I'll be purchasing a set of track wheels soon and I'm leaning towards the SSR's. Wondering what your guys thoughts/experiences are with these wheels.

Any advantages/disadvantages between the 17' and 18's on the track? Will the 18's fit on an E36M3 without rubbing?

Looks like the biggest sizes on tirerack are 18 8.5's and 17 9's or the 18 9's in the silver version.

My current setup is Koni SA's on stock springs. This may change eventually and would like the wheels to still fit say if I go to coilovers or different spring rate. I don't want to roll fenders or anything like that.

Thanks for your opinions.

EDIT: I'm not sure which tires I'll be running yet either so any info on the SSR and tire combo's would be great as well.

The 17x8.5" SSR Comps are the most used wheel for a reason. You can fit 245/40R17 hoosiers on them, 235 or 255 toyos, 245 or 255 kumhos, anything you want. I recommend them.

i have 17x9 comps with 245/40 kuhmo mx's (for now) and run a 10mm spacer in front...i'm running stock suspension at the moment (will be changed very soon) so i dont have any fender rubbing issues....once i wear out the mx's, i'll most likely be going to 255/40 ra-1's or something similar and may have to use different spacers and massage the fenders...

i'm very happy with the wheels, they cost a bit more than the kosei K1's i was also considering but they are lighter and 1/2" wider....i also think they look great on m3's (i have silver comps on my avus blue car)....ssr comps are probably the most popular track wheel choice for e36 m3's (at least its what i see the most of at the track)

17s are generally a better choice than 18s because of tire availability and cost of not only tires but the wheels. Some might think 17" wheels bend less than an 18", I would think any quality wheel won't bend period. Probably the only reasons to run an 18" wheel is for style and to clear a BBK.

I'm most likely going to get the Kosei's. You can get two sets of those vs one set of the SSR Comps. The comps aren't that much lighter and for my purposes I don't think the extra 1/2 inch (9's, vs 8.5's) is going to matter.

The SSRs are also quite a bit stronger. Ive heard of some racers (not DEs) who have Koseis bent after races just from going off.

I run 17x9 SSRs, 15mm spacer up front, none in rear, Advance Designs and have no issues.

Ive run 245/40/17 Hoosiers, 245/40/17 Dunlop SSR, 255/40/17 RA1

Excellent info, thanks guys.

Looks like the 17 8.5's or maybe the 9's is the way to go for my setup.

I run 17" SSR Competitions on my 98 M Roadster and can attest that they will bend if you take a hard hit on a track edge after a spinoff. That said I got over 50 track events out of a set before having to replace them. You just need to avoid hitting holes at the end of track out berms and going off track at over 100 MPH (Turn 8 Thunderhill).

SSR`s are very good and they are excellent for clearing Big calipers... but a little expensive :(

I personnaly like the OZ supperleggera`s for the price, quality and looks! :buttrock

What's the diff between the SSR Comp & the Comp H? TireRack' specs say the H is heavier. Look the same as the Comp?

H is heavier because it's an 18' as opposed to a 17'.

TireRack lists both 17" & 18" in Comp & Comp-H for some identical widths. Somethings different??

Comp H are the silver ones, the Comps are the anthracite ones.

**jack on bretts computer**

the SSR Competition is *not* a super strong wheel. It won't ever crack on you like a cast wheel, but it bends pretty easily.

I couldn't find a lighter wheel though =)

Please guys, if you seek to give advice - give the correct advice...not what you think may be correct... :rolleyes

The Comp H is heavier because it is stronger. (you can get it in either color).

It has an extra width of TIG wlded aluminum on the inside of the wheel (the seam is obvious up close) where it / they are most prone to bending or getting dinged in an off track excursion. The weakest part of ANY wheel as far as bending, is the inside edge away from the obviously strengthened face of the wheel where the added support is.

Yea SSR comps bend at the track if you go off course. I have a slightly bent 17x9 Comp autographed from one of TC Kline's racecar. If it cant be fixed, it's gonna be a kewl 15lb coffee table conversation piece!
