View Full Version : Strobe law in PA? themadhatter 11-30-2004, 09:42 AM who knows what the law is in PA for strobe kits. I'm looking to add a 6 bulb kit to my E36 as part of it's car alarm. Juan ///M325 11-30-2004, 09:51 AM As long as the strobes are not activated while the car is in motion you should be OK. The problem comes when people want to pretend they are driving an emergency vehicle. Also, I would limit the color to white and not blue and or red. 1996 328ti 11-30-2004, 09:53 AM Technically you are not allowed to add any lights that did not come from the factory. Using any extra lights would be illegal. I don't believe it is a PA law but a Federal DOT law. For instance mounting extra fogs would be illegal. Yes people do it. :nono Although using aftermarket foglights that are properly adjusted is probably legal unless you use all 4 foglights. It would not be illegal to have them on the car. Just if you used them on public roads. I can't see how strobes which are used on emergency vehicles would be legal. How do I know? I read it on the internet. To really know the answer I would ask a PA State Trooper. I'd ask a few of them. Ah shoot. As the case in reading messages before I am awake. Since the car is not moving and you are using it with an alarm, go for it. What kind of battery drain would there be? themadhatter 11-30-2004, 10:11 AM not worried about the battery drain - a large Tsunami Industries (modified optima yellow top deep cycle) installed and has about 3 hours + of reserve power. my biggest concern is drawing attention to my car when somebody is either messing with it or towing it away (theft). An authentic police siren is going along with the strobes for the install to attract as much attention as possible - ESPECIALLY from law enforcement personnel. A GPS enabled tracking system is also going into the mix for maximum paranoia protection. I'm probably going to add a pain generator to the mix for really pissing off any potential crooks. I currently park the car in a parking lot at an apartment complex when I'm home and store the car in a private garage when I'm not home. I'm not worried about the garage, I'm worried about that open parking lot. let me know what you think. -Ron jterp 11-30-2004, 10:45 AM Holy christ -- didn't you move to PA from jersey? How can you be so much more paranoid? What's a 'pain generator'? ? Is it as cool as it sounds? :D simsima325 11-30-2004, 11:01 AM Sounds like a cool project Ron. Shouldnt be an issue if its for your alarm man. Friend of mine had something like this installed... he was from FL but school in PA. John V 11-30-2004, 11:01 AM I'm guessing it's a capacitive discharge system used to energize the body and discharge to the intruder in the off case that someone tries to mess with the car. Illegal, dangerous, and a really bad idea. Illegal, dangerous, and a really bad idea. Actually most pain generators are just really loud (air horns). Some companies have designed electric shocks into the seats but I'm pretty sure those are illegal in the US. ---Eric Jed 11-30-2004, 11:06 AM Ron, you've spent waaaaaay to much time in Africa with these theft derrent devices. Honestly, I thought you were going to go flame thrower or retractable blade ala South African cars. John V 11-30-2004, 11:13 AM Actually most pain generators are just really loud (air horns). Some companies have designed electric shocks into the seats but I'm pretty sure those are illegal in the US. ---Eric Sweet. Smarter, but still dumb. Honestly, I don't get car alarms. When was the last time that you turned and looked when a car alarm was going off? 99% of the time they're false alarms - someone parked too close (i.e., ten spaces down). Even with strobes, police sirens, air horns, it's just a nuisance. I'd spend the money for a GPS tracker if I were really concerned about my car. AlfaEric 11-30-2004, 11:22 AM Sweet. The pain generator (really loud) will make people turn. The flashing strobes will allow people to see exactly what car is making the noise. This combination could stop some theft. The best thing is to simply leave nothing in the car and have a crappy radio. :shifty Ron, how are those locks on the E30? :stickoutt ---Eric themadhatter 11-30-2004, 11:37 AM LOL - what locks on the E30? what are these locks that you speak of? :D the E36 is getting the works to make me feel better at night when I park the car in a community parking lot. GPS tracking, immobilizer, fuel cut off, strobes, police siren and a pain generator. the pain generator isn't exactly in air horn, it's an electric horn tuned to a frequency that well...it generates pain! :stickoutt for those of you that never pay attention to car alarms, you've never seen my Tahoe's alarm