I'm looking at a 2001 X5 4.4 with 69K miles on it, is it even worth looking at? The only reason I'm remotely interested is, that he's taking my car at retail and trading it, so I pay like 10K and walk away....

Thats pretty much what I am looking for as well. What are you trading?

I'm trading in my 2000 328ci, I found out that they sold the 2001, but are getting a 2000 with 66K, not sure if I want to go that far back, I'm thinking I should be able to get a 2002 or up with BMW warranty (both maintance and bumper to bumper) for around the same price, because the 4.4 resale value is dropping like a rock, especially since gas mileage is poor, allot of people are opting for the 3.0

As an ex BMW salesman I would have to say the x5 4.4 is one of the most popular vehicles in the bmw line up. Any CPO we had on the lot would not stay long. I would have to say yes you can get good deals out there but as far as re-sale dumping... Remember it's a BMW not a Suburban...

Yah I haven't seen a break in X5 prices since they came out. They still bring big money in auctions and more so now being winter and all. I figured I would wait for the "spring price break" which really isn't that good but its a little better than buying now.

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting!!

I understand it's a bmw, but 15 mpg, allot of people are dumping and picking up 3.0 or a Volvo. As for resale value, if I can pick up a 2003 38600, there is a problem with the re-sale value, the reliability of the bmw has been damaged with electrical problems in the x5 series.

Well there is no way in hell I'd trade a 4.4 for a 3.0 or for gods sake one of those volvo's ... I don't know where you got allot of people from but I have yet to hear a mad rash of people dumping their 4.4's and running to Volvo.. Lol.. Car seems like a good deal..

I agree the 4.4 is sweet, I want to get one, but everyone lowballs me on my car, so I keep having to back out, this guys is trading retail to retail, and since the price is retail, I should be walking away with a good deal. He is getting a 2000 with 66K, but I'm looking for a 02 or up model and hoping to find someone who will do retail to retail with me, one of the frustrating points is there are vehicles in a decent price range that I would walk away paying between 10 to 15K, which I don't mind if they did retail to retail. By the way if I bought a used car from a non-bmw dealership and it has warranty left on it, both maintance and bumper to bumper, can I buy the extended maintance and bumper to bumper from bmw?

Be sure to get a warrantee. In my direct experience, the X5 is considerably below BMW's normal standards for reliability. It's not just mine, either - I have a couple of friends who are having a fairly tough time with X5s as well.

As far as warrentys go... Let me just say I got a 2002 with 26k miles fully loaded (except - Cold Weather)with a year left on factory and the cpo runs out in 2008 dec. I paid about what they are asking on your car above. Call your local bmw serice center and ask them whats the best aftermarket warrenty to get for your car.

The market is soft right now. I refused to trade in my g35 because they low balled me so I sold it on ebay and got my reserve. If you want retail on your car sell it in the open market.

I know these cars, I know the service, I know what they are worth and I know the demand. They are a true pleasure to own and drive.

Here's another shot of mine.

I sold these suv's for some time. I always dreamed of having this exact one with the exact features. It even had the gaurdian paint and leather protection plan so it looks new. It also was a also a local central cali car.
They were asking 45K at the dealer. I had done my home work, sold my G and went in with a high credit score and a sizeable down. I bought it at closing time 2 days before christmas.. Go to the dealer armed!

If they gave me atleast 20 for my car, I would do it in a heart beat, but I'll be making sacrafices because it doesn't have all the features I would want, but thank you for the car fax, unfortunately, it's like 5 hours from me. So basically this car is worth 35K, but if CPO it's worth 36-37.....

I looked at it closer:

If I was going to buy this car I would:
1) Pay about 36 K for the car by itself / private party
2) Then I would consider the warrenty aftermarket est 2,500
that's 38,500
3) Since it's a cpo then 38,800 looks good
but - the dealer only pays about 800 bucks for the cpo.
but - Before they can do that they must fix it up like add new tires in order for it to pass. New tires - est 1,000.
SO the dealer is in it for anywhere from 1000-2000.
but they took it off lease for around 30-34k dpending on the deal at a 50% residual off of MSRP.

Now is your chance to deal knowing roughly this..

Start at 36 for the car on paper with the dealer. Pay around 37-38k for the car. If you can do that you got a good deal in MY book...

