I have a 2002 3.0 w/ standard stereo. As you know, the sound is adequate, but not great. Would you recommend replacing the speakers to get a crisper sound? Or do you think the stereo itself would also need to go?

If you think replacing the speakers would be the answer, any recommendations? Also, what size speakers are in the various locations in the vehicle?

thanks.

I feel you on the sound system, I had the same issues but didn;t have the money to do any major upgrades. I ended up just taking out the stock subwoofer (crap) and replacing it w/ a jlaudio sub - it helped alot but on songs w/ little to no base or when I'm not looking for any bass the sound is still sub par.

Thanks Nick. Where is the sub-woofer on this vehicle? And how do I get to it?

If your car is so equipped, it will be located in the passenger side panel in the rear hatch. Unfortunately, without extensive custom fabrication, you cannot just "drop" in another subwoofer.

To also answer your question, upgrading the speakers in the X5 makes a huge difference in your overall sound. The speakers, and only the speakers, are responsible for the majority of the sound quality that you perceive. Sure, there are other aspects, ( amplifier, source unit, wiring, etc.) but the speakers are what actually produce the final sound that you hear.

Without quality speakers, your sound will remain subpar. The subwoofer addition will undoubtedly help the "overall" sound of the system, but the best question to ask yourself is "what is my system lacking?"

If you can identify exactly what is lacking, and from what I can tell, you seemed to be looking for more details in your music, you will want to replace your speakers first.

Your X5 has 5.25" components in the front and rear doors. Start here, and graduate later to a subwoofer, and you will be Greatly rewarded!!

Hope this helps!

May want to consider getting a 10" Infinity sub that drops right into your X3, comes with amp/sub and connects to your stock stereo system. This could be considered a drop in because all you makes is one pre-wired connection to your factory amp/harness.

www.bavauto.com , $499.00

Nick,

How did you connect the JL? Did you just use the existing wires from the stock amp or did you wire in a new amp?
