I"m confused about which fluid to add to my Manual transmission.

I want to add synthetic (AMSOIL because its made in town) but dont know which grade to look for. they have for instance ,, 75w-90 or so on but don't have a GL 4 rating which my manual calls for , the manual also says i could alternatively use a single grade HD engine oil SAE 20/30/40 spec API-SE or SF .

i thought i was set on using one but i called a Twin cities Mn dealership and they recomended using ATF in my MANUAL transmission because of the cold weather???? i thought he was crazy so i am holding out for some forum insite. thanks

I emailed RedLine about this. They recommended ATF, too. Hope that helps.

Not unusual. My F-150 takes ATF in its manual tranny.

Royal Purple makes an ATF specifically for manual transmissions.

Thanks for the response just wanted to make sure its my first BMW so i didnt want to screw it up just yet me likes :buttrock

The reason why i decided to change the fluid was because i noticed a mild vibration through the stick when the car was not moving when i have the clutch out and it goes away when i push the clutch back in could this be a bearing or another bigger problem that i can catch now before it breaks something else thanks

You're getting a vibration when the car is in neutral and the clutch pedal is not depressed?

yes, its not constent but is a come and go vibration happening at least every 20 seconds and is not loud but can hear it with no accessories on. the noise goes away when clutch is depressed.

its a vibration felt thru the stick and feels like the engine is missing but its not.

When you have the clutch pedal in, you actually disengage the transmission from the engine roatation. When the car is in neutral and the clutch pedla is not depressed, the engine rotates the mainshaft of the transmission, but the transmission does not send power to the output shaft.

So the problem you describe would tend to indicate a transmission problem rather than a clutch problem. I hope this does not alarm you, there could be many other things that would cause a vibration. You might want to have someone look at it.
