View Full Version : 850 Vs R32
RANE2001 11-09-2004, 01:42 PM Well I was driving down heading to work about to jump on RT3 west bound when next to me pulls up a red VW R32, he was looking at my car and I was looking at his it looked pretty nice, he had wheels and exhaust, so the light changed and he cuts me off to jump on RT3 west bound, I knew he wanted to test me so I shift into sport mode and we go around the snake bend on to RT3, he takes off ( that sucker was fast I was impressed) but I step on the gas and my car shifts and I blow him away going in and out of traffic. I let off the gas and he comes next to me so I lower my window thinking it is over and he comes up, by the way he had two girls with him in the car, and takes off again, so I give chase again spanking him, so I lower my window again and just smile at the girls in the passenger and in the back seat. They take the RT 17n exit and I continue on RT 3...I wish there would have been less traffic, it would have continued on for a little bit more....I am still impressed by the will of the driver, car and driver did pretty good. And I finally got to test out the 8.
slickav 11-09-2004, 01:43 PM Holy crap that is an awesome machine :buttrock
Always wanted one, but I heard the maintainance is alittle TOO much $....
Armo95 11-09-2004, 01:44 PM Nice...I love the 8-series.
R32's are low 14 second - high 13(good driver) cars with traps ranging from 98-100mph.

maintainance is like any other BMW only difference is that if you have the 850 instead of 6 spark plugs you have 12 and you also have 2 batterys, 2 air filters and a 22gl gas tank that when you drive you can almost see the needle moving towards empty, but everytime I park my car I still look back at it a few times before I go into my house.

Aye to both - Good kill BTW -
I do the same things with the M6 - esp if I romp on it - i'll burn a 1/4 tank quick. and I gaze at my M each night before i go to bed.
Mblaster 11-09-2004, 06:49 PM I love 850's. Someday I'd like one.
One of my buddys has 2 850csi's
Freaking crazy :buttrock
Ice Rado 11-09-2004, 07:43 PM wow...ur car is hott...in a serious sort of way :eyecrazy
RANE2001 11-09-2004, 07:44 PM MBlaster Doesnt your M5 have the 3.91 LS Diff? Man I need one of those diffs..Want to trade? :) :) :) :)
Effervescent 11-09-2004, 08:22 PM Bravo.
It's really fun when their sig others are in the car.
I thought those r32s were faster than 14's. Guess not.

Yep, my car is an April 90 build.
Cars built after Sept 90 are built to different specs.
In my car you have to be ready to do some shifting when the throttle gets planted hard. :D
Red Ribbon Army 11-09-2004, 10:02 PM man that's a beautiful car i was wondering how those would do against an e46 M3 at highway speeds. Anyone know?
Alias 11-09-2004, 10:13 PM Stick or Auto? I was looking at buying an old one of these, though I thought it would be slow cuz of auto.
Mblaster 11-09-2004, 10:17 PM I'd guess the M3 would walk a 850ci w/auto
but an 850csi/manual would leave the M3.
:cool
s_ribs 11-09-2004, 10:38 PM Oh man, every time I see an 8-series I'm reminded just how much I wish I had one. Someday... someday.

My M6 does too :D
and I'm not trading :) - but yes - if I romp on it - 1st goes by really fast...
RANE2001 11-10-2004, 12:19 AM Yup I am looking for a diff to do the swap on mine...the only one that fits is either the 91 M5 or the 750 that has the 3.91..not all 7 series have the 3.91 diff. I forgot what year, but the M5 only came with the 3.91 in the 91 model. I am looking for a used one. as for racing an M3 I dont know how I would do, but I am open to some challenges. :)
dandp 11-10-2004, 12:37 AM How about an M Coupe? :buttrock

They are heavy. 0-60 times aren't even as quick as my ZHP... and you'd think with AWD they'd have an edge down low out of the gate...

now that I have the 535...I get to go buy the 8 next....auto or not, thats a damn fine machine, also, I have heard great things about the early V12's, in durability and modibility, even checked out someone who had gotten mechanical throttle bodies to replace the motor driven ones
An E46 M3 is lots faster than an 850, even an 850csi (if I recall from C&D tests, it was 5.6 to 60mph and 13.9 at 100mph in the 1/4). I raced my friend's E46 M3 on 505 north of Vacaville and he had no problem with the M5 at triple digit speeds and the E34 M5 is no slouch in 4th gear between 100-135mph.

I dont know, dude..
have you ever been in a tuned 850? I have...
I can see the 91 M5 vs the e46 M3...
but an 850 CSI? dont quote C&D figures as some fomr of bench race..start the run at 90..and go from there

they are heavy, but with a decent launch, the r can hit 1.8-1.9 0-60' so thats still not bad. i guess they guy wasnt driving well off the line because i would guess a stock r32 should have kept it off for a bit longer from a stop. From a roll, i can see the r getting walked on, with many other cars. v12 to vr6, top end wise i dont think its comparable. ;) btw, the 850 with a dinan chip or something was the first car i got to drive when i was 15 1/2 years old. one of my managers at my dad's restaurant had one and he let me take it for a spin. Damn it was nice, it was automatic too. But he sold it because too much problems with the engine overheating or something.

