View Full Version : i got a new lens! weeeeee!
woobiee 01-05-2005, 06:13 PM i love this little thing. its a Nikkor 50mm fixed f1.4 D AF. the depth of field is outrageous with a f1.4...it isolates any object easily and since its a 1.4 it can suck in more light so less blurry pics for me :)
the lens (photo taken with crappy quantaray 28-90mm lens). its a bit blurry cuz its like a f4.8 at 35mm I got a free lens hood

What kind of camera do you have? I love Nikons! :buttrock
I've had a N90 before and now have a Coolpix 5700. I want one of those D70s!

Nice lens...Nice camera...Nice Omega...
Nice everything :woot:
dcardenas 01-05-2005, 09:47 PM That SeaMaster needs to be refinished. ;)
Blade929 01-05-2005, 09:55 PM That's a nice lens but I find that shooting with a fixed 50 tends to be a pain in the ass. I just got a new lens before Christmas Nikkor 70-200 2.8g ed-if. It's very nice but a bit cumbersome if you are trying to maintain a low profile.
Niiiice. i was so set on the D70 for a while, but ive settled on a point and shoot.... the Coolpix 8800. hopefully i get results that are half as impressive as yours!
oh and chris... youve been using this :woot: a lot lately. just noticing.
Woobie-
How is the speed of that D70 in terms of firing off shots on a moving object? Is it a lot like a film 35mm? I've heard that a lot of these Digital SLRs are like a 35mm in that respect, just wanted to see what you thought of it with your D70.
How are low light conditions-I mean like really low light?
My one beef with Nikon is the bad white balance factory setting. But otherwise, they make great cameras!
Preppy 01-05-2005, 10:14 PM is it me, or is Woobiee a REAL baller.....gawdamn, he has nice:
1.CAR

5.watch
Bastard....:stickoutt
Phat Ham 01-05-2005, 10:43 PM i love this little thing. its a Nikkor 50mm fixed f1.4 D AF. Back in school I used the same exact lens along with a 20mm f2.8 manual, an 80-200 f2.8 AFS and a 300 f2.8. I don't think I ever opened it all the way up to 1.4, but it was always nice knowing it was there. The only thing I don't like about the 50 is that it felt so cheap and fragile compared to the other lenses and the F4 bodies I used.
adolenc 01-06-2005, 12:54 AM That's a nice lens but I find that shooting with a fixed 50 tends to be a pain in the ass. I just got a new lens before Christmas Nikkor 70-200 2.8g ed-if. It's very nice but a bit cumbersome if you are trying to maintain a low profile.
I agree with this. I have the manual focus version of the same lens (gotta love Nikon with how you can take the latest digital SLR camera and still use all your old legacy lenses), and while it does have some good uses, it's among the least used lenses in my pile. 28mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.8 are the two lenses I used the most. Though honestly I haven't done much photography in the last several years.
The 70-200 2.8 is a fantastic lens, supposed to be one of Nikon's sharpest ones. Had a chance to use one a while ago, very sweet. Definitely big though.
Kyle K. 01-06-2005, 12:59 AM Dude, NICE. I've got the 50mm f1.8 for my D70 and I wish I could have sprung for the 1.4 when I got it. 1.8 is nuts with the DOF, I can imagine 1.4 is just icing on the cake. What other lenses do you have for the cam? I've got the kit lens (which I'm thinking of replacing with the 24-120G VR but I don't know if I'll miss the 18mm vs. 24mm :az ), and a 70-300G (very capable lens for the price).
Its nice to know there are some other Nikon lovers here. :cool
Phat Ham 01-06-2005, 01:06 AM gotta love Nikon with how you can take the latest digital SLR camera and still use all your old legacy lenses that's not completely true. The old 20mm f2.8 MF and another 300mm f2.8 MF I used weren't recognized by a D100. you could still take pictures, but as far as the D100 was concerned the lens wasn't even there. The biggest problem this caused was not having a meter, but since the D100 is a digital you can just look at the pictures right after you take them and correct as needed.
Kevlar 01-06-2005, 01:08 AM I can't use those pictures on the webpage... go out and photograph some car parts :D
Kyle K. 01-06-2005, 01:08 AM The D100/D70 are more of the "consumer" line of DSLRs, and are not compatible with older MF lenses, but I believe the D1H/X and D2H/X are both compatible with all Nikon's AF and MF lenses.
GUINNESS 01-06-2005, 09:54 AM How difficult is it to learn the D70 if you've never used an SLR? What lenses would you recommend to start with (plan on taking car pics, scenery pics, at the track pics)?
If we have any upcoming meets or photoshoots, think I can check it out?
adolenc 01-06-2005, 10:40 AM that's not completely true. I wasn't 100% sure on that one, figured y'all would correct me as appropriate.
I also still stand by my observation that digital hasn't caught film in terms of resolution. One 8x10 enlargement I made caught individual raindrops in the scene. Thought the shop had screwed up the enlargement, then I realized it was raining that day.
clyde325xiT 01-06-2005, 11:08 AM Dude, NICE. I've got the 50mm f1.8 for my D70 and I wish I could have sprung for the 1.4 when I got it.
I like the 1.8 better than the 1.4. The 1.8 resolves a little sharper (not that it matters since they both will go above nyquist on the given Nikon DSLR image sensors), but more importantly, the 1.8's bokeh is more pleasing (IMO, anyway) at big f-stops.
I haven't had any issues with a handful of old Nikkor AIS lenses on my D100, but there are some that are supposed to be problematic. A number of people have also had issues with some third party lenses (both MF and AF).
Someone asked about autofocus performance on the D70? The Nikon D70 and D100 use the old CAM900 autofocus module which is old and not very robust. How good it appears to someone will depend on what they are used to and their expectations. It's a truly massive improvement over any p&s you may have used, but it kind of sucks compared to the CAM1300 and CAM2000 modules used in the higher end Nikon DSLRs (D1/D2 lines and expected to be in the soon to be announced D100 replacement). The CAM900's tracking is good enough for reasonably predicatable subjects (think cars on a track or autox course), but it will throw you for some loops from time to time.
Burst modes in the D70 and D100 aren't great, both being about 3fps and the buffer sizes in both are pretty small (3-4 NEFs before it has to write everything out...more than that when shooting jpegs, but still not a lot).
Nikon just dropped the price on the D2H a couple weeks ago to just under $2k, making it THE value leader in price/performance among all DSLRs. The D70 is a lot less expensive, but a lot less capable. The image sensor in the D2H, although smaller than the D70's, is much better if shooting <ISO1000, it has the CAM1300 AF module (faster, more accurate, more sensors and good tracking), higher frame rate, bigger buffer, better construction materials, integrated vertical shutter release and command dials, blah, blah, blah.
A D100 replacement is expected to be announced next month, but who knows when it will be available. I'm waiting for that before deciding what to replace my D100 with.

