View Full Version : Orange County Thanksgiving "The Food Drive" 11/18

Bugsy gave me the idea for this, so thanks to him. I want to organize a meet on Thursday, November 18th, a week before Thanksgiving, at the Tustin Market Place in front of the old Ikea at 6pm. But I don't want this to just be a meet, I want to have "Food Drive".

If everyone could please bring with them a couple cans of food to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank. it could really make a difference. 456,000 people in Orange County won't have enough food this month. As BMW owners and OC residents, I know this seems far-fetched. Unfortunately, food banks are unable to meet needs to feed these people. By donating just a little bit of extra food, you can make a family's thanksgiving this year. This will be a great way to give back to our community, and have some fun in the process. Canned food and non-parishable food (think mac and cheese) are the most needed. If you forget to bring your cans of food, monitary donations are also needed to buy food. Every 1 dollar of food buys about 12 dollars worth whole sale, so even a little makes a big difference.

After everyone arrives with the food (We will wait until 7) someone, I'm not sure who yet, maybe my dad, will bring the food to one of the food bank locations. I will talk to this person about staying late to make sure that stragglers have a chance to drop off their donations. At 7 we will leave on a drive, hence the name: the food drive. The drive will be a nice loop around OC. I’m thinking Jamboree to Santiago Canyon to El Toro, to Laguna Canyon, to PCH, and back up Jamboree. This will NOT be a canyon run! A calm cruise, anyone being an idiot will be asked to leave the group, no jokes.

Please, link this to other forums you are a part of as well, if we could get a good showing of people and a decent donation of food, it would be great.

Here is the address and a map of the Tustin Market Place:
2777 El Camino Real Tustin, CA 92782-8908

For more information on how to donate food and other needed items, or for ideas on what to bring, please viset: www.feedoc.com

About a 50 min drive for me each way. Won't have my V1 by then, so it will still be a long drive on a school night. We shall see...

Gary, maybe you and Aren could caravan down to the meet or something. I know it is traffic hell on week days, you would want to leave by 4:30 if you want to make it on time, so it is up to you.

Monitory donations are great as well. We are specifically looking for food, but if you happen to forget, yes, a donation of even a few dollars will be appreciated. I don't know if we will be able to work out the tax break with the donation, seeing that all donations will be dropped off by one person. If this bothers you, I'll make sure to have the address on hand so you can send them a check from home, and receive your tax break.

These are items most needed:

High-protein foods such as canned meat, tuna, beef stew, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, beans and lentils.

Staple dry goods such as rice, pastas and dry cereals.

Canned goods including fruit, juices, vegetables, soups and spaghetti sauce.

Baby food, formula and cereal. Diapers and other baby-care items are also appreciated.

To better serve homeless people, we need ready-to-eat items, individually-packed products, bottled water, small can openers, sunscreen and personal care items.

Personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, toilet tissue and deodorant, and feminine hygiene items.

SilverBeam

It doesn't look like this will be very big. Oh well, people just better bring a lot of cans! ;)

I did the drive today to see how long it would take and it if is possible. A news flash: The old Ikea is now a Best Buy, so we won't have a big empty parking lot. Shoot. But I'm sure there will be enough parking for a small group of people, so no worries. We will park towards the end of the lot, near the In N Out. So someone could grab a quick bite to eat in the hour we are waiting. WE WILL LEAVE PROMTLY AT 7! No slacking, and no waiting to get your double double until 6:55 and expecting us to wait for you to scarf it down.

The cruise is long, about 45 miles. SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GAS! We will be passing a Chevron right before Santiago Canyon (10 miles in) so if anyone needs gas, we can detour. But I don't want to, the logistics aren’t that great.

We will be passing every major freeway and toll road that runs through the area, so anyone who wants to leave early will be able to. There are a few good places for us to meet up if anyone gets left behind, which they might seeing that El Toro is being widened right now and its a little hard to get through.

The drive is staying pretty much the same, with only one small change to cut a couple miles off the cruise.

We are going to leave the center turning Left onto Jamboree. We travel about 10 miles down that then turn Right onto Santiago Canyon. Santiago canyon turns into El Toro which turns into the 133 we turn Left where that dead ends, and take that road to where it dead ends at PCH. We turn Right onto PCH, and drive that for another 10 miles. We are going to turn Right onto McArther and then Right onto Jamboree. From there, we take Jamboree down and back to the Market Place. If anyone has any questions let me know.

If anyone feels as though they need a map, I'll make some. And PLEASE bring your radio and your V1. I will be leading, but I do not have a V1. If we could have someone with a V1 near the front that would be super. And last but not least DON’T FORGET YOUR DONATIONS!

Sorry you didn't know Jon. I told Aren to tell the LA people.

We got a very nice donation! so thanks to everyone! I have yet to do a count, but we filled up my sister's trunk, the meet was a huge success! The showing was good, better than expected. We have WRXs and Lancer evolutions in droves. At least 40 cars, with a good showing of makes. I got to meet Heath finally and he's a good kid. The cruise didn't attract many people. It started with a lot of interest, then the Lancer guys decided they wanted to go to John Wayne, and the Scoobies decided to go to everywhere (those guys are savages with meets) so only the bimmer people went on the drive, but it was enjoyable. When we were leaving the parking lot (after announcing the drive for the countless time) we were getting a weird look from some of the people. We told them what was up, and as Aren started to drive away his car rolled a little and someone said, "Whoa its stick!" I looked at him with the most confused look on my face and said, "Of course." Apparently a lot of those guys don't know whats up with bimmers.

The next one will be next month, seeing that this one got such a great turn out WE NEED MORE BIMMERS! The subaru guys were afraid that it would look like one or two of them wondered into a BMW meet, instead it looked like a couple BMWs wondered into a subaru meet. It was funny, they didn't realize that BMWs had meets, one of the first guys there was very intrigued by this.

The drive is just a cruise, don't worry. If the STI and Evo guys want to go balls to the wall next time, they can do so without us. Those guys meet up so many times, they have so many different drives that they do, that they would take the inisutive (sp?) to go off alone rather than screw up our drive.
