A few Months ago I bought a staggered set of M contours and put them on my 97 328i. The front tires are 225/45/17 and the rears are 245/40/17, all sumitomos. I have been told numerous times that there should be no rubbing issues at all, however when I take a turn fast or have people in the back it rubs.

Normally I would just roll my fenders, but according to a few different body shops there has been work done on my driverside fender, and if I try to roll them it will crack the bondo.

So my question is this: Will a different brand of tire OR a different tire size (like 235 on the rear) solve my problem?

ALSO

I've been told that the inner quarter panel and the outer quarter panel are spot welded together right at the lip and if I cut or grind it off then it will seperate the two panels. Is this TRUE?

Basically what I want to know is, what can I do to solve this problem. I am planning on doing my suspension soon and I plan on using koni's and sportlines and I want to be able to tuck the back wheel a tad.

ANY comments or suggestions are greatly appreaciated. thanks

btw I did search.

I would think the tires should fit with no rubbing, But since your car has been hit in the rear, it makes me think that is causing the problem.

Figure out where it's rubbing (inside, outside, up) and that may tell you how to fix it - narrower tires, bump stops, less or more offset.

Has anyone here ever cut or grinded their fender lip? If yes what were the results. Thanks.

you dont wanna get involved just buy some 235's and sell your 245's and call it a day my rims are bigger than 17 and i have 235 in the rear and 225 up front and no rubbing. my rims are 8 1/2 inches wide

Thanks for the comments. I'm having a local bodyshop take a look at it in a week or so, but I think I will just get 235's in back.

NYCBIMMIN: Did you have any problems with the inner and outer quarter panel separating due to cutting the lip off?

Thanks

I Have No Problems So Far.......actually I Did The Whole Process My Self It Took A Bout 3days To Finish! I Cut The Inside Lip Out Then Sanded It All Down ,then Primed It , Then Painted With A Rustproof Appoxy Paint.......to Tell Ya The Truth It Came Out Amazing ,there Is Not One Ruff Edge On The Inside And Nothing Is Chippin Or Cracking. Its A Fairly Easy Job As Long As You Have Paitance And A Steady Hand To Cut! ...any Questions Feel Free 2 Pm Me...good Luck!

Yeah I think I'm going to get 235's all around or 225 in front and 235 in back. It just sucks that my back tires have lots of tread left.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I would get the rear inspected by a reputable body shop and get it fixed. You don't want a car that was involved in an accident and was not fixed properly.
