View Full Version : E30 M3 vs E39 5 series & Altima
calvin d 11-09-2004, 09:13 AM First Let me say that I'm not sure which 5 series it was (definitely not 540 or M5) and it was the older model Altima. I was coming from class last night and I was rolling pretty good trying to get home. I past the 5 series and then the next thing I see is angel eyes in my rear view. I switch lanes and he slows down besides me then guns it. I then noticed that there was a Nissan Altima running with him. Oh well, it's cool out so why not play a little. I pull back along side the 5 and we hit it, at first he gets a small jump on me but I quickly get ahead and slowly starts pulling on him until I had a good comanding lead. The Altima was a little behind the 5 but he didn't stand a chance, hey this is a family fight why is he getting involved? :nono Anyway we kept slowing down then hitting it but the 'ol M was running pretty good for having 170,000 miles and no rebuild yet. Maybe it's time for the 2.5 rebuild next year and few other goodies. If the silver 5's driver is on here, thanks for the run. It made the drive home a joyous occasion. :alright
Dwayne 11-09-2004, 09:24 AM If it wasn't a 540 or an M5, then it was either a 525 or a 530, or a 528 with angel eyes put in later. Your car must be slow if you only had a commanding lead on him, you should have been beating him like a redheaded stepchild :stickoutt

I'm not too sure about that. I may not be faster, but from a highway roll I seriously doubt one could get a "commanding" lead on me. And I can't imagine the same being true for a 530.

Just wondering, what type of power is your Dinan % putting down?

I have no idea...I've never dyno'd it.
GuapOh 11-09-2004, 03:10 PM Most likely the 525. Angel eyes means 2001 or newer. Previous models such as 528 can be retrofit with the angels.
I'm thinking 525 since it is relatively tame. My 530i which has been retrofit with paddle-shift out of an SMG e46 M3 and can run even with non-modified e36 M3. No way under God's blue sky that a Nissan Altima could hang with a 530i.
My business partner has a 2001 525 which is as weak-kneed as an 80 year-old granny. :help The difference between a 530i and a 525i is much more than the .5 litre displacement difference would have you think. The 530i sport is speed limited to 155mph and can reach it given the real estate. Rear-end, cams, intake and exhaust are bigger and better in every way on the 530 than on the 525. :D
FYI: Dinan S1 530i = 240 hp. :D
Hope this helps.
Scott528iM 11-09-2004, 03:54 PM According to Dinan I'm around 209hp with my mods.

what mods do you have to claim that you can hang with a stock e36 m3? the much lighter 330i can't even run even with me......how do you expect your much heavier 530i to be even with an e36 m3. and fyi, an altima 3.5 can pretty much hang with a 530i and then have time to wave and say goodbye.
Scott528iM 11-09-2004, 05:06 PM He said "older model Altima". Just like last night I had a mid 90s Maxima with a fart can and wheels try to bust a move on me, but he had nothing.
The newer ones are both much faster.

Sorry, don't mis-read me, the e39 530i has top speed legs similar to an e36 M3. I'm sure that the M3 gets to 60 MPH quicker than my car (6.4 secs) but once moving the car has very long legs.
Also, the 330i employs a 3.0" intake and MAF while the 530i and some early e36 M3's employ 3.5" intakes. That's 27% more air by volume. More air= more power. BMW's NO.s on the 530i manual vs. 330i show the 5 series to actually be quicker its extra weight notwithstanding. 5 series exhaust system is likewise greater diameter front to back, this also helps.
Elderly Altima's are a joke, basically Sentra's with nicer interiors.
Lastly, no mods really. I run a K&N drop in filter, not a CAI and have done no other engine or software mods. All mods performed have essentially been appearance related. I''ll hopefully be doing the Dinan S1 package with this years holiday bonus.

So how are you gonna run even with a stock e36 m3 again? sorry bro but if you ain't got mods you aint hanging with an M3 :nono .....M3s get to a 1/4 in low 14s @ 99 mph while 530s get there in low 15s @93. it's about one second difference to a quartermile and i don't see a 530 closing the gap after that....

You're being generous. Properly driven E36 M3's run mid 13's...
My 330 runs 14.0 at 97.5 mph... ;)

yes i am :D .......but i'm talking about what an average driver get with an M3. well, i've taken a stock 97 to 13.9 @ 99 i'm pretty sure you can take those numbers down some more but who's got more time on the strip (not strip club now) than you.....
SilverStreak 11-10-2004, 07:17 PM We've had some members run 13.5's in their OEM E36 M3's....
Phat Ham 11-10-2004, 08:37 PM stock for stock it would take a 540/6 to run with an e36 m3. Even then the m3 has the edge down low with the 540 pulling on the m3 when you get into the triple digits.

wow i thought i did a descent job of taking it to the high 13s but i guess not. :eyecrazy
