Ahh ... that's true, you have the winch ... :fingerboi :stickoutt

I believe Pete said Eric would like to go and so would Jed. Pete said Eric is an excellent spotter. I have everything else we would need. I think the only thing I am lacking is adding a good CB antenna. I need one that I can bend and have it go the length of the entire car. The other 4' foot one kept smacking the top of the underground parking garage. I need to stop by radio shack then ...

We just need to convince Pete to add a few skid guards and a 2" BB w/31's.

Then, we can get Eric to put an 11" lift on the 318 with skid plates covering the oil pan :stickoutt .. and he should be ready to go.

Although, your car is TOO nice to take off-roading.

Hilarious!

I sometimes get an urge to take my dad's Frontier offroad... but then I realize that running off the road into the median doesn't count as offroading.

Anyone know where I can get skid pans (Transmission/transfer case and fuel tank) for a 94 ZJ? I guess I also need front pull points.

I wanna go wheel'n. Maybe I'll just go buy the TJ unlimited. :devillook

Don't tempt me. Remember what happened when everyone kept talking about slammin cars to the point you can't drive them... :embarrasm

E30 lift kit? :devillook

I'll weld some plates to the bottom of the truck. Course changing the oil after that may take some thought. :dunno

I think he would have a better time going to a junkyard. There's one in md that specializes in jeeps. All he needs to do is scour them for awhile and he should probably be able to buy everything for 75% off new ones.

So Bren, does this mean you'll be coming as well. Bf.c off-road team?

Where do you guys go offroading around here? I tried to find places to go a year or so ago -- went with a buddy to a place in gaithersburg that he knew of.... turned out to be a state park  :nono

I'd be up for some offroading if you could tolerate a nEwB with a basically stock TJ.

The only place left is Paragon, rousch creek and big dogs. It's expensive since they are private offroad parks.

There are some smaller areas in MD but I'm not sure how good the trials are and if we have to register our trucks as OHV (permit). The last place I went was George Washington Park but all of their trails are now closed.

When do you guys want to go? Does anyone have a winch? I would need some time to get my jeep into shape.

James you just bought a winch, right?

NoSoup4U

No, not yet. I've been toying with the idea. We need Todd to come with us, he has the winch; but, I think we could pretty much get out of anything. I have the hi-lift jack, and from what Pete says, that will be sufficient to get us out of any trouble. I have 20,000/30,000/40,000 lb straps. Plus, I have the ARB air compressor so we can fill our tires up quickly again.

I've been thinking of upgrading my alternator and doing little baby steps before dropping the $$$ on the winch. There's a guy in md that sells a 136A alternator for $85.00 shipped. My alternator is 90A. The 165A alternator from alterstart costs $149 plus shipping. So, the 136A looks attractive. Not sure if I would need to get a deep cycle battery though.

I'm trying to avoid modding two cars ... one is enough.

I have a 9000 lb winch on my WJ :buttrock From reading on novajeepers.com they refer to a local place called George Washing National Forest, I have no clue where it is but it sounds fairly close.

Are your jeeps all 'souped up' for off roading? Mine's got all of the good factory stuff (30" tires, posi, dana 44, 3.73's) but no lift or anything.. Will I be able to hang with you guys?

Trust me that's plenty of Jeep, my truck is a trail rig, nothing too crazy for me!

It's the same. I was doing a little checking and there are some trails that are still open in GW but they are kind of weak. Any 2wd could make it. GW is in the area where VA, WVA and MD meet. Very western most part of VA and MD.

There are some other trails in Garret Co that seem ok especially for novices (more than a scenic drive).

Justin,

My Jeep is bone stock and in fact is missing any pull points or skid pans. I would not attempt to wheel with any truck that didn't have those basics. As far as your jeep is concerned, all you need is that stuff and you'll be able to handle a lot of the minor to moderate trails in area. You might want to consider some rocker protection if you plan on keeping stock ride height though as you may bang up the rockers on stuff. As with anything tires are most important. Street type radials are a bad idea as they will get you stuck pretty quick. At minimum All terrains are a good start and you may want to consider muds if you get more serious.

There are a couple of things everyone should remember and their pretty easy.

Slow as possible, as fast as necessary.
Tread lightly
Put you tire over the tallest part of the obstacle.
Maintain your momentum.
Stop before you attempt an obstacle and check it out. Whether it's a hill or mud hole, you want to see what is on the other side of the hill or how deep a hole is.
Plan your line.
When descending hills, put your truck in 4-low and steer your truck down the hill. DO NOT USE THE BRAKES. Brakes will only cause you to slide down the hill. It's quite a bit more tricky for automatic guys on hill descents.

There are quite a few I'm missing but those are the basics.

I thought about a junk yard search but from what I hear those parts are hard to come by.

I might be up for some wheeling. Nothing too extreme though, I'm pretty much done with removing off-road "pin striping" ;)

1st thing you need before every considering driving offroad are pull points FRONT and REAR and your own tow strap. and the tow strap must have loops, not those cheapo hooks. go to your local autoparts store and buy tow hooks and bolt them to your frame rails.

if you are thinking about building a truck, first thing you should buy is a rear locker. that will get your further than a lift, tires, winch, whatever you can bolt on. follow that with a front locker and you will cruise past most trucks. your street manners will go downhill but thats the nature of the beast.
THEN get some armor for your truck. rock sliders and bumpers.
FINALLY put on a lift and some aggressive rubber

as for places to wheel around here, there's a private place down in Crozet, VA that's really cool. you have to call first and arrange it.

GWNF has some easy stuff, but is fairly scenic

Paragon is a park that has some tough stuff

Uwharrie down near Highpoint, NC is also fairly challenging

Tellico will smack down even an extremely modified truck, but is a long drive from DC
