goto kelly blue book .com (kbb.com) look up price for individual seller and dealer retail and average the two for a starting point. the closer you go to retail the more the dealer should provide such as extended warranty at no charge blah blah blah. if the dealer is selling the vehicle as is with no additional services or goods I wouldnt pay over individual seller price
Good Luck

Oh yeah dont go by the prices they have posted on the vehicle do the research for a fair price, the goal of the dealer is to make as much money off the transaction as they can. Yours is to pay as little as you can! there are lots of used x5's looking for a new home, if you get a stubborn dealer go somewhere else.

Good point on checking with other dealers. I went 180 miles to get a better deal. The dealer even picked up my trade and delivered the X5 to my house.
Do plenty of research on vehicle condition. If service has not been performed I would not touch the car, no matter what the cost. If you are purchasing an X5 I would highly recommend a certified BMW X5. My X5 came with 100000 mile warranty which is good until 2007. A regular car dealer can not offer this particular warranty.
I have driven both the 3.0 and 4.4, and I went with the 4.4. A little more power is never a bad thing, especially when the vehicle exceeds 4000 pounds.
Have fun in your search. This is what I consider the best part, talking cars.

Oh yeah, if you want the factory navigation, find one with the unit already in the SAV. I purchased one without navigation, thinking it would be an easy install and I am finding out that may not be the case.
Once again, good luck in your search. :alright

Just to give you an idea.. I just got what i consider a good deal on a used 2003 X5 3.0, has everything except NAV. 31k miles and clean condition inside and out. Paid $34k and that's in New York. Got it from an independent dealer that gets overstocks from local BMW dealers. I think the original owner must have gotten beat on the trade-in value as I got it relatively cheap. Blue Book was $37k and didn't include the options. Edmunds rated it at $41k with the options.

Paid $25,500 two months ago for an '01 3.0, auto, premium package, sport package w/ 4.6is wheels, and 55K miles--right about at wholesale book. Local Infiniti dealer had it on their lot for >3months and REALLY wanted to move it. It felt good to take the dealer for a change...heh, heh...

That is a good deal!!! I bought my 2001 X5 a month a go 4.4 with 43,600 miles for 29, 650. Clean as a whistle! Got it at an auction. Just carried it to get the handles changed and get another key (Got to love that 4/50,000 mile warranty) They will fix anything under that warranty! Loving the 4.4 with the manual/automatic shifter!!!
