Well guys, I have some more pix for you, and more still to come. The valves are all adjusted, more pix are being taken tommorow, and then the head goes on right after. Yes, this is behind schedule, however, I can't really complain, the delay has really been my fault (asking for lots of huge pix after they accidentally broke the shop camera from a fall) and they've been great. They could pull some all nighters and finish it tommorow, but I'd rather have it all done up right. Mary Rowe is actually going to set up a little backdrop tommorow for Teddy to take some glamour shots of the head and shortblock. In the meantime, the head is totally assembled, the valves are adjusted...everything's done except putting the head on the shortblock, oil pan on, and other little odds and ends. I haven't been standing idly by waiting for them, however, other elements are coming together. My ST/M5 sway setup (25mm front, 20mm rear, adjustable links and points on the bar) was recently ordered, and I'm ordering up my front upper and lower aluminum control arms with spherical bearings soon. I have yet to act on the rear suspension/mounts/bushings because I'm still deciding whether or not I want to use Gregor Performance Enterprises 'Rock Crusher' setup. Brakes are still TBA, waiting on Brian to have a little chat with Stoptech to see if they'll do a custom setup for my car...if not, I'm doing the either the UUC 14"front/13"rear brake setup, E34 M5 Nurburgring setup, 850CSi/M5 setup, or the 840Ci 4 pot/540i rear setup. I'm also in serious talks as far as wheels go...I think you'll all be very pleased... Anyway, enough teasing, here come the pictures:

Thanks! Glad you like! I actually have more pix coming to me today, and those are shot with a backdrop with studio lighting, real 'glamour' shots of the parts, if you will. The thing is I downsized those pix. The originals were 30XX x 20XX resolution...they were HUGE!!! about 5 megs a pic. The upcoming ones will be as well, and I'll downsize them for public viewing. If you want one in original resolution for a desktop (my monitors have max resolutions of 2048x1536, and I run them both at that, so I have use for such resolutions) that would benefit from it, just give me a shout, I'd be happy to send you an original. More updates to come...

Defacto,

I salute you!!

It's nice to see someone putting all that money to good use...instead of doing something stupid, like buying a ferrari or a house. Just wondering, with a 12:1 CR, was there ever consideration for an o-ringed head gasket?? How about head studs?? What piston rings will you be using and what end gap clearance will you be running?

You know another crazy thing I would do if I had insane money...Ti roller rockers with roller bearings at the shaft and a rollers at the tips?! Just a thought.

I hope I can make it to sharkfest to see this baby.

This will be worthy of a write up in a major car magazine when finished!

I can't wait to see it -

This makes me want to do similar to my M6..

But i've got to get married first and then build a completely enclosed garage.

Then I don't even want to venture a guess at what would happen if you went for a ride...LOL...thanks for the props, and if you're ever in the area, give me a shout, once it's all back together, I'd be more than happy to show you how a properly sorted ///M car all-star stretches its legs...

Looks great. What is the idea behind the steps machined in the valves?
Thanks! Good question...that's called surface turbulence (ST) machining. It's done towards the ends of the intake ports, in addition to the valves. It helps promote fuel atomization, and promotes flow smoothness and velocity. It's like the golf ball principle, how the dimples prevent a vacuum being created behind the moving ball which causes causing drag, instead, the dimples allow the air to meet exactly as it was prior to the ball's arrival. Same idea with the same difficulty in creating the optimal pattern for flow as golf balls (they invest so much research into those dimple patterns on golf balls!), however, Rowe's been doing it for 25 years and has it down to a science...on a turbo car that has one head using ST and then compare it to an identical head, the only difference being that the other head was polished instead of STed, the power numbers at identical boost levels will be significantly higher on the ST motor, fuel consumption is lower, part throttle and low-RPM behavior is much better, and the amount of peak boost that the ST head will be able to safely accomodate will be significantly higher than that of the polished head. It's brilliant stuff, and is one of the big tricks behind getting those power numbers...

Defacto,

I salute you!!

FINALLY!!! THANK GOD SOMEONE ELSE OUT THERE GETS IT!!! WHO THE HELL NEEDS A DAMN FERRARI OR A HOUSE!!! A GARAGE, AN M6 AND A 4 LITER S38 ARE THE SPICES OF LIFE!!! Well, okay, fine, a female in the passenger seat of the M6, but as long as she doesn't nag or roll her eyes when I go to sleep cuddled up against my engine...LOL!