Hell at the end of the day 38,800 is fair...

Now your trade is another story. Do you know that you can take your car to any dealer regardless if you buy a car or not. The dealers around here that give the most for trades are nissan dealers... Look around. Ask for the USED CAR manager. give the guy a call..

I have asked dealerships around this area, but I believe they assume it's a trade in for one of there vehicles....so they low ball me on my car, as for cold weather package, the weather is probably nice in southern Cali, but here in Topeka KS, it's 15 degrees and with wind chill feels like 3, so a cold weather package is greatly appreciated, especially for my hands, gloves really don't help in this cold.....

Also what do you think about this deal? Also is the MPG better in a 3.0 than the 4.4, meaning is it really a big difference?

FWIW - I am purchasing a 2002 X5 4.4 sport with every option but NAV. It has 42k and never had recall or build issues. Truck is in perfect condition.

$34,500 is the price I am paying. That was a great deal, but I have seen others that are close to that. I hope that helps you out, sometimes waiting and looking can yield the best deal. I looked for 6 months.

My 4.4 averages 14-16 mpg but I drive it hard

My mom's 3.0 gets about 17-18.

As for my NOV 2001 4.4 (YEAR 2002)
25k miles / sport package (clear corners, sport seats, sport wheel, sport suspension) / 19's /new mich's y rated / nav w/ tape / 6 disk / premium sound dsp / lumbar / xenon's
reclining rear seats / dark burl trim / cpo warrenty to 2008 / had the gaurdian protection plan when purchased / cali car / tint... 39 and some change

Am I correct to assume it will be useless in snow and ice weather, no traction and stuff?

Snow Tires.

I don't think it really matters all that much what size the rims are, so long as you have some good snow tires and you take it easy.

We just had snows put on our X3 and that in combination with the HDC and the DSC makes a world of difference! The original rims (with the all season tires on it) were 18's but the snow tire rims only came in 17's. It was expensive but worth it as we go up into the mountains frequently. I'm sure it would be a good thing for you to have in Kansas, too!

Maybe you could check with the dealer when you find the right X5, ask them about throwing in some snow tires/rims. Maybe they will cut you a good deal since you will be buying the car as well. We paid about $2000 for our Dunlop Winter sports.

Good luck! I think it's great you are taking your time and doing your research. I hope you find a great deal!

Yah I can't decide on the 4.4 or the 3.0. I can get a 3.0 pretty cheap and then I could buy the blower from RMS and be jsut as fast as a 4.4 but I kinda want the 4.4 so I don't have to bother with any of the other stuff.

HSRX5, please disregard the above mentioned request, I noticed a couple details on the ad and determined it's probably a scam, my posting in bimmerfest:

OK, this VIN number does not match the vehicle in the pics, so am I safe to say this is a SCAM!!!!!! The pics of the VIN number and odometer is from a Green X5 being sold by the desertautosport on ebay, yet the pics of that vehicle doesn't match picture wise that you have posted.

What do you think about this one? I'm trying to see if he'll take my car + cash:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15282&item=4526775401&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

Based on his autotrader add, he's asking for 48900, is that a reasonable price?

By the way what's a CO2 control?

Here is the email I received from the dude:

Mike,

I am in Us Navy,I am employed as a military doctor.
I am stationed in Prague,Czech with the car, The car is in perfect condition, has all power options and new tires, here are extra pics, it has a clear title in my possesion.
I am obliged to sell it because it was legally to be driven here only 30 days due the fact it has American registration and emission standards.
The shipping will be 3200 dollars and I will use Lufthansa Air Cargo, aprox shipping time is 6 business days, it will come on your local airport and you will pick it up from there.
If interested my attorney will handle the papers work, I will need your full name and address so we can have set up a legal notarized bill of sale, signed over by me and I will need your fax number so I can have it fax to you, like this we will be both protected by law.
About payment I would preffer a fast method,ie wire transfer.
I had in mind a fair method for both of us, half of the amount deposit and I will overnight you the title, and the other half after you have received the car, or we can use a reputable escrow service as Square Trade, which is used by ebay,

Let me know your decision because I have tones of offers and I have to move fast,

Thanks for understanding,
Dr Macmillan

what do you guys think about this one? I'm thinking it's not a 2002, but a 2001, it doesn't have the auto headlamps on the head light switch, am I wrong?
