I am convinced that with my sound system phase, i sucked the alternator for all it was worth.

The volt meter on my Passport reads only 10.5 volts at night with the lights on :eyecrazy

I put the passport in my van to see what it would read and it gets 12+ . 13 even after a long drive on the freeway.

Time to replace the alternator! While it's out, it's time to upgrade. What brands/sizes will fit, and any recomendations on ones that have worked well for you are appreciated.

Thanks!

Here are some hints. (http://e21.tricord.cjb.net/forum/view.php?view=8084&highlight=Alternator)

I think Bosch do an 80Amp that will fit.

I have a 90Amp Bosch and my volt meter read 14.1V when cold. 13.5V when engine is warmed up. (Heat increases electrical resistance). The alternator came off a Mercedes Benz and required minor mods to the bracket.

Here, more is more.

Better voltage - better current - better power.

Matt, CJ had a question about this on another thread. You can use the alternator from an e30 318i or one from a 325/M3 wich might be the same as the 318i, but you need to use the E30 mounting braket too, sdince the alternator is a little bigger but still lines up with the crank pulley. I think the E30 alternator is 75amps and uses the same connections as the E21. check www.2002faq.com on the electrical section for the how-to.

You can reuse the e21 front case and pulley to eliminate the need to change mounting.

You can find Bosch alternators up to 140 amps and swap in the rotor, stator, and aft case.

I now have a 90 amp in my e21.
