While out crusing today I witnessed a Guy crusing around with his son in a 2001+ 911 Cabrio. He takes notice of me and follows through traffic. I get onto the highway and he takes off. So about 20 min ago I decide to go to the grocery store and get some dinner. Coming back I see a set of HID's in my rearview mirror.. he pulls up 2 cars back , light goes green and I take off slow , roll into it a bit. Then he comes flying by nearly hitting a car changing lanes beside me , driving in the center turning lane... I get to the next light and it's on..I figure I am gonna get schooled , but Oh well... Turn off the traction control , put the window down so I can hear...Light goes green.. 1st gear...right beside him , I spin in second a bit as the prielli snow sports protest such violent acceleration...Well long story short I shut it down in 4th Still beside him as we come up to the next light and get ont he brakes. I jump in the turning lane and roll down my window...he does the same.

me:" You should have spent more money""

him: ""I was just palying with you kid"

me: ""haha Through 4 gears?? when were you gonna open it up in 5th??""

Then I drove off.

Keep in mind his car is a cabrio and had the hard top on it..But I thought he would have raped me... I don't buy the BS that he was playing with me.. HE was on it from what I could hear

It depends.. was it a 911 Turbo? If not, then he only had a little of a hp/weight advantage...10 hp/lb to your 8.5 hp/lb.. if he had the Tiptronic shifter instead of the 6sp, you could have had a launch and shifting advantage over him. He might have wheel spun and undershifted, or even overshifted for that matter. Overshifting is a common error among inexperienced dragsters... dunno.. he could've been playing with you too! :D

Yeah, well, with a 100 extra HP that's what I woulda thought too! ;) He probably wasn't a very good racer...poor etiquette on the road doesn't mean he is a 'sporty' driver... ;) My second to last car was a Passat 1.8T with Tiptronice (same Tiptronic that they put on Porsche, just a little slower). It was great (for wifey), but if you tried to drive sporty with it, there was a pretty big delay in shifts - about 3x longer than if I would have had a manual.. plus the ECU controls engine speed so you can't over-rev a little with Tiptronic to get a little extra kick when upshifting. I actually used to find it was better to put it in Tiptronic and just let the ECU upshift at the top of the powerband, it was actually quicker than me upshifting with the stick. There is a software upgrade that will make the upshift a little quicker, but still it's nothing compared to manual. I raced my buddies Jetta 2.0 5sp (before he added the turbo... :rolleyes) and he kicked my ass every time off the line, AND up until 3rd gear, even though I had a solid 50hp on him and TONS more torque from 1900rpm to 5000rpm than him (Passat 1.8T 174ft/lbs at 1950-4800rpm). The tiptronic also adds a good 100lbs to the car because you have a full secondary transmission case for that unit.

In your case there were a lot of factors that contributed to your win, but I think it was a clean and solid KILL. The 911 cabrio is more of a mid-life-crisis Porsche compared to the others in that line - not as sport tuned I mean - and I think it showed it's 'conservativeness' against you. Congrats on KILLING a PORSCHE! :D

Isnt a 911 Cabrio 320hp and 275 tq?? Or is that an older one?

My buddy has an 03 or 04 Porsche Carrera Convertible 4S...the new one with the body that looks like a Turbo....well anyway, he has G-tech and whenever we do runs its always 13.9-14.2 so if it was an automatic Carrera and his top was down, it makes sense that you were side by side the whole time considering your M3 runs low 14s all day.

Yeah but how exact is the g-tech. I've heard about them dont get me wrong. It's just my opinion unless you go to a speedway or a dyno I dont think you can completely rely on those things. My dad drives an 03 carrera 4s and it definitely feels faster than low 14's and high 13's.

Well, is your dad's C4S auto or manual? The manual C4S, because of its AWD, can launch much better, C&D got low 13's, like 13.2, with it. I'm sure an average driver with the manual tranny makes the C4S a mid 13's car. But C&D also tested an auto Carrera convertible, not the 4S, and got 13.9. The 4S weighs more than the regular Carrera convert, so like i said, an auto C4S will run around 14 flat. :redspot

Interesting yeah I didnt know that stuff about what C&D gave it, but yeah I know what your saying about the AWD. For one I didnt know the 4S weighed that much. Well yeah his is manual so that's why it feels faster I guess. I figured you were talking about manual before but I guess you meant auto.

Yea, auto because the guy with the 97 M3 was wondering why he kept up with a C4S. It had to have been auto or maybe just one of those "im rich but i dont know how to drive but no car could possibly be faster then my Porsche" type's, which is why he said he was playing with the M3.

Dinan, How fast is your 325i? Ever race any auto 330s?

No but I beat my car manual by a half a car to the 1/8 mile and i would have pulled more if we would have been able to keep going. But the strip we went to was only a 1/8th mile strip. Now I have a system in my car though and suprisingly it does feel somewhat slower. Not alot but when I accelerate sometimes it does. Then again I havent raced the 325i manual again so i dont know if the weight has had any real affect. By the way I have not raced a 330i/ci auto but have always wanted to.

Per Porsche.com the 911 Cabrio is 320hp at 6k rpm with a curb weight just over 3000lbs, it's a 6sp... however the Tiptronic 911 is over 3150lbs and it is only a 5sp Tiptronic, which of course means slower moving into the power band, heavier car, and poor shift response even if it IS a Porsche. No clutch is still no clutch...
