View Full Version : NEED TO BORROW: Spring Compressor
bimmerdream 01-03-2005, 06:16 PM Hey die hards,
I'm making a call to all of those who have spring compressors lying around. I just got my lowering springs and I need to install those babies asap! Please, let me have your spring compressssors for one evening... Thanks!!!
M.
nick325xit 5spd 01-03-2005, 07:09 PM do you have OEM shocks?
if you're putting springs on the OEM POS shocks, you're extremely foolish. Especially given how old they are by now.
simsima325 01-03-2005, 07:49 PM yea maybe hold off til u get new shocks.
but u can go to any autozone and put down a $50 deposit on them, get it all back when u return the spring compressor.
woobiee 01-03-2005, 08:38 PM or pep boys :)
Preppy 01-04-2005, 03:01 AM where in his post does it say that he's using stock shocks or are we ASSuME(ing) that since he only mentioned springs that he didnt get shocks...
magnetic1 01-04-2005, 09:20 AM they cost like $40 at Sears too
bimmerdream 01-04-2005, 10:38 AM Yeah, ok, I knew you m.f.s would jump all over it... ;)
No I don't have new struts/shocks, right now I'm just going to do the springs. And no, the car will NOT fall apart if you install lowering springs on stock shocks. May be my lap times will not be as good at the next autocross, but then again, I don't do autocross. So, there, want some ketchup with that?

No, but you'll get better performance from installing new shocks on stock springs than you will by installing new springs on stock (and worn out) shocks.
So I'm guessing this mod isn't being done for performance.

Not to mention the springs arent matched to the shocks you have now... your car will "pogo" when you hit bumps and stuff.... <not cool>
nick325xit 5spd 01-04-2005, 03:05 PM A car with insufficient damping can be pretty scary to drive.
There's also a chance that you'll break somethign expensive.
bimmerdream 01-04-2005, 03:28 PM Please define "pogo"?
magnetic1 01-04-2005, 03:33 PM Please define "pogo"?
In a car w/ matched shocks/springs, lets say you hit a bump. The car will bounce once and return to its orginal location.
If you have mismatched shocks, it will bounce, not return to original position and bounce again and again and again..... kinda like when you have blown shocks, but with a higher frequency... blown shocks kind of have a slow bouncing, while pogo-effect is faster.....
Am I correct Solo2M and Nick?
nick325xit 5spd 01-04-2005, 03:37 PM Yep. A well damped car goes up and down. Your car with stiff springs and stock shocks will go WAY up, WAY down, up, down, up, down, up, down. It'll suck.
Just think of Tigger, sing the song to yourself, and imagine how much that would suck applied to a car.

Although, I was thinking. If he has blown shocks and tries to do this... it might actually absorb the extra harmonic up/down motion? or is it the other way around? Im a little slow today from waking up at 6AM... but hey, I get to leave work in less than an hour! :redspot :alright
nick325xit 5spd 01-04-2005, 03:43 PM Blown shocks have a slow return, but they have no resistance to movement. The more the shocks wear, the less they'd stop the bouncing motion. And with springs, the already WELL worn shocks would likely become blown or very close to it in due course.
bimmerdream 01-04-2005, 03:44 PM Well, I had this ghetto set up on my 3000gt, and it wasn't too bad at all. Granted it was bouncy a bit, but nothing to the efect you guys describe... But, I'll let you know how I feel about the set up once I get it done. so, I guess I have to go to autozone or advanced auto parts to get/rent the comressors?
clintjg 01-04-2005, 04:19 PM This very fact contributed to the totaling of my GTI VR6 a few years back.
I rounded a corner to hot, hit a bump and the rear end came right out from under me. I slammed into a wall backwards at about 80mph totaling the car. I had stock shocks and progress springs. The car looked awsome. Parked. Just some feedback from someone that wouldn't advise it man....

Now you guys are scarying me.....

That's the whole point. Blown/badly mismatched shocks ARE scary.
Your tires will wear prematurely too.
clintjg 01-04-2005, 11:38 PM I'm all about moddin' the car man but seriously, save another month or two and cough up some dough for some Koni or BS shocks. Measure the unloaded spring height and call someone smart on the subject.
Tell them you have xxx lb springs that are xxx in tall un-sprung and ask them what would work best.
Once you have the shocks your more than welcome to borrow my compressors. :D
