I just moved to the Reston/Herndon area in northern VA and am looking for a good mechanic nearby. Or...although I dread going to the stealer, does anyone have experience from them around here?

When it comes to dealers, I've only had experience with BMW of Sterling. I wouldn't say the service is excellent, but it isn't bad either. The nice thing is that they provide loaners, but it can take upwards of three weeks to get an appointment. Also, the service advisors don't appear to stick around very long.

For an independent, you can try Curry's in Chantilly or Ashburn. Unfortunately, they are just as expensive as a dealer. Labor rates in the area are around $95 per hour and I have yet to find someone with a lower rate.

Curry's didnt treat me so nice throughout my experience there. wouldnt return.

FYI, I think Gary raised his rates to $85/hr.

I don't think I ever came across a dealer that wasn't less than $100/hr and it doesn't shock me to hear rates as high as $130 (example, $630 parts and labor to replace an X5 driver side window regulator :rolleyes part cost me around 85 and it took 2 hrs tops. I'm still trying to figure out the math).

Thanks...yeah I checked the parked info but only saw stuff for Maryland, or not very close to Reston. $80-85 an hour isn't too bad, I think my mechanic in PA was $75. I just hate dealing with service managers at the dealers that are always trying to sell you extra crap.

I started going there in 1996 and I have ALWAYS had good service and good prices. They actually care about making the customer happy. I just moved from Reston to Miami and I dread having to find another place.
