Searched here AND google but found nothing specific.

Anyway, just wondering the effects of running DI-water only in my cooling system. I just did my entire cooling system (radiator/pump/thermostat housing/thermostat/hoses/etc) and thought running DI water only for a week or two wouldn't be a bad idea since I wanted a complete-COMPLETE coolant flush. However, am I risking massive corrosion here in sunny LA (no freeze risk)?

Thoughts?

As a side note, I'm going to be running OE Honda Coolant not BMW coolant. The car had been run on Prestone II since 5k (and had the original water pump & thermostat at 117k!).

why on earth are you going to be running honda coolant instead of bmw coolant in your bmw? this seems like a bad idea.

running on all distilled water for a week shouldn't be a problem as long as you dont see freezing weather and don't get the water so hot that it boils!!!

Running deionized water only is the same as tap water in terms of corrosion. Your exposed iron parts in your engine will begin to rust. Some other puposes of coolant is corrosion inhibitors. H20 only for more than one afternoon is asking for corrosion.

Especially since our engines are made of different metals at different parts.

Thanks...you were one of the ppl i was hoping would chime in. I recall your postings on coolant-good stuff! :buttrock

It's coming out tonight. :devillook

Thanks for that. I've been topping up my coolant reservoir with distilled water because I haven't gotten to the coolant flush yet. Guess I'd better do it soon...

priced dealer coolant for my honda.
price was $12 / gallon before tax for 50/50 mix. which at 2 gal. would be $24.
think about it, this is for a net 1 gal. of 100% coolant. this has in the last 2 years become a great marketing gimmic to sell 50/50 by the jug. let the buyer beware. a fool and his money are swiftly parted.
my honda now used zerex at $6 /gallon and i add the 50% water.

You should still run BMW coolant in your BMW. I understand what you're saying about buying the concentrated coolant rather than the watered down 50/50 coolant but I'm not sure what that has to do with using Honda coolant in a BMW.

Per the Zerex website, the Honda OEM coolant is Green, and it is replaced with Zerex G05. Zerex G05 is also the recommended replacement for BMW coolant (G48). Therefore, logic would dictate that Honda cooland will work in a BMW.

But,

BMW coolant = $15
Honda coolant = $12
G06 = $9

Personally I would get the G06, or if I felt like spending extra money, get the BMW. I wouldn't bother with Honda coolant unless I lived in the boonies and the only car dealer within 100 miles was a Honda dealer.

Actually, 2004 OE Honda coolant is now Blue.

And while I'm paying a bit more for a 2-gallon fill, at my price of $9.17/gallon, it's about the price of 1 gallon of BMW coolant in my area.

It's my feeling that Honda coolant is best in industry. I've seen sooo many instances of 7-10 year-old 90,000 mile old honda cooling systems being cracked open for the first-time--->(timing belt/water pump jobs) and looking absolutely perfect it's sick. Perfect water pumps. Perfect-looking coolant. And with the suggestion in Roundel that OE MBZ coolant trumps OE BMW coolant + the untold number of factory waterpump failures + my own car's completly original cooling system @ 117k miles with a non-BMW coolant, why not go with a coolant I know is even better than the Prestone II i had in the car?

Call me crazy.

you're both crazy. stick to bmw blue, distilled water, and maybe some waterwetter.