go off.... besides, I just dropped about seven grand into the car this month, I'll be damned if I'm going to let some punk grab my car without a fight. -Ron AlfaEric 11-30-2004, 11:40 AM LOL - what locks on the E30? what are these locks that you speak of? :D the E36 is getting the works to make me feel better at night when I park the car in a community parking lot. FastrTHNu 11-30-2004, 12:06 PM stobes/neons and other lights seem to be tolerated in PA just as long as you are not moving. (have white stobes in the rear tails) As for the pain generator, works great! Short story.... Just got the car, friend of mine hops in thinking the alarm is off. (i thought it was too, oops... :devillook ) well, let me tell you this, from about 5FT. away that nosie hurt my ears... my friend JUMPED out of the car pressing his ears against his head! (NO JOKE) I am assuming it works the same as a dog whistle, only for us humans. just my .02 I still like this idea of an "electric chair"....could get ugly if your driving and it goes off. OUCH! I need to start putting the kit together so I can have it installed before the turbo goes in. thanks! But for maximum protection, i would get one of those electrified door handles and paint for when someone tries to key the car.....:D Jed 11-30-2004, 01:33 PM Bah -- might as well punish the people outside the car too -- they probably did something wrong that day. :lol themadhatter 11-30-2004, 01:33 PM guys ever watch The Jackal? Bruce Willis sprays something on the door handle of his minivan and it kills the guy who touches it. Yeah, no need for an alarm on that. Taking that E30 318i is punishment enough. :D themadhatter 11-30-2004, 01:45 PM Yeah, no need for an alarm on that. Jed 11-30-2004, 05:57 PM I'm probably going to add a pain generator NOT a SECRET WEAPON!   themadhatter 11-30-2004, 06:40 PM I have an agent who will write a declared value policy -- but there's no reason to carry two policies -- if you want to go with DC you might as well drop your other coverage. DC? I'm with allstate right now and they told me that they offer a declared value policy. I have no problems negotiating the value of my car or even showing receipts. NADA says my car is worth 13k - jersey sent me a letter stating I didn't pay enough sales tax on it when I gifted it to myself :rolleyes the turbo kit is 7k stuff from rogue is about 8k(?) motor is about 5k suspension is 2k other accessories and upgrades easily make 5-6k so I'd have no problem doing that for the underwriter/agent. would your contact be willing to write the policy as a supplement the same way a person can purchase auto-x or DE supplemental insurance? not looking to get double paid either - say if the car is jacked, allstate will pay me $10 (for example) I would be looking for the additional $25k from this extra policy. I'm very interested. -Ron ...jed, you're gonna ruin it! :D Jed 11-30-2004, 06:42 PM ...jed, you're gonna ruin it! :D oh. :( I fixed it. :) bellavus 11-30-2004, 11:48 PM guys ever watch The Jackal? I'm very interested. -Ron ...jed, you're gonna ruin it! :D "DC" was a typo -- i meant "DV" (declared value) I was in a somewhat similar situation as you -- my car (in the insurance computer) is equivalent to a 1965 mustang - which meant that if it were stolen i would be reimbursed 10-12k... Instead of doing that I got it insured with a declared value of $30k. I didn't need to show receipts or get it appraised -- my agent just did it for me (possibly because he's a buddy of mine from college -- i dont know if they make some people justify the value or not). I do not think that it would make sense to write it as a supplemental policy, though, because a bulk of the cost is just in getting the policy established.. ie I was trying to cut down my insurance cost so I had him price it with a declared value of $25k instead of 30 -- this only changed the policy price (per month) $20.. So you would be basically paying for two full polcies (adding it as a "supplement" wouldn't make the second policy any cheaper).. or maybe they do -- I guess I shouldn't speak for him. I'd be happy to give you my buddy's contact info -- he can answer your questions much better than I can. He's down here in MD but I'm insured for PA so i know that's no problem. themadhatter 12-01-2004, 11:38 AM thanks, I'd really appreciate hitting him up for some quotes and business - especially if he can write me a supplement. Either way, I would like to get this coverage so somebody is going to be writing me this policy if I can help it. :) shoot me an e-mail/PM with the contact info when you have a chance. he doesn't work for Geico, does he? I refuse to give Geico my business for their nazi business practices. thanks, Ron |
