Ive just bought a 1990 E32 730i SE Auto with 171,000 on the clock

on the way home on the motorway it started to violently shake at about 50mph i thought oh dear what have i bought its gonna cost me a fortune, anyways it did this for about 30 secs to a minute then just stopped and drove perfectly just as it did when I test drove it ?

anyone any ideas why it would do this ? it was really violent and has put me off using it on the motorway

Apart from the once it hasnt done it again and ive been down a few dual caridgewas to 80mph or so

But then ive only had it a week and covered 150 miles in it

any ideas commens suggestions welcome !

1.check your wheel nuts to make sure they are tight.
2.they may be out of balance.
3.the front end suspension parts need to be replaced. With the 171k if it is in miles you are due for the suspension work.

Control arms, tie rods, bushings, center link, etc. All the guts of the front suspension. On my E32, I did the front end at 130k. Cost me about $1200. I too had bad shakes at about 50 mph every now and then. Also did it when applying the brakes at high speeds when coming off the highway.

Consider doing the front end money well spent. Your car will feel tight and new.

Good luck. You may not have to do everything as all may not be worn out, but do the things that makes sense to do while it is apart.
