View Full Version : Colorado Winter Track Day

Seeing as how most of the tracks in colorado are generally unscheduled on weekends, I figured it might be a good time to setup a track day for those who can't make them on the weekdays during the summer.

Our options are
- 2nd Creek
- Pueblo (I believe we just have to call beforehand so they can open the gates)
- La Junta (No clue what their policy is)

2nd Creek and Pueblo are both $60/half day and $100/full day regular rates. Again, La Junta, I have no clue.

Here is a map of the colorado tracks, http://chasinracin.com/track-locator/states/co.shtml .

I'll throw up a poll to see where people want to go. From there, we can setup a weekend date. Once we get a location/date figured out, we can spread the word.

Feel free to throw out any suggestions and Mike, if you want to bring the BBQ, I won't stop you... :D

EDIT: Since Pueblo and La Junta are located near each other and are quite a drive for some of us, I figured we could have an option for a 2day track weekend, and staying overnight.

Uh, isn't La Junta another 4 hours away from Pueblo?

La Junta is approx. 50 miles directly east of Pueblo. You can see its exact location on the link I posted above.

Lets see what we can get going on the BBQ :)

I have been meaning to drive the Pueblo track but 2nd creek is close and inexpensive. Does anybody have any experience with La Junta? Track conditions, Full/Half day prices?

We are working on setting up another track day in late January. When were you thinking of putting this all together?

We can put this all together as one event if you want. I just figured we should plan something on a weekend during the winter.

As far as La Junta, I have never been there but have been told that its a pretty informal setup, similar to 2nd Creek/Pueblo. If people are interested, I can give them a call and get the details.

I enjoy 2nd Creek as well, but figured we could "spice it up" and try somewhere else. Entry fees are the same, just a little extra for gas money. And who knows, we might be able to work out a discount if we get enough people.

As far as an exact date, I dont have anything solid yet, just a weekend after the hoidays and before March.

Really? Hmm, I thought Graeme told me it was at least a 4 hour drive away. That means it's really only 3 hours away...

I decided to go ahead and get some info on La Junta.

Looks like the property is owned by the city. Spoke with the guy who manages the track and he said its really informal. But get this, $35/day per car! :eyecrazy He said they need at least 5+ cars to get the track open for the day. He also said that they prefer to only open the track when its warm out because the city doesn't want to repave the track again. Spring time works best for them, when they know the weather will be nice but he said he will work with us if we get a large group together and would like run the track.

So theres the info on that.....

Well, this is getting better and better.

Just for shits and giggles, I thought I'd call the Continental Divide Race Track in Mead (I-25/Longmont). Rumor was that the city of Mead had shut them down because of noise regulations but that is not the case.

They are open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-6pm for test/tune. For cars, it is $150/full day and $90/half day. A little more expensive but still a bargain in the big picture.

This is obviously a bit closer than Pueblo/La Junta, which might interest those who dont want to travel much.

For sure, just try to get a helmet in advance. It can be a PITA to borrow one at the track.

Did you get your cooling system all figured out?

got the radiator, h2o pump, t-stat, belts and all changed out, but when i was cycling the system, there was a ticking noise coming from the engine. might be blown headgasket cause there was some yellowish residue on the oil filler cap. been way too busy lately, so it's been sitting in front of my house for the past month or so. hopefully i'll be able to check it out and see if it's really a blown headgasket, or maybe the relay's, or just valve tick. thanks for all your help though spencer.

hopefully i can get to experience some track action and join your ranks this summer. torn between a 97-98 m3 sedan, or 95 m3 coupe, any suggestions? saw your white m3 on i-36 a month or so back, and looks mean as hell. by the way, is your e30 gray? saw one last week or so on north bound wadsworth around 80th ave and it was hauling ass

If we're setting up a day and expecting lots of people in attendance, I say we shoot for one of the tracks other than second creek. SCR is something you can go to pretty much anytime, but going to one of those other tracks would be something different (I haven't been to any of the other ones), and like someone already said, we could stay there overnight and do a two-day event. I can't track the car during the weekdays anymore, so a two-day thing would be perfect for me.

The other tracks are very expensive, thats why Second Creek is chosen most of the time.

The 29th of January is a Saturday. I will confirm with Bob on Friday that this day will work.

I know that PPIR is $12-$14,000 per day, and thats on one of their "Cheap" days.
This translates into about $400 per driver per day.

