View Full Version : Tire guru's ... question
NoSoup4U 12-01-2004, 02:55 PM I do not plan on driving the BMW that much this winter in the mid-atlantic region. If it snows, the car is staying inside -- but, I do need new tires for cold weather though b/c I plan on driving it some just to give it exercise over the winter.
I currently have S03's on there and that will not work well in temperatures below 32 degrees.
So, I was looking at getting 245/40/18 snow tires --- at all four corners so I could rotate them; or 225/45/18's. These would be on the stock 18x8 and 18x9 tires. Is 225 too small for the rear wheel? Can I get away with it?
I was thinking smaller = better.
Alternatively, I could get all-seasons that are rated M+S (mud and snow).
I would rather be prepared than sorry if I get caught out in something ... but, maybe snow tires are overkill for me.
So, first, go snows or all-seasons? If all-seasons, any recommendations for tires that have the M+S rating?
Second, 225/45/18's at all four corners or 245/40/18's at all four corners?
Third, can I go with 235/45/18's at all four corners? Would that fit on a 18x9 wheel with no problems?
TIA
p.s. -- did a search on ebay for "bmw winter" -- some pretty good deals for those with 14-17" wheels ... might want to check them out.
jkuper 12-01-2004, 03:19 PM I got 225/255 combo last year from TR - Dunlop Wintersport M3. It's a multi year investment and now that I have a spare set of OEM 18s I am going to just keep the tires mounted.
But that's me, a multi-year thing for you might not be appropriate :stickoutt Sorry, I can't resist.
Seriously, I was pretty happy with them.

Any reason you were forced to go staggered? I would think you would want to put the narrowest tire possible on the wheel.
Thus, I was thinking maybe 225/45/18's at all four corners if 225/45/18 can fit on a 9" wide wheel.
Or, 235's or 245's at all four corners.

I think I waited too long...By the time I got around to actually ordering them, they sold out of 245s. I don't think 235 was a option. So, I went with OEM size.
I think 225 might be too narrow for 9", maybe 245 all around...
Looks like TR has
235/45-18
245/40-18 <- would be my choice $188 Low Stock
Or talk to Eric about Vredsteins, I am putting those on E30.
jkuper 12-01-2004, 03:31 PM Also, we simply do not get enough snow to worry about having the tallest, narrowest tire. The car will handle like ass with 225 in the back, even in the winter.
vjlax18 12-01-2004, 03:43 PM 17's will fit, and you'll have a taller sidewall.

True ... but not with the BBK.

true, that's why I wonder if it's even worth getting the snows. Just a decent all-season with M+S rating should be sufficient. If it's snowing out there, the ///M is not going. I'm calling Pete to come pick me up and take me to work :stickoutt

It's only worth it if you drive on all-seasons year around. If not, get snows.
Persian BMW 12-01-2004, 04:55 PM nosoup- I could get you new tires for about 50% off if you'd like. PM if u'r interested. I just put Michelin All seasons on my 15in bottle-caps for the winter. Called NTB and Mr. Tire and they were asking $450+ for 4 tires that I got for $150 (+ install).
PM if u'd like.

Don't worry, the 318 sits lower so it will work better as a plow. :shifty

magnetic1 12-02-2004, 01:59 PM James,
Like you said 17s wont fit over your BBK.
You can't store winter tires forever either, just like how you cant store R-comps for 3 years and expect them to have the same grip. I'd give yourself at most about 3 seasons.
Vredestein just came out w/ a really "high performance" winter tire called the Wintrac Extreme and comes in 18" sizes that are speed rated up to W.
Wintrac Extreme (http://www.vredestein.com/autobanden/Page_Tyres.asp?UserSessionID=64005244&BandCategorieID=1&BandToepassingID=2&BandTypeID=480)
email me James and I'll get you more info/pricing.
jkuper 12-02-2004, 02:03 PM And they come in 265/35 R 18 !!!

Thanks Eric ... I'm not sure what size I need -- what do you recommend, 18x8 and 18x9 rims ...225/40? 235/40 at all four corners? etc .. Email me a price please.
p.s. It is your FRIGGIN' honeymoon -- why are you on BF.C.?????
post pictures of hot local chicks or ban!
p.p.s. -- pm beastmaster and island52 -- they are local and should be able to take you to some of the more local/desirable places rather than all of the touristy places. E.g., have you made it to matsumoto's shave ice place yet (north shore) ... If you have time ... take a local island hopper and get to Kaua'i.
p.p.p.s. -- how bad are you burned? :stickoutt

Today is my last day here... We started in Oahu for 2 nights, Maui for 5 and the Big Island for 3.
Last night we hiked to an active lava flow (5 miles).. well worth the hike.
No pics of hot chicks, how about hot liquid MAGMA!
