View Full Version : DC-area weather and the e36

How does everyone feel about driving his e36 in this area in the winter? At some point I think I'm going to get a 323is (either a 1999 or a 2000 - yes I know that's an e46). Do you feel like you want a winter car? I've got plenty of time to toy with this, as I'm going to stick with my current fleet for at least this winter and next summer, but I keep going back and forth about whether I need a winter car.

My main concern is driving to go skiing. Those mountain roads are generally kept pretty clear, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in Bumf*ck, WV overnight if I were caught in a storm. Those roads can be very scary at night if they are even slightly slippery.

It's all tires IMO. You can purchase goblue's JGC .. but, you still need to put on winter tires IMO for going into the mountains. That's why people around here with rwd cars but snow tires, pass SUV's lying in a ditch.

I got snows on both cars and no snow anytime soon! :(

Good all-seasons will get you through most anything this area can throw at you. Snows are great, but you don't need them by any means.

If you're planning on doing some serious driving in the hills of WV for skiing, I would get snows, however. The only thing a Jeep will do better in the snow is accelerate. The BMW will be better at stopping and turning.

That's how I feel when I drive my mother's explorer in bad weather. I'd rather know what the car was doing rather than having some mystical 4wd.

Appreciate the offer for JGC, but I was thinking more along the lines of subaru if I decide to get a winter vehicle.

At this point I'm convincing myself I don't need a winter car so I can justify buying myself a miata as a fair-weather friend. I refuse to own three cars as an unmarried 23-year-old. :D

We should get together for a SNOW meet and slide around a parking lot. That is, if it ever snows here.

A BMW with good tires will get you through any snow that's no more than an inch or two deeper than its ground clearance. My 325xiT was good in up to 9 or so inches of powder. (I got stuck on all seasons in 11", though.)

As a corollary, anyone going off into the mountains ought to have a set of snow chains in the trunk for emergencies. Those'll save your butt in deep snow.

If my mom can get around in Michigan in her Z4, you can manage ALL the snow we have here...oh wait, nevermind.

So yes snow tires are the key!

I actually had no problem driving around on my 325is in the snow on Michelin Pilot Sports. I've even driven it in thicker stuff to the point where it came up to the doorsill. It's a pretty capable car, but as with anything, if you drive it like an azz or just plain can't drive snow...

Some people like to claim that they absolutely cannot drive their E36 in the snow or like to say how it sucks. BS. That just means they don't know how to drive in the snow.

Jed, you've seen me drive. The last thing anyone on the road wants me to do is overestimate my driving skill. :)

That sounds like a good idea. How about some chains in the rear for traction?

Or these (http://www.mattracks.com/html/litefoot_atv.htm)??

When mine was stock, it went through 4.5 inches of snow just fine with 15inch allseason MXV4s. I did get high centered in a bit more but they work great and the traction control does work to keep you from loosing too much traction.

One thing that sucks is that if you are stuck, the traction control will cut power almost to the the point that the motor stalls. Just switch it off and spin the tires a bit and you will get going.

Doesn't David have an M3 though? rich! :rolleyes 17" tires vs. 15" tires in snow -- will make a tremendous difference. So, it's not a fair comparison. Smaller tire all-seasons will always work better than larger tire all-seasons in snow, at least.

My brother lives in colorado springs, commutes through the snow pretty often, and has an '02 Miata as his daily driver. It has snows, he says it goes through anything.

I suspect the Elise they're getting won't see snow though

I think you are confusing me with someone else... the value of my two cars together is approximately one-third of the shittiest e36 m3.

If I get a miata it will have no top or A/C (guess that's not too important in the snow) and be very lightweight. I don't see that as much of a winter car.

Are you friend's with Andy then?? :stickoutt

Don't worry, you are RICH by association. That's all of us here anyway. I know Jed, Jed know's people with RICH cars. Plus, you are forgetting this region's mantra: "We have BMW's, therefore, we are rich!" Sorry Mikey! :stickoutt

For example, I know soloII, soloII has a brother that's getting a Lotus Elise!! SUPER RICH!!!!

Now, by virtue of association, I can add that to my list of cars. :)

Cool! I didn't know about that rule! That means I can add the C5 and the M5 I drove this weekend. And the forklift!

(I have to repeat myself since no one read my other thread on this topic... :))

The fleet size will increase as I get older - whether or not I get married. Right now I don't even have a driveway! :(

Dunno about that Jeddy.... that sounds dangerous to me. You should have AT LEAST All-Seasons if you plan on driivng in the snow....

Buying a second set of wheels/winter tires is much cheaper than buying a second car ;)

But since AlfaEric and Jkuper bought winter tires.. they have somehow produced a global warming effect.... wasting my $ spent on a snowblower :mad