I know that this isn't the only option to other tracks in Colorado, but Bang for Buck Second Creek is Second to none. :)

But seriously, If you guys think that you would want to try out a different track, speak up. We are more than willing to drive a few extra miles to meet everybody there.

I definitly agree on that Mike! At Second Creek you get more shifts for your buck! Althought PPIR is a blast to race at, it is a drive to get there minus pueblo which is farther! If you want to race at PPIR, being a non group sort of orginization, then on May 9th through the 11th is a race day for individuals who would like to race the track! It however costs between $130-$178 per day, mattering on how packed it is and how greedy Leslie feels :shifty !
I personally like SCR for many reasons, no serious rules as you will be dealt with at PPIR inwhich are forcefully enforced heavily, second, SCR is fairly close to most of us individuals on here, third, its a great track and is fairly technical V.S PPIR which is 85% straights and 15% turns in which you need LAMBO power to make it fun, fourth, second creek is small and the people there are cool. Thats just my two cents and I need to stop talking! :D

PPIR? I don't know why you guys are even mentioning it. Thats a big name venue which isn't going to have the same test/tune policy as the mom&pops tracks (liability concerns). Not to mention its not much of a track IMO.

know that this isn't the only option to other tracks in Colorado, but Bang for Buck Second Creek is Second to none.

2nd Creek is the same price bracket as the other tracks. From the info I got, La Junta is cheaper and Pueblo is the same price. Continential Divide is a bit more but still very reasonable.

I'm in the same boat as Jason, I'd like to visit some of these other tracks but if everyone wants to go to 2nd Creek, I'm still game for that.

Yeah, its hard to argue with SCR when it comes to convenience and bang-for-the-buck (I brag about it to my friends in CA who pay $250-$400 just for 1 track day with a HUGE group). But considering how many tracks we have around here and that their costs are about the same, I'd like to give the others a shot. And since its such a long drive and I can only do weekends, I'd rather make the most of it and do 2 days. The thing about SCR is, its available pretty much anytime...for the next year anyway. Most of the times I have been there have just been on a whim, coming home from flatirons and noticing what a nice day it is, then just stopping at home to pick up my helmet then its back on the road to SCR for the afternoon (Spencer remembers that). If we were scheduling a day very soon, I would say SCR, but something we're planning like this, I would go for something different. Just my vote, but of course I'll go wherever its setup anyway ;)

I forgot to add, this is the one thing I dislike about SCR.
There's nothing worse than being on a track with a bunch of people who use different ettiquette when it comes to passing than you do. I remember following someone who was a student in a vintage racer who wouldn't "let me" pass for 2 laps, of course I wasn't happy. My side of the story: he never gave me a point-by. His side of the story: I never flashed my brights at him to signal my intent to pass. We were using different rules, and thats how accidents happen and tempers flare.
I know when big clubs run there they have a drivers meeting beforehand to discuss the rules, but I think there should also be some general rules there for test/tune days.

^ Yes very true Jason!

I have also found at SCR, that there are many reckless people at the track! Of course racing is the art of taking risks and pushing hard and maximum ability of your vehicle, but there are some drivers out there that are just plain stupid! :rolleyes

The reason I've never gone to an open track day is because if some idiot dove below me on a corner and caused me to go off, I'd literally rip his freaking head off and shove it so far up his ass he'd be able to look up through his throat.

If you're bringing a full on race car to the track for the purposes of racing, that's one thing. When you're on the track with a bunch of amateurs in street cars of differing performance and driving levels, not having strict rules in passing is just complete and utter LUNACY.

Spend the time to get good at driving so you're always in the highest run group at drivers schools. You'll enjoy the freedom and don't have to worry about some a$$hole f'ing up your car and potentially your life.

I notice this a lot too, most of us are pretty good about that, but there's a bunch of egotistical people out there that don't think anyone should be passing them.

This always happens with the big horsepower cars with drivers that can't drive worth shit, you're on their ass the whole time but they never let you pass then you hit the straights and they walk on you, and it's starts all over again.

I got stuck behind an integra for 3 laps last time, I had to go 7/10ths the whole time, it was a old guy but a newbie and I didn't want to do the spencer on him(dive bomb) because I don't trust his driving skills.

aceves

It doesn't help that there are only 2 or 3 places where you can safely pass at SCR. Some may say there are more places, if you're experienced, but who's to say that the person you are going to pass isn't going to freak out and take you with him.
