Hey guys,

A two weeks ago, I ordered a driveshaft for my car. The sales guy told me the shaft would come with serviceable u-joints. I thought this meant that the u-joints would be held in place by snap rings. When I went to pick up the shaft that was not the case. So i did not buy it.

Today I spoke to a sales rep from Bavarian Auto.com. Hey assured me that their shafts do come with snap rings. Does anyone know if this is true?? I just don't trust sales people in general, if you know what I mean, especially after dealing with the previous sales guy.

Bavauto sells their shaft for ~$420 inlcuding refund for your core. Does anyone know of a better deal on a drive shaft with snap rings??

Thanks.

I found a local shop to do mine. price was $350 with new joints, support bearing, and balancing.

What is the fascination with snap rings? These units last ~150K miles. If you DIY the joints down the raod (no pun intended), will you get the assembly balanced?

Your lowest cost solution may be to take the original driveshaft to a driveline specialty shop in your area, likely the same place used by the local dealers and shops for performance import vehicles.

I found a great place for rebuilt drive shafts...

http://www.beyerdriveline.com/products.html

The reason for looking for a drive shaft with snap rings is that you can replace the u-joints your self for a much lower price ($80) as compared to buying a whole new drive shaft.

As far as rebeuilding your own...I think that's OK too. I tried to find a shop that would do it in Houston...maybe I didn't look hard enough, but none of the driveline speacialty places wanted to touch my BMW shaft.

Beyer only sells to shops, but I have a friend with a shop that was able to buy one for me. Beyer is also a sponser of the upcoming 5er fest. It looks like a really great product. I ordered it this past Friday, I hope to get it by thursday...can't wait to see this baby...can't wait to have have my car running!!
