took these 90 degree turns at crazy speeds, the acceleration, the noise, it was nuts.

By the end of the day there were only a handful of spin outs and cautions that had to be thrown. There were 12 heats all together and most heats lasted some 15-20 minutes each. Every heat had an instructor available for each car and I believe most drivers were able to get about as much track time as they wanted.

It was one heck of a day. Doing a fully day of corner work for those few minutes in that M3 was well worth it.

I was really hoping to meet some of my bimmerfest.com and bimmerforums.com friends, but maybe we can arrange a dinner out for the group.