Well my boy has a 2002 M3 but we have yet to race. I do have my car chipped so it claims to give me a total of 330hp/490Nm I dont know what the Nm stands for and also takes the limiter off giving me a top speed of 180mph. I have yet to dyno my car but will be doing it soon.

You're talking to a drag racer of sorts... cutting 1.8 60' times are routine with RWD cars OEM on OEM tires (my Z3 3.0, as an example, which had an LSD stock). Heck, on OEM tires without an LSD (yeah 1 wheel spinning versus 4) I cut 2.0x 60' times in my ZHP everytime I ran it.
AWD cars should be cutting 1.5-1.6's if launched as God intended... ;)

i know what u mean, i do a lot of drag racing too. well, on OEM tires, i really doubt you can get 0-60feet with a rwd car of 1.8's. Sorry, its not really easy. An sti and evo driven properly will get a 0-60feet of 1.7's. If an awd could do 1.5... well, it wouldnt be call awd any more... it'd be called, no wheel drive... and in the shop. ok, really gay joke. understand what i mean though?
btw, whats faster, zhp or e36 m3.

Well, you're wrong about 1 thing. I routinely cut 1.82-1.86 60' times with my OEM Z3 3.0 on OEM tires. It was RWD with 3.07 OEM gears, OEM Torsen LSD, on OEM 245/40-17 Dunlop 8080's.
And I've seen AWD cars cut 1.5x 60' times, all the time. It's all about launch technique.
All things being equal (driver, track, etc) the E36 M3 should be faster than the ZHP, it has a slight hp edge, torque edge, more aggressive gearing, and it's lighter weight, and has an LSD OEM.

do you have any slips(your z3)? i have seen rwd cars run 1.8's and stuff, but with racing tires, or they have serious power. I don't know what kind of 0-60feet z3 3.0's usually hit, but i know that if u hit 1.82 stock with everything stock, you must be hella of a driver.
I have seen awd hit 1.5's too, but not stock. I have seen as low as 1.6x for an sti and evo, but probably around 1.7x-1.8x stock. 1.5's on a stock awd car seems pretty unbelievable, or very rare occurance.
Yeah, i personally would expect the e36 m3 to be a tad quicker than the zhp. I have raced a zhp (with the r32) and started to pull on it from a roll(slowly but surely), but i have yet to really race an e36 m3, exept with my wrx which i pulled about 2.5 cars and kept it there and he couldnt catch up after that. He was also modded, as was i. my friend almost bought a zhp, but he is now looking at the s60r.
oh btw, what is the curb weight of the zhp? and have u done anything to ur zhp?
SilverStreak 11-11-2004, 07:10 PM ZHP is OEM. I've been drag racing for 18 yrs, and have about 8800 runs under my belt. I have plenty of slips from my Z3, I live 20 mins from Atco Raceway, sea level track, good prep, etc.
On Drag Radials, I was cutting 1.65-1.72 60' times with the Z3...

i'm gonna have to agree here alittle...just from my few trips to the track...this is avg drivers...i see rwd hittin close to 2.0...mostly mustangs...anything from gt to cobra...and i talked to a few guys sti/evo and they aren't really gettin much under 1.7 on stock tires...anything under 1.5 has to be either an exceptional driver or they really aren't on stock tires...i've seen a few e36s run and they never touched under 2.0...but their are alot of conditions that can affect it but an avg driver will never hit a 1.5 in awd

1.65? damn. i'll believe you, but damn, 1.65 is so fast for a rwd car. i'll do some more research and see what i can come up with for z3's with radials, see how others compare to you. i really had no idea that you can pull off that fast of 0-60feets with just radials.
i know zhp is oem, but wondering if you have anything done to your zhp. any modifications, other than stock.

Dare I suggest that you need to get out to the track more often? Not for nothing, but my personal first hand experience comes from 18 yrs of drag racing, hanging out at tracks like Atco, E-twon, and Maple Grove, more than just a few visits...
I cut 1.9-2.0 60' times in my 99 Mustang GT on OEM tires. The Z3 was much easier to launch than my Mustang was.
The 1.5 60' times I have seen on AWD cars were not on OEM tires, I thought I mentioned that (I may not have... :dunno).

BFG Drag Radials, 275/40-17's. Again, I have 18 yrs drag racing experience, and about 8800 runs under my belt in that time. I'm good, but I wouldn't say I'm great.
Having come from Z28's and Mustangs, etc, when I got the Z3, the Z3 was a breeze to launch well at the strip, especially with the drag radials on there.
I should also mention that when I cut that 1.648 60' time in my Z3, it was super-charged, pushing over 320 rwhp and over 290 rwtq, and it weighed about 2700 lbs...
But even still I cut some 1.7x 60' times before the s/c, back when it baseline dyno'd at 198 rwhp and 193 rwtq, on DR's...
As for the ZHP, OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer = stock. I have no mods to my ZHP, no add ons, no bolt ons, it's 100% original/stock, it's the same as it was the day I drove it off the lot.
