View Full Version : broke the radiator neck on my E36 M3 tonight
gobuffs 12-20-2004, 11:49 PM Driving home at 5pm on the tollway I notice steam. I pull off at Spring Valley. Typical driver side neck failure. After lookinjg at my paperwork from the P.O. it was last replaced 47k miles ago. I guess I was due.
Happened at 5pm...had the car running again at 7:30 (including an hour and a half for my dad to get there with the coolant, water and radiator.
Guess I will be changing it again in 40k miles as a prevenetative measure.
hinzm3 12-21-2004, 12:33 AM Jeez, 47k that sucks. I went 78k on mine, I guess it was a lucky one.
Hows the beast euro project coming along?
Damn, already fixed. I was hoping you would be looking for an aluminum radiator. I have one I need to sell. Glad to hear you got it fixed though!

Well I kinda need to get home and have a car to drive to work tomorrow.
Details on the aluminum radiator you are trying to sell. I still need one for the project car.
Status on the project car....525 pan should be in today or tomorrow. I will swap the dual pickup pan out and that pan in, put on the tranny and try to get it in the shell on Wednesday. Then it is will sort of ready for the cage builder. I still need to take care of some rust issues first. But, I still need to sell the other Euro motor to get the funds to pay for the cage.

More info on the radiator. I might be interested.
hinzm3 12-21-2004, 12:03 PM When are you planning on having the car finished Bruce?
bimmerd00d 12-21-2004, 12:12 PM odd, my stock radiator lasted til 131k, on my 2nd one now. Damn plastic necks.
It is a Zionsville radiator with the large aluminum endtanks. It retails for $499. I have had it in my car for about 2 months. It is coming out tomorrow. I bought it hoping to resolve heating issues on track, but swapping back in the mechanical fan solved those issues on track. I put it in anyways, but need to sell it since I am selling the car. I am putting in my S54 radiator I have instead which still has better cooling capacity than stock. I am open to offers.
Mike
97Msedan 12-21-2004, 01:06 PM $250 picked up if it wasn't what was giving you the heating problems. I guess the only reason you are selling is to make the car somewhat closer to stock. Are there any problems like cracked welds or fitment issues.
Thanks!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is still in my car right now sitting outside my job. I am selling it because there is no reason for me to have dumped $500 into the car when it does not need it at all. I am selling the car as well, and the new car I am getting already has an aluminum radiator in it.
97Msedan 12-21-2004, 01:54 PM How much picked up, whenever you get it out of the car?
Texas M3/4 12-21-2004, 04:10 PM Scho - how many miles on the S54 one? I'd be half tempted to see if you wanted a few bucks to trade in my stock one when you do yours. Mine was replaced...30k ago or so. Wow..doesn't seem like that long though as it was only a year and 1/2 ago or so.
Tomorrow is my last day at work. Any time before the 30th I could bribe you with booze or steak dinner to help me finally replace my RTABs? May also drop in my camber plates if a alighnment shop is close. Sorry to miss the meet btw...was in DC seeing my sis married off. Work keeping me too busy lately for anything else.

Yeah, I dont mind helping at all. As far as the radiator thing, let me see. The S54 one has about 10000 miles on it. It was new less than a year ago. I still have your watch and pliers too! :stickoutt
97Msedan 12-21-2004, 07:02 PM PM sent about the Zionsville radiator.

"Finished" is a very relative term. :-)
I was hoping to have it driveable by the April DE. I doubt I will meet that goal. I need to sell some of these things (motors and my other E30 M3) to have the cash to start buying parts.
Oh yeah...I think I should right of first refusal on Scho's radiator.
