Getting worried with all these Oil Pump Nut failures. Any suggestions for shops in SD that know how to take care of this issue? Thanks.

I actually don't have the best experience with Apex, but I may give them another try if nothing else surfaces. Have any idea what this is going to run? $300-$400?

I'm hearing it should cost around $200 if done at a shop, but thats just here say...

Jay, if you are a DIY'er, I'd be glad to lend a hand. I have two under my belt.

Steve,

That sounds terrific...I wanted to attempt it...but felt that I needed a little more guidance than the write-ups I have read. PM sent. TIA.

Good Morning,

Well, I have good news for the San Diego BMW community, I have had a great experience with an independent shop called Apex Engineering just off Clariemont Mesa BLVD and the 163.

I have always wondered why BMW does not have an oil cooler for the US spec M3 and why kits are so hard to find, so I put together one of my own and finally found a shop that could do the custom work justice.

Ben and his team at Apex Engineering may have taken their time but they certainly exceeded my expectations. I will have a full tech write up next week with pictures, but if you have ever wanted a great oil cooler for your M3 or E36, I highly recommend them.

PM me if you want more details or can not wait for the official tech write up with pictures!

I acutally think Jared and I are going to tackle this ourselves, and I've heard mixed things about Apex.

LOL...that was me. A good buddy of mine used to live on easter...I was there often and usually parked on the street. But yea defeinitely swing by...I live off of sorrento valley road now w/ my own garage so I got space. I pretty much have most of the necessary tools but may need an extra pair of jack stands.

O yea, what kinda beers do you guys prefer? :D

Jared, you only need the front jacked up for this.

How so, I thought the engine had to be raised for clearance to remove the pan?
This is counter to everything I've read on the subject and would love to know how since I would be alone doing the work.

Negative, only reason Chad jacked the back up on his was because he was rotating his tires. Um, no you don't even have to raise the engine if you unbolt the two large bolts holding the control arms, removing the subframe easily allows enough room to remove the pan.

How much effort required to get those CA bolts back in place?
Can one person do it easily?

slcook54
11-13-2004, 09:51 PM
Not really, because simultaneously you will have to line up the steering alignment which isn't easy. Subframe isn't exactly easy to lift up either. The control bolts are relatively easy to get back in, but since the control arm moves it will yank the steering alignment thing out of place making it pretty challenging to line up properly.

Guess I will do it the traditional way then, thanks.
