I purchases a 3.0 2001 X5 with 45K miles with navigation couple of weeks ago. Car looks and feels great.

I have another week or so to decide if I want to purchase a 48 month/48K miles extended warranty from Infinit Dealer for $1,615.00. This waranty has a $50 dollar deductable and covers all mechanical breakdowns. But, has a list of exclusions that includes Navigation and Radio. Pls. see:

Can anyone who owns an X5 tell me if I should expect enough machanical problems that warrants purchasing an extended warranty?

If you really would like to get an extended warrant & the factory warranty is still good I would go to a BMW dealer & purchase one from there..I would include maintanance also..I see your'e in DC like me and Tisher BMW in silver spring always comes through for me...BMW of arlington has tooo long of a wait for appointments

Mechnanical problems are the least of your worries with a newer BMW. If you really want a warranty for peace of mind, I'd look for a warranty that is more comprehensive than just mechanical--it should include the bulk of electrical and fuel systems, too. Although it's not an exact science, those are the things (especially the electrical accessories) that are most prone to failure on a newer BMW.

The previous post gives good advice to see what kind of deal you can get from a BMW dealer, but be ready to pay more for it there since it covers more stuff...

Bumper to Bumper extended warranties are too expensive (~ 3K) and less expensive warranties do not cover electrical accessories.
I think I will skip the warranty and put the money aside if my car brakes down.

Thank you all for your advise.

All aftermarket warrenty's will exclude Nav and radio ect.

There is no such thing as a BMW extended warrenty. Just a CPO.
Some Dealers will actually let you CPO your car through service.
(It helps to know someone)
A warrenty from a BMW dealer thats similar will run 2500 to 3500 on a good day.
I worked for a Nissan Dealer and a BMW dealer. Nissan will take care of you but not as well as a CPO. or a BMW warrenty from a dealer.
Go to a BMW dealer and ask for Finance. Talk to the person and get a quote.
