Looking to get a 4 door, since they don't make an E46 M3 4 door, I'm probably not going to get another bmw.

You always have the option of a 4 door E39 M5? That will get you family from point A to point B in no time! :D

Well, I don't want to dump a load of cash into a car, then have to dump even more into it to make it work. The E39 M5's will never be a good auto-x car, they're just too big and heavy, same thing at the track...

The two contenders seem to be either an '05 STI or a '01-'02 S4 Avant.

Would be my choice if I were in your shoes. Or possibly an EVO since I like them far more than STi's.

Haven't had the chance to drive an Evo yet. I like the recaro seats, but the rest of the interior is pretty cheesy. Also, they've bundled the sunroof with a whole bunch of other stuff to make it a $3000 option package. That makes the Evo more $$ than the STI and the STI is a much nicer ride for everyday driving...

Please don't get a STI or EVO, I went and test drove an 01 S4 auto the other night and thought it was a very nice ride! The ride feels very nice with great response. The interior is excellent great, very nice seats and easy to read guages. As for the auto, I liked it, it still has the triptronic or whatever audi calls it but it has good response also. It was a sedan but like you I would much rather prefer the avant.

What kind of stuff have they bundled with the sunroof option? Both of them have pretty cheesy interiors.

They bundled in leather interior, fog lights, xenons and the sunroof. All I would want is the xenons and the sunroof. The Evo also doesn't come with cruise control, which is huge for me. I owned a GTI without it once and drove that car coast to coast solo several times and swore I'd never buy another car without cruise control again.

The '05 STI has a much nicer interior compared with the '04 STI, but neither the STI nor the Evo can match up vs the S4. The S4 is far more luxurious, but it's nowhere near the performance of either the STI or the Evo.