I can't speak for woobiee, but my D100's noise reduction software works very, very well for long exposures. The camera will disable NR if battery power is low, so make sure you have a fresh set of batteries in the camera before you start taking night photographs. I took some night exposures last week and was surprised by the hot pixels until I realized that the images were saved to the memory card without NR processing.
As for the WB settings, the D100 and D70 both allow you to set a custom WB by shooting a white card. The Auto WB setting stinks in incandescent light.
How difficult is it to learn the D70 if you've never used an SLR? What lenses would you recommend to start with (plan on taking car pics, scenery pics, at the track pics)?
For static car and scenery pictures, I'd recommend a wide to medium telephoto zoom lens (24-70mm or similar). If you're shooting cars at the track, I'd recommend a 70-300mm zoom like the one Kyle has. He posted some really good track photos a few weeks ago.
woobiee 01-06-2005, 01:01 PM Jed - speed of the camera is instant! just like any 35mm SLR. Theres absolutly no lag when turning the camera on. Basically..when the camera is 'on' its not really on until you start to meter, use the flash or take a shot. Once the battery lasted for a month straight. The battery is mainly for the LCD screen on the back.
I dunno but the white balance is superb. Each preset setting has customized -2/+2 levels. Plus you get the Custom white balance; you can set it to a gray card.
Preppy - i think im an e-baller? mhahahah
adolenc - i agree the 70-200 ed is a good lens hence its popularity.
Kyle K. - I have a 70-300mm ED and a poopy quantaray 28-90mm being replaced by the 24-120 VR like what you want too. The kit lens is very very good.
Kevlar - yes master i shall.
GUINNESS - its a great starter dSLR. Def get the kit version which comes with a lens, a good one at that. You can check it out anytime.
G. P. Burdell - i used to use the NR feature on the camera but since the D70 controls noise soo well..even at high ISOs, and that NR lags the camera considerably, i turned it off.
adolenc 01-06-2005, 01:37 PM Here's a question for y'all with Nikon DSLR's. Do any of them have the high-eyepoint viewfinder? My F801s has it, and frankly, it rocks.
G. P. Burdell 01-06-2005, 01:50 PM According to Nikon's product specs, the eyepoint of the D100 is 20mm. The viewfinder seems cramped compared to that of an F100.
Phat Ham 01-06-2005, 02:39 PM The viewfinder seems cramped compared to that of an F100. That's cuz the D100 is based on the N80 body, not the F100. Don't know if that's what you were getting at, but it's a common misconception.
Phat Ham 01-06-2005, 02:47 PM Jed - speed of the camera is instant! just like any 35mm SLR. not all SLRs are created equal. The D100 I used had noticeable shutter lag compared to the F4 I was used to. Not that the D100 is bad; the F4 is magnificent. The slow burst rate of the D100 was also kind of annoying. I'm assuming here that the D70 isn't any faster than the D100. I felt the same way about an n90s too. If this is going to be your first SLR though, you won't notice the shutter lag.

