View Full Version : M5 vs CL 55 AMG

last night, on the way home, just as i get on lakeshore drive, i saw a CL 55 amg. my engine just finished warming up, so i was ok to race. pulled up next to him, revved, and dropped it just so he know what's up. i look over and he definetely wants to play. :D I let him go first and then punched it. We were even for like a second and then i started to pull. i shut it down with about 1 carlength in front because speeds were over 100 and it's a 45 mph limit with lots of cops. we did this couple more times, but much shorter sprints because of traffic. as i was getting off on Norht Ave, i gave him a thumb up and noticed that he was following. Maybe he wanted to go from a stop?. We get stuck at the light next to each other and spark up a conversation.

Me: " Nice ride, didn't think that you'd play"
Him: " Thanks, what do you have under the hood?"

At this point i'm like what the f**k, you couldn't see the M5 badge as i was pulling away? I mean come on, i was in front of him even after the race when we were stuck in traffic. how could you not know what's an M5. Just proves that people who buy Amg are not really enthusiasts or at the least bit of car knowledge.

Me: " 5 Litter V8"
Him: " That thing is fast!"
Me: " thanks"

After the light turned green, i turned right and headed home.

Before everyone starts to doubt this, he had two people in the car, driver and passenger, the CL is heavy as hell aslo. In addition, i think it was the 2001 Amg not the Kompressor V8. Aslo he might have asked me what i have under the hood because it was the Kopressor V8 and he was shocked at the results knowing that he has 100hp on me.

Nice kill!

The '02 CL 55 AMG has 500hp but it's not really that much faster than an E39 M5. At least not according to the numbers.

M5 : 400hp, V8, 0-60 in 4.8s, 1700kg
CL55AMG : 500hp, supercharged V8, 0-60 in 4.4s, 1895kg

And on the track the M5 would kill the AMG.

By the way, the '01 CL 55 AMG has 360hp and does 0-60 in 5.6s.

That yr the CL 55 was never ever ever supercharged and the M5 has at least 40 more hp than that particular year. And Wasya S4 I thought you said it was not a compressor v8 then in your last statement quote: Before everyone starts to doubt this, he had two people in the car, driver and passenger, the CL is heavy as hell aslo. If it was a 2001-02.It was N/A.2003 and up are S/C.

nice kill Im not a mercedes fan at all, my girl loves them and we just test drove a clk55 and it barely felt faster than the clk500 she's about to get and in no way felt like it could compare to my m5. Ill squish that thing all day long. and when i get my supercharger then well really see whats up with amg.

I've driven the CL55 with kompressor (496hp >500tq) and can assure you had you raced that car the outcome would've been quite different to 100mph. Nice kill of the na though.

CLK55's not supercharged, and it's barely quicker than the C32. E55/S55/CL55/SL55 on the other hand are a different story. Guess you never seen Lonman's video of his own SL55 going against his own M5, which the M5 got raped soo bad.

I'm not the biggest MB fan either. But I have to admit, the sound of absolute ferocity I heard when I raced an E55 a few months ago was utterly indescribable.

I can proudly say I was killed by both an M5 and E55. :redspot

You have to admit though it is a little confusing. You tend to think that all AMG are Supercharged, when there not. With BMW we know that "M" are not FI from factory, yet they are just as strong.

i think a CL55 is for really old podiatrists and their golfing buddies. its just a bootsy looking car.

now a clk55 (prior to the honda accord rip off styling) was a sick looking car. but still much more suited for crusing along the highway on the way to palm springs. high speeds at a straight away with a nice soft ride. racing should be left to preformance cars :stickoutt

65 yes 55 no,still supercharged.!

It all depends....

All AMG "65" models...the SL65, CL65 and S65 are V12 bi-turbo.

However, not all "55" models are forced induction. The SL55, E55, S55, CL55, CLS55 and the SLR are V8 supercharged. There is one CLK model (DTM street version - europe only - limited to 100 cars) that is also V8 supercharged. I'll try to attach a photo of that one...

The current remaining AMG "55" models that are normally aspirated are the C55, CLK55 and SLK55.

Hope this helps :)

the current 7's alright once you get used to the look. the 5 series is better than the 7 IMO because it retains a little more cue from the previous 5. The new 3 however is a big EWW. The rear looks like something that should be on a Japanese car, and that front, it looks like if they are trying to copy Audi's new and already ugly looking corporate grille. You mean like the guys at Car & Driver, Road & Track, and pretty much every other auto review on the planet? :lol

FWIW - I could [easily] afford a 7 series, but it never even made it to my short list when I considered a large sedan. Looks, performance, and iDrive were the deal-killers for that car. BMW has taken a wrong turn into the weeds, and I'm hard-pressed to account for it.

If the E60 M5 had the styling of the E39, and had a rational user interface in the cockpit, I'd have my deposit on one right now.

