I'm curious how much power some street Cooper S cars have put to the wheels. Are there any over 200whp without too crazy upgrades? If so, what were they? TIA!

We did some preliminary dyno runs yesterday, just to be sure that we were in the right ball park for power. As always, we did the runs on our Mustang MD-250 load type dyno, with no SAE correction factor. This means that the numbers are going to be conservative compared to most inertia dynos running corrections factors. The tests were done on a 2004 MCS, completely stock except for the basic TurboKompressor kit running about 20psi total boost, no Aquamist, and stock sized pulley. There will ba a stage 2 kit which includes the Aquamist system, and probably an increased sized supercharger pulley, running more boost from the GT28rs. We used pump 93 octane gas.

Just for fun I also included the dyno runs from a JCW car with a RDR intake. These runs were done on different days and different cars, so they are not scientific, but just for entertainment's sake. Below are some of the vital numbers for each car. Note that the peak intake temperatures of the TK kit are considerably lower than that of the JCW car, even though we haven't yet fabricated the heat shield for the intake. As Mark pointed out, the intake side of the Turbo along with the filter are surprisingly cool, as confirmed by the intake temps.

TurboKompressor /JCW

Engine coolant temp. 190 /189

Intake Air Temp. 75 /95

Peak IAT 134.6 /161.6

Ambient temp. 66F /76F

There is also another company, SPI, that has a twin-charger system with I would expect similar results.

Otherwise, take a look at www.promini.com and their two project cars, one strictly turbocharged, and one supercharged.

thanks. That's impressive. How about one with the stock supercharger? just wondering if 200whp is common place. Thanks again.

I'd imagine there are at least 5-10 cars owned by individuals that have 200whp. It seems a pulley, exhaust, intake, headwork, larger injectors, and some fuel/ign. tuning will get you to, or close to 200whp.

There is a tuning company called BBR that offers a 275hp (flywheel hp) Mini Cooper S.

Our Eurobahn cars typically run 230-240 flywheel HP with Cold Air intake, our 20% reduction pulley kit, custom software with Remus exhaust. With an air to water inter-cooler or water spray kit can get you another 10-15Hp.

If you can do you own tuning, our Rotrex Supercharger kit is good to 300flywheel, but you better expect some major work to do to the trans.

Thanks. So what's been actually tested on chassis dyno? Have any of the customers posted graphs? If not, but they have dynoed, what sort of whp numbers are people seeing with those mods (stock blower/no head work except for maybe cam)? Thanks again.

If you are looking for proven HP that can be used everyday and even track use, I would offer that the Stage 3 kit from MINI Mania can make it happen and we even offer a factory replacement warranty. On our own race car with our Stage 3+ kit we have measured 230HP at the wheels. The stock Stage 3 kit will get you 200HP at the wheels with ease. We have now not only sold hundreds of these kits, we have built a number of cars for individuals with very demanding standards (Dale Earnhart- loves the car we built for him)!

I got a chance to drive Mini Mania's car and there was a huge difference from my car, which at the time had a 15% pulley, intake, and exhaust.

MINI Mania is the place to go for Mini tuning from what I've heard. They are the guys who did the tuning for the Coopers in The Italian Job. They've been tuning Minis since the old days and have been working with the new MC even before it came to the US.

I'm sure there are a lot of great places other than them (BBR, etc) but I personally would go with MM.

Bringing an old thread alive, any long-term effects from those of you that have done this mod? Detonation issues? Overheating?

Good to have you back, Phil. It seems the MCS comes from the factory running a little rich, so when you add in a pulley, it just leans things out. I have friends with pulleys and no software and they have not had problems.

It's good to be back and living in much warmer climates! So, what are these pulley's costing nowadays? Are they all pretty much the same or is there a specific brand that works best?

Alta's two piece design is by far the most popular, and the one that's most widely copied.

A 15% pulley will be fine on your stock ECU...software does smooth everything out, however. A 19% pulley will be okay on stock software but will lean out at higher RPMs.

So, how much do these suckers cost?

So, how much do these suckers cost?

They retail for $119.99, but our price is $109.99. The pulleys are always in stock (aside from the newly released 17% pulley). You can check them out here:

Installation is pretty simple and we do offer a pulley tool rental:

We just had a pile of MCSs on the dyno this past Saturday. We were seeing many high 170's with a couple of cars doing 183 and one showing 189 at the wheels. This is with Pulley (all of them happened to have the Alta 15%) intake, exhaust (varied) some with Alta intercoolers, some with misters, some with stock intercoolers, all had software ranging from MTH, to Unichip. So I would say with stock blowers, mid 180's seems to be about where they fall.

The Mini in european car (April 2005 issue) had these mods:

-Mini Mania Stg2 pulley
-Mini Mania/Schrick cam
-Mini Mania Intake
-Mini Mania Throttle body
-Mini Mania headers, cat, exhaust
-Alta Mini intercooler/sprayer
-evosport/Powerchips software
-Denso Iridium spark plugs

and made 202whp at 13psi. Although the graph here is comparing it to to a called "stock" run, it's actually a baseline without the cam and throttle body (but with everything else), and at about 93-94 octane equivalent. Car couldn't do it on straight 91 octane. But I thought it was pretty impressive given the stock blower and head (no port work, etc).

Had the baseline been as good as the previous time (which was 196whp, not 191whp as this graph shows), perhaps it could have seen a couple more hp, perhaps not.

the best run was actually a 204whp, but that graph wasn't used since it was more of a "spike" to 204, and didn't really count.

Any idea on what 200 rwhp on a MCS translates into in terms of acceleration times 0-60 and 1/4 mile?

Also, any ideas on how I might be able to get one without the wife finding out? :) I kid, but I am serious. Can you meet me and install it for cash? :devillook

Well it betters the power-weight ratio of a stock M3 and 944 Turbo and has really nice gearing so I don't see why a stock weight car with normal weight driver shouldn't be in the 13.8-14.1 second range at 98-100mph...depending on tires, weather, elevation, track and driver skill.

I'm thinking of replacing the Mini Cooper, with a John Cooper Works Mini. These cars are the most fun you can have without getting into modded bimmers.

Man, I don't know where all these numbers are coming from! We dyno'd 2 MCS' on Saturday and they sucked donkey balls.

We used a Dynojet that just came back from calibration and it was throwing low numbers all day. My 540 dyno'd at 243hp and 256 tq with Dinan software, CAI, exhaust. It seems about right based on 20% friction losses due to the auto. A stock S54 M Coupe pulled 256hp and that is using 17% loss on the stock 313hp motor.

Dyno Conditions were:
84 - 87 degrees
30" barometric pressure
1 foot above sea level
65 - 70% relative humidity
shop fan blowing into engine

153 whp - JCW MCS with header, Miltek exhaust and latest JCW upgrade
142 whp - M7 MCS w/ 19% pulley, Air Gain System, Throttle body, bigger intercooler and exhaust

There was also a TT350Z that pulled 430 whp that day.

Also, what effects on emissions will the pulleys have?

This is what I did. I bought it from Randy at webbmotorsports.com and installed it at my local mechanic shop. What's cool is Randy includes the pulley tool for free which makes the installation much easier. Here's the shop that I went to:
