View Full Version : Modding you're X5
NORCAL/335i 12-10-2004, 07:11 PM Hey, whats up? My wife and I have a baby on the way so her 1999 E46 328i is going bye bye. We've decided on a 2001 or 2002 X5 4.4i. :D Went and test drove some last night. :buttrock I can't seem to find any aftermarket performance parts such as CAI kits, chips, or exhaust. Any good sites that you guys could steer me twoard? :)
Thanks, ABE

NORCAL/335i 12-10-2004, 07:36 PM Is Dinan the only one? I'm not too concerned about warranty issues. Something a little less pricey perhaps?

mbanks21 12-10-2004, 09:01 PM Let me know when you get the vehicle Abe. Dinan is really the only place that has everything youre looking for: intake, exhaust, software, manifold, strut tower brace, brakes, etc, all in one place. Gimme a holler when youre ready to do something, I can hook you up with Dinan.
Dblock2151 12-10-2004, 10:23 PM Exhaust - Eisenhaus
Intake - Gruppe M (Very Pricey) or get Dinan
I hate Dinan, but for our cars, I think it is a good way to go. I just think they charge way to much for their products.

Yeah. Way over priced. Like AC Schnitzer and Hamann. :( Good products though.

ronin009 12-11-2004, 02:09 AM Umm...guys we need to remember we are dealing with pretty expensive and complicated pieces of machinery. If you wanted a car that is easy and cheap to mod try a honda civic. I am not trying to be a dick. I just think that if you are going to go out and spend between $40,000 and $60,000 on a car that you should demand nothing but the best when you are going to modify that vehicle. If it is too expensive for you now, save up the money and mod it next year. Trust me it is worth the wait. Its like buying a $10,000 HD Plasma TV and then hooking it to a $50 VCR from K-Mart...wait till you can afford the HD DVD player from Best Buy...it will be worth it...
mbanks21 12-11-2004, 08:37 AM Totally agree, except for the $60K car= Dinan to the $10K plasma= BestBuy. Bestbuy isnt too far off from Kmart.

I knew someone would pipe off with the "you should've bought a cheaper car to mod" argument. No offense taken by the way. :) But with the E46 there is a treasure trove of tuners that are far better priced than Dinan and get you the same, if not better results such as JC or ECIS or Technik. Dinan has very good stuff but its too expensive for what you get. Small gains (at least on the E46) and name recognition. And I'm not spending 60K on my X5 I'm paying around 30K to 35K. If I could afford 60K I would'nt be trippin on the Dinan prices. :D Thanks everyone for the input.

ronin009 12-11-2004, 02:57 PM By the $40,000 to $60,000 price I ofcourse was talking about the new price of the vehicles. But you also have to remember that the E46 is the honda equivalent of a civic where as the X5 would be a pilot and how many people do you see out there modding honda pilots vs. modding civics. Poeple dont mod SUVs (SAVs). I think maybe they are too complex with their all wheel drive systems and massive amounts of weight. Also with all of those other companies that make parts for E46's all or most of those parts void your warranty. The reason the gains from Dinan are so small is because they work hand in hand with BMW to create their parts and because they dont go to extremes BMW allows their parts to be covered under the factory warranty. So you may pay alot for a few gains, but as a Dinan owner I can tell you that it is much more than I need and worth the price since I dont have to worry about being turned away from the dealership. just my two cents.
dave is cool 12-11-2004, 04:59 PM All you need is a set of big rims, and you're set.

You're point is well taken and your two cents is appreciated. :D If Dinan is my only option, then Dinan it is. :D

m5james 01-17-2005, 10:44 PM Check out the 540/740 boards....same motor, more "supportive" opinions without the Honda flaming :nono :alright

dont mod a piece of shit X5. save some money and burn it
That's pretty worthless.
There's a company with an ad in Roundel that has an intake for the X5 V8's. It's around $300. I think the company is www.fdc-aerofilter.com
Might be worth a call.
HSRX5 01-18-2005, 01:31 PM Personally I am only going to deal with Dinan. I really like the fact that a performance upgrade can be done by a BMW dealer and is covered with a factory warrenty.

It's actually covered by the Dinan warranty on anything they make that voids the BMW warranty.
