I am the proud owner of a ML500 and Land Rover Disco 2, and was looking into buying a X5, but I take my SUV's off roading. Has anyone taken your X5 off roading? If so, can you tell me about it. Are they any upgrades, like suspension lift kits available?
I saw the X5 this year at the Dakar rally, and it was awesome, but don't know if we have in the USA the aftemarket parts they have in Europe.

I've taken a X5 and a Discovery off-roading and out of the two the Discovery performs better in almost every aspect, except dust & sand gets in through the door sills on the discovery. Not sure about the off-roading capabilities of the M class.

I don't know how off roading this is but my best friend and I use our cars (2001 X5 and 2003 Range Rover) to chase deer around his property, through fields and the woods - it's not mountain climbing but it's still pretty rough...his range outperforms me but I handle just fine...

My brother has a 4.4 and it sucks when there is any mud. We took it out in the corn field prior to the harvest, across from my house and it almost got stuck, but his has the sport package. It also is horible in the snowy weather were having at the moment.

The newer X5s with the X Drive do very well off-road. I went to the BMW Performance Center in SC and drove X5s through streams, over hugh off-camber rock hills, a little mud, etc, and they did extreamly well. So well, that's why I'm in X5 forums just looking around. My wife and I are looking for a nice 3.0L.
