I'm now in the Bay Area, missing the canyon runs among other things. I don't have my own map, but you can reference the one from fatemaker's link. This is all from memory, so I don't have the exact street names. Pick up a map just in case you happen to get lost.

On the PCH from Santa Monica, turn right onto Las Flores (Duke's restaurant on opposite, ocean side) and continue past the houses/apts/school. Later on, there will be some houses here and there, but aside from fellow enthusiasts (car and bike) and those who live in the area, it's not busy.

Follow the main road up the mountain. (According to the map, it looks like you can go straight towards Stunt or left towards Piuma. I don't recall this split, but I always take Piuma). After the technical portions, you'll pass a little development on the right hand side as you make an easy left up the mountain. As you straighten out, you'll end up at a T near a fire station.

Turn right and continue down this main road. Be careful and watch for the T, otherwise you're in for a long drop. Continue going straight and you'll head up another mountain. As you come close to the peak, you'll see a few boulders facing the ocean. A little bit further is another run-off. I took the pic below at said run-off. If you're up for some relaxing, bring some water/food and a lawn chair and enjoy the view. If it's clear, you can see downtown LA.

After this, continue in the same direction down the mountain (you can see the pyramids on the right as you go down). As you near the bottom, you'll make a big u-turn and should see sizable run-off with a picnic table. You still have some more nice driving before you reach a small community.

You'll finally reach the stoplight at Piuma (I think). Turn right and take it easy for a mile or two. At the next light, turn left. There is a fruit vendor on the right-hand side in the Spring/Summer on weekends. Perhaps he's there on non-rainy days still?

Once you pass the parked cars, you should be able to open it up. This area has some good sweepers. After a little while, you'll reach a stop sign. To the left will be a port-a-potty, in case you need to make a pitstop.

Otherwise, go straight through the stop sign. Before you reach another area where you can have some spirited driving, you'll then reach The Rock Shop. Stop if you want to check out some bikes.

Continue past this area and you'll go up the mountain for some nice driving. There's a stop as you near the top where the Malibu meets usually stop for pics.

Once you're on your way, you'll soon hit a stop sign (Las Virgenes I believe). If you still want to do some driving, go straight and take an easy right at the split (this is Mulholland I think). It gets pretty slow at times (technically), but it's still nice. You'll eventually hit the PCH. Otherwise, if you're done, turn right at Las Virgenes and you'll end up at the PCH north of Geoffrey's. Take it easy since you're not familiar...have fun!

If you're planning on going through these canyons over the New Years weekend i'd recommend not - with all the torrential rains we've had over the past few days there will be lots of rockslides and mud and debris and water runoff on the roads even several days after the rains end. It's usually undriveable after a good storm like we're having now.

Great info thanks everyone-

LAroadster- Sounds good! I guess we'll have to wait when the rain is over as Randywalters suggestions.

Happy New Year!!!!! Remember don't drink and drive.

Wow the weather is great this morning ! From my computer i can look out my living room window and see the hills above Malibu clearly (about 20 miles as the crow flies). I might just let the E30 out of the garage and take a leisurely drive through the canyons anyway and hope the roads aren't too bad.

January 1st is historically a day for the cars to invade the canyons.

Well i went to the canyons today - on the way up PCH i spotted a bunch of awesome cars gathered up in the Trancas Canyon Starbucks parking lot getting ready to go on their yearly New Years drive so i stopped in and checked out all the high-dollar cars for a while.

Mulholland Hwy was a little trecherous - lots of rocks and mud and water in the roadway, and one big rockslide completely blocking the downhill lane around a blind curve. I usually drive these roads pretty fast but today i just took it easy.

I hung out at the lookout for a while talking with some of the car guys and we saw a motorcyclist slam into the guardrail at the hairpin. He was ok but his bike was damaged so i drove over and helped him get his bike ridable so he could get it home (i had my tools in the trunk).

Then right about when i was ready to leave this gorgeous restored '66 Olds Toronado pulls into the lookout - driven by Jay Leno. So i stuck around and talked with him about the car; he had it converted to rear-wheel-drive and it has the front and rear suspension and brakes from a Corvette underneath, and some trick custom alloy wheels made up to look like the original hubcaps. The best part was a 455 ci twin-turbo V8 pushing over 1,000 horsepower ! This car was a total sleeper.

That is so awesome meeting Jay like that... that car was featured in autoweek a while ago when they were giving their coverage of Sema. Looks like a beast!

That's pretty cool about Leno. I don't care for his show, but I do appreciate him being a car/bike guy. He showed up at The Rock Shop one time and helped a guy tune his bike since he couldn't get it to start. Anyways, hopefully it clears up down there by next weekend...
