How do I check whether my fan clutch is dead? When I started my engine, I could stop the fan with my a magazine.

Next, start engine cold. Fan clutch should engage for a few seconds (as evident by fan roar) then disengage and allow fan to "idle" regardless of engine speed. Finally (the MAIN check!)(may be hard to do in cold climate) allow engine to warm up and block most air flow through radiator. If the fan clutch is working properly, it will sense air flow getting HOT and eventually engage fan (as evident by fan roar). Monitor temp gauge because with a blocked air flow through the radiator, things will warm up. DON'T allow the engine to overheat. Once the fan engages, unblock the airflow and allow things to cool to normal operating temp. If the fan never engages and the temps start getting exciting, you've probably got a bad fan clutch! Be careful and don't get tangled in a spinning fan or belts. Good Luck! |
