View Full Version : E34 535i vs new 745Li
zmuff 11-08-2004, 04:06 PM I was enjoying a nice VA interstate cruise Sunday afternoon in fairly light traffic doing about 70. The left lane was open and I was passing most of the cars without any drama. I passed by a new 745Li that had what appeared to be 20" wheels with nice deep lips. My opinions of the new 7's (and 5's) have been changing and really I liked the look of this one. He dropped in behind me and stayed kind of close. My car is debadged but the license plate says V XXX V so he may have known what I was driving.
The right lane opened up after about a mile so I moved over expecting him to drop in behind me. But he pulled up beside me instead and just kind of paced for a while. I looked over and saw the passenger looking at me through the tinted windows with a big grin on his face. I figured since 70 mph is where my car does its best work, what the hell, I grabbed third gear and started to sprint. In just a few seconds I had a full car length on him. I thought I had him or maybe he wasn't really racing, I never heard his engine (only mine). But then he started pulling up on me till he was directly beside me. I'm in 4th gear pulling hard doing well over 100 and look over and there is that big grin on his face again. He raised his hand, waved, and they proceeded to walk away from me like I was driving a Yugo (no offense if you're a fan).
Well, I saw no need to try and chase down these guys so I grabbed fifth and humbly slowed back down to something a little less noticeable. I was kind of shocked as I watched that silver streak get smaller and smaller in the distance. I had an idea that a race with a new 7 would not work out too well in my favor, but my ass got stomped! Do they all run that good or did I come across a special beast made to humiliate unsuspecting victims? I can only imagine what that V-12 monster will do. Okay I got killed, but it was a fun death. I can still race Yugos!
accel junky 11-08-2004, 04:24 PM Nice death! Good detailled story. :cool
mihalis 11-08-2004, 04:48 PM That sucks, I didn't think the 745's were that fast, I guess you are I are both mistaken!!! Still a fun race though... :)
Whoa...
Maybe its ugliness made you let off a bit? :dunno
rundatrack 11-08-2004, 05:08 PM get the kit from www.turbochargingdyamics.com....
then go 7 killing :evil2
e34m535t 11-08-2004, 09:15 PM Bmw says the new 745i's do 0-60 in Under 6 seconds, so there one freaking Fast 4000lbs+ car!
dinan325i 11-08-2004, 10:37 PM Yeah and here the 0-60 didnt even matter. You guys were going 70 when you hit it and hes got a massive V-12. So hes got some power I would think at those speeds.

Nice job on those style 32 wheels, looks good with the charcoal color.
That must have been quite a task to mask off!
sexy325 11-08-2004, 11:17 PM i bet they had 7 girls in the back, too... AND another one in the trunk
zmuff 11-09-2004, 09:53 AM I've gotten over the shock of my ugly interstate death and I've started looking at what made that car so fast. Factory or killer mods? I can't really find a whole lot of stuff out there for e65 upgrades. But... if you live in the Washington DC area (I did see his plate before it got too small), watch out for a new 7er that likes to go fast and looks a whole lot like this one.

Cacafish, thanks for the wheels comment. Yes indeed, a serious PITA job but the end result was worth it.
Dwayne 11-09-2004, 10:02 AM Maybe he had a red button like the car in Men In Black.
Big hp and big torque on the highway does make a car fast.
funkmasta 11-09-2004, 11:52 AM I drove one, and they are fast as sh!t... For its size, it is unbelievable.
jimmyz2 11-09-2004, 11:59 AM Zmuff did you check to see if your 'BavAuto Window Stickers' are still on? :D
stingraysvc270 11-09-2004, 12:16 PM The 745 is verry happy on the highway. it will run with a lot of cars at those speeds. I have had the 760 out as well. As you can imagine, that is also very fast. I had the car up to 120 and you dont even notice it.

Just like my 8 the 760/740 are very smooth on the higway at high speeds, thats what they were made for. THey are Autobhan cars.

How do you like that car...I heard that the 8 will put ya mechanics kids through college... :confused
jeebus 11-09-2004, 03:51 PM Maybe it was a 760 badged as a 745 for kicks. :devillook
What kind of power does an 89 535i have? Would a 745Li kill my M3 too? I always figured that the added weight of such a machine wouldn't allow it to outpull my car, despite its 85HP advantage.

LMAO!!!! well I think it is just as much as any other BMW only thing is that you have 12plugs instead of 4 or 6. and also 12 wires, 2 air filters,2 batterys and so forth. but as long as you maintain it correctly and find a great mechanic that you trust you will be fine. when I use to take my car to the "stealers" (dealer) there eyes use to light up with $$ signs, so now I just take it a local place that works on lambos and ferrari and I trust him and he wont jerk me around...all in all I wouldn't trade it for any other bimmer out there today. well only for a 6 speed since mine is an auto.
tmachine 11-09-2004, 04:49 PM I went WOT from 70 to 100 in a 2004 745 and thought it was pretty uneventful. It reached 100 pretty quick, but it certanly didn't push you back in your seat.

the car is so smooth it is deceptive. You dont realize how fast the car is taking off.

I'm not an expert on the new 7s, but that may be the case. I assumed it had some kind of active suspension or something. The car seemed confused when doing a slight right hand turn on the freeway. It felt like the left rear wheel was hopping up and down. Maybe bugs in the new system. It is an impressive car, but I was glad to get mine back.
Mblaster 11-09-2004, 06:53 PM Sometimes theres just no substitute for cubic centimeters...
Nice Death. :D
bähnstormer 11-09-2004, 09:12 PM 535i is a slow ass pig!
3500 pounds and MAYBE 190 wheel hp
obvious total kill - its just lame that they
picked on you hehehe =]

they really arent but excelerate pretty nicely from highway speeds

no way it could hang a little with and m3 but not much really, still would be pretty bad. i raced my friends e500 and he dusted me time after time. the car would be a lot faster if it just shifted faster. it gets to revs limit then takes a nap before shifting to the next gear. pissed me off so bad i refuse to race anyone in int anymore
tmachine 11-10-2004, 03:36 PM It was a joke, actually. I guess you've never watched Star Trek much :)
Got me. :) I thought you were talking about anti-roll suspension which I think it has. The whole car seemed a little like star trek compared to normal cars. Funky key, fingertip controls for shifting and signals, no parking brake or park for that matter. You put it into reverse and press the park button instead. And it had this big knob on the center console that seemed to control warp drive or something. My wife tried to show me what it did, but I never figuered it out. :D
eXpLiCiT 12-27-2004, 11:35 PM I let my brother borrow my car to pickup a relative from SF airport and on his way their he said he raced a new 745. They started at about 70mph my brother kept in 4th and took it to redline. They stayed pretty even and once he shifted into 5th he started walking him pretty good. My car isn't stock tho.
Breakerbacker 12-29-2004, 08:16 AM I am gonna bet the only stock E34's you would want to run a new 745i or 545i in would probably be a 93-95 Euro M5 with the 3.8, or if your real lucky, one of those Alpina Bi-Turbo's. Bet either of these cars would get it done at highway speed, especially the Alpina. :ninja I'll keep an eye open in hopes I can catch one of those new cars in the Touring, it sure will be nice to look in the rear view and see the jaws drop. :redspot