Anyway, an O-ringed head-gasket was not considered because of the rammifications it has on the life of the motor and the damage it does to the head and short block that require you to do additional, extensive mods if something blows or needs inspection. I'm using a metal cutting ring headgasket. Gaskets of that design are good enough to hold 1,000HP supras, skylines, and the 1,200 HP Group 5 M1s...so I think I'm safe. ARP fasteners were used throughout the assembly, studs included. I'm not sure about what type of rings are being used, maybe they're total seal rings? All I know is that Rowe has special ones made. This being because the end gap clearances on all his motors is TIGHT!!! Thanks to the really high silicon content in Wiseco pistons (highest of all customs, more than JEs, and they're owned by the same people!) the ring material, special design features in the piston (Wiseco makes his designs custom for him) and special features machined into the block, the clearance on my motor is .0020. He could've run as low as .0015 or .0010, but he knows that I'm going to be doing alot of hard, high RPM driving, so he gave me that extra bit just to be 100% sure that there was no chance of the piston ever locking or giving me issues.

bumba, once I read 'How to become a millionare in 5 days without killing or maiming anyone unneccesarily FOR DUMMIES' and follow their instructions, and make 5 million dollars in 5 days (miss cleo told me so, mon), then I'll follow your orders and get a Ti roller valvetrain, but I'd also make the cams, cam box, crank hub, flywheel, hardware, 92mm crank, and rods out of Ti while I was at it, shave one or two hundred pounds off the engine and have such a lightweight rotating assembly that only a sequential gearbox out of an F1 car would be able to shift gears quickly enough without mis-matched revs...

This is going to be the sickest ///M6, its not going to stop under the hood is it?
You know it's only beginning under the hood better than anyone, but I wouldn't want to announce the beginning of construction for a new building to the press until I had broken ground...you know what I mean? I'll count my chickens right after they've hatched, so that everyone can see what's actually happening, not what 'might' happen, but I wouldn't so cruel to you guys as to count my chickens once they're all grown up and laying eggs of their own.

Gosh I'm feeling metaphorical this morning...LOL!

By the way, the head and the shortblock have now become united, all that remains is to have the timing chain, oil pump, water pump, spark plugs, etc, etc, put on. That should be done early tommorow. Then they're building a crate for it, so it can begin it's journey home on monday! Wish me (and them) luck, I really wanna see my engine!

All you need to do to redeem your wild ride is bring two sets of underwear, one when you see the car, two when you get your ride. I will be carding, no exceptions! I will also require you to bring either a 12-pack of sam adams or the equivalent (no wimpy light colored watery stuff tolerated) to be consumed by me and you after the ride while telling wild ///M6 ownership stories...Cohiba, Monte Cristo or equivalent cigars are acceptable substitute. Upon showing proof of all of the above, you will be admitted to one hell of a ride...

You should join ScottJ and myself on the mag cover. I decided that Scott's and my car deserve to be on the cover of something...hehe. European Car or Euro Tuner would work, hell, maybe we can remind all of the Bangle Brainwashed reading Roundel what real BMWs look like, and shake them from that horrible trance they fell ill to....

I'm not married...maybe that's why I'm able to build it up...LOL

Wanna buy it? It's got quite the history...two inches thick from new...owned by the chief driving instructor of the NY BMWCCA for almost its' entire life...tons of mods, tons of free stuff included with it. By far the most fun to drive M5 i've ever gotten behind the wheel of, it's extremely well sorted. Motor pulls like a freight train, and stops on a dime. Full body repaint really recently, done to an awesome standard...I'll sell it for a very appealing price...

Hell, if you come after it's installed, i'll even throw in a drive in the M6! That's right, you get a drive in the M6 if you buy my M5! You will, however, be limited to how hard you can drive it, since it will have almost no miles on it, still in the critical time period of break-in. Even on break-in fun pedal usage, it'll still be a thriller :D The drive alone is worth the M5's price of admission...:D

And yes, I should talk to Rob about photographing and doing a feature on Scott's and my car. Scott bought his motor off rob anyhow...so he owes him one! We're going to save the BMW faithful yet!

So how much for the M5?? I'll throw in a couple of 6 packs of the "fat lady" beer, as I call it (Paulanar - Oktoberfest Marzen, damn good beer).

Seriously, I can't (shouldn't) get another car right now, but in a few months down the road, if you're still selling, I might come knockin' on your door.

Are those 17x9 BBS RXs on there? What sway bar/spring/shock combo do you have on it?

I'm really in no rush to sell, so if you have the money for a well sorted car a little ways down the line, then just gimme a shout. Those are staggered 17x8/17x9 BBS RXes with 225/45/17 and 255/45/17 rubber.

It has a Dinan Stage III suspension, and a custom made front lower tie bar. It has upgraded 750 brakes...ah jeez, I can't even begin to list all the stuff on this car. Like you may have seen me post elsewhere, this car was owned by the chief driving instructor of the NY BMWCCA for almost all its life, so it's been taken very good care of, and I have a 2 inch thick stack of records since new to prove it. When I'm out of my morning grogginess, I'll give a more formal list of what the car has...'cause it's got alot...