Nah, that's not what I was getting at. I know the D100 is N80-based. I used the F100 as a frame of reference because I used one frequently in college, and I'm familiar with its ergonomics.
:cool

i experience no shutter lag at all.
but when you talk about frame rates, the buffer isnt so nice. i think it was like 3fps until a set number then it drops down.
I still have some Nikon lenses that I used on my old 35mm SLR. That would be awesome to be able to use them on a digital 35mm. I like my 5700 pseudo SLR-it's kinda a cross between an SLR and a point and shoot, but I would love an actual SLR again and have a choices of lenses and hell even having the use of simple filters like a polarizer.
I know nothing about the digi SLRs, can you actually lock the shutter like a 35mm on the D70?
woobiee 01-06-2005, 07:27 PM when you mean lock do you mean holding the shutter open till whenever? the D70 has the 'bulb' feature that opens the shutter as long as you like. it also has a IR remote where you can push the remote button...leave and push the button again when you like to finish the exposure.
the D70 also has a mirror lock up...if you ever needed to clean the insides.

Yes that's what I mean. The ability to hold the shutter as long as you want.
Thanks for the info!
Phat Ham 01-06-2005, 07:45 PM i experience no shutter lag at all. The shutter lag won't really be noticeable unless you're used to something that has absolutely none, such as an F4, which is what I used for a couple years before I got my hands on a D100.
G. P. Burdell 01-06-2005, 10:16 PM I've figured out why I was having noise/hot pixel problems in the night exposures I mentioned previously.
What Nikon doesn't mention in the manual is that, when battery power is low and noise reduction is on, the camera will not apply NR to the image; instead, it will just save the unprocessed image to the memory card. While I was shooting the night photos, I saw the battery icon flashing, but I didn't think anything of it. I put some fresh batteries in the camera tonight and shot a "dark frame" with the lens cap on and NR activated. The resulting frame is nearly devoid of hot pixels.
In short, I was blaming the camera when I should have blamed my own laziness for not changing out the batteries. :)
I'll change my comments on NR in my previous post so I don't give anyone the impression that the D100's NR is bad.
GreekM3 01-06-2005, 10:44 PM what is this noise u speak of? I have a sony p-100 and it has a "noise" meter but i have no clue what it does
woobiee 01-06-2005, 11:06 PM example of noise (fake noise btw, i did this in photoshop...but real camera noise is from the camera)
F1.8 POWER :buttrock
lol, in relation to my 4" leatherman (which you all should have/go buy since its saved+helped me countless times on car work)

GreekM3 01-06-2005, 11:17 PM i have come to the conclusion that no noise is better. how can i decrease this noise?
btw woobie, nice watch :stickoutt
how do you get your pictures so clear? Mine come out yellow. Do you whitebalance it before each set of pics?

woobiee 01-06-2005, 11:40 PM good taste in watches zeke heh...hey is that the quartz version? or midsize?
yes i usually white balance before a series of photos.
i JUST took this pic...i thought its cool lookin. I LOVE THIS LENS!

good taste in watches zeke heh...hey is that the quartz version? or midsize?

Its quartz. Out of all the watches ive owned/own i like this one the best. (James bond style). I just think overall its a great looking watch and holds time well.
Im liking your pics.
GreekM3 01-06-2005, 11:53 PM i have come to the conclusion that no noise is better. how can i decrease this noise? .
woobiee 01-06-2005, 11:58 PM .
use low ISO settings. umm maybe using wide apetures. take pics in well lit areas. most consumer cams are really bad at controlling noise in low lit conditions.
GreekM3 01-07-2005, 12:04 AM i got da sony p-100 jammy.....do a search on dat BiAtCh.....there gots 2 b some adjustment on it, its hot
adolenc 01-07-2005, 11:21 AM the D70 also has a mirror lock up...if you ever needed to clean the insides.
That's one use of the mirror lockup, but the real purpose of that is to lock the mirror up before you snap the picture, reduce any vibrations when the picture is taken. Cool that it has it though.
Either the D70 or D100 have a Depth of Field preview button? A button that you press that closes the lens down to the aperture desired? That way you can see what the picture will look like at F1.8 vs F16.
G. P. Burdell 01-07-2005, 11:26 AM The D100 and D70 both have the DOF preview button. It's electronic, not mechanical.
As for the mirror lockup: I think the D70 and D100 offer it primarily for CCD cleaning purposes. To reduce the effects of mirror slap, there is a custom function you can activate that will flip the mirror up a fraction of a second before the shutter opens. I use it frequently for long exposures.

its probably harder to type like that than it is to type normal :smile