If the E60 M5 had the styling of the E39, and had a rational user interface in the cockpit, I'd have my deposit on one right now.

well some people, few as they may be have a taste for new technology and daring design, not the same ole boring squared sedan, same ole turn knobs and everything else. its not hard to figure out what goes on with idrive and most that dont like it are simpletons who really wouldnt know what every button in a nissan sentra does but with all the bad reviews it doesnt appear to me that bmw has all that much trouble selling them at least not in the areas that i have been (chicago, atlanta) and note i said MOST people, and what makes you think that editors and test drivers make enough cheese to buy one anyways, and assures you that they dont have one and are being pressured to write certain things. that does happen you know

and to me buying a car because some guy wrote about it in a magazine is like going to a movie because ebert and roeper said is was awesome. :buttrock

http://photos.e46fanatics.com/data/500/9586after_RENNtech_021.jpg
i find this utterly rediculous there is really no way to compare these two cars but if you insist. vote we can....... you paid 50k for a car that is the same size as the toyota tercel i had in high school, and on top of that put those aweful wheels on it. those are some kind of ugly. an opinion i would have kept to myself until someone had to open their big mouth

and since i know a lot of people here may not like chrome heres a pic of the wheel in hyperblack

Naaah, he's made his position clear: people who don't agree with him are either (a) poor or (b) simpletons. Continuing the conversation at this point wouldn't even qualify as sport - it'd be like dynamiting a trout farm just to say "wow, look at all the fish I bagged!". He has ceased to interest me, and he's giving BMW owners a bad name.

As far as the wheels go, difficult to tell in a pic.
Most look better in real life.
Not a fan of chromed wheels anyway.

is that the only thing you know how to say? not fast enough to think of a comeback?? or is it just insecurity?

I'm sorry this rim hurts your eye, so here it is again :lol

The AMG rims are nice, but somewhat heavy and not necessarily the best deal in town. Several companies make 1-piece forged rims which are stronger and lighter than the AMG variants, and cost about the same. I see no problem with upgrading from factory hardware when there's a better alternative.

As long as we're talking Mercedes rims, however, I'll offer my [very biased] perspective that these are the best-looking rims for the SL :)

everyone has their own opinion but i find that most of the people that hate on the new 7 series are the ones who cant afford one. other than that i see them on the street everyday all over the place. and personally i never liked the old body 7 so the new style is definitely better as far as im concerned. the 5 and soon to be 3 series are a different story though. the could have stayed the way the were with just a few minor adjustmentsCan't afford one! WHATEVA!!!!! That's a silly generalization! You're biased towards BMW's anyway and thats OK.It's your right.I still disagree with you about the powerfeel between the 5.0L motor and the N/A 5.5L MB motor.I've driven many and would still buy the 55 over any of the 5L v8 MB motors. The power in the 5L motor seems similar to my C43 and an N/A E55 can blow my car away!

Absolutaly. I am actually looking to get an e38 for an every day car. I think they are the most classy looking sedan that BMW has ever created.

Good choice.

E38s are also quite a bargain these days, which suck of course for those of us who have had their car for a couple of years or more... :-O

OF COURSE THERE ARE PLENTY OF BMW'S I DONT LIKE EITHER OLDER AND NEWER. SO TAKE IT HOW YOU WANT IT. reason = student and I got these for less than $500 for the set from my friend's company who makes BMW, MB, Audi replicas in Taiwan. They also makes the rims for Moven and some other company, which includes Katana.
if you take a look at other wheels from Katana you'll see that all their rims are replicas from various other well known brand with their own design.

what is your reason for getting your replica rims? when you can afford two $80k cars in your stable? why not custom order some forged rims from HRE or IForge? You can get them in all the sizes you want in chrome or polished aluminum.

btw, lets go back to Lonman's video of his SL55 pulled on his M5. How come you didn't answer if you've seen it or not? The W211 E55 is about the same performance as the SL55 given its power to weight compare to the power to weight of the SL55. Or have you seen that German video that had the E55, RS6, and the M5 all lined up together on take off all the way around the oval track. The result was a win to the E55 with RS6 trailing by 2 cars and M5 behind the RS6 by 1-2 car lengh.

so the back of your wheels say made in taiwan :rofl
maybe ill go to mcdonalds get a happy meal and it will have some of those in it :lol

The reason i got the wheels i did was because i simply doint believe in getting wheels that make you pay for a name. i just liked the way the katana's looked. glad you wasted time researching katana wheels just to have a comeback you :booty

and no i havent seen any video and dont really care. i never even said anything about an sl55 clown. all i said was that the clk 55 didnt feel much faster than a clk 500 and that i dont like s-class any year and frankly as long as bmw still makes cars ill never buy a mercedes but i dont bash anyone who drives one. but lets see your c32 pull away from my m5 then you talk trash chump, until then i could care less about a kill story or a video or a mercedes.

keep in mind that on the back of your rim it says MADE IN CHINA. btw, what comeback? I was simply inform you that those are replicas based on what you said earlier "AND WHOS TO SAY WHO MADE IT FIRST" which shows that you clearly had no idea these were replicas. Now you claim you bought these because you like the "look" of the Katana? yeah, right :rolleyes
:rolleyes

I was talking about your comments toward the E55 which you CLAIM you can pull on one after 80mph when in truth the E39 M5 is short of the breath even to the heavier SL55 which has the same performance as the E55.

you said you don't bash on those who drives a MB then what are the comments you made towards coolcarlski, treynor, and me. :lol :lol
