View Full Version : Violent Front Wheel Vibrations@65mph during curves
Junior525i 10-27-2004, 06:37 PM Violent Front Wheel Vibrations at 65mph during curves,
When im turning on curves on the freeway, my front wheels will vibrate and the steering wheel will giggle violently until i slow down or speed up faster than 70 mph, pretty much the entire front of my car will shake from this vibration.
Any Reason WHY?
Im thinking my front shocks need to be replaces. Drivers Front shock bottoms out sometimes and i think fluid shot out of it, BUT IS THAT THE REASON FOR THE VIOLENT SHAKING????
The Beastmaster 10-27-2004, 08:36 PM Check your upper and lower control arm bushings while you're at it.

Sine you were so nice to us...
I'll tell you later
Gunslinger 10-28-2004, 05:19 PM I gas up my own cars.
I do my own suspension work, too.
I'll post up again after marinakorp does.
:confused

Hmmmm..... I have a couple of possible ideas as to what may be causing this vibration. I'll need some more info to diagnose the problem though.
What color is the car?
Is the radio on or off when the vibration occurs?
Do you talk dirty to the car to turn it on, or do you just stick in your key?

19bmw 10-29-2004, 10:07 AM My e34 had the exact same symptoms. It turned out to be the center link and tie rods. I replace them all and still have a small vibration. I believe it is the tires now. The bad tie rods probably ruined the tires. The previous owner drove it for a long time with bad tie rods.
marinakorp 10-29-2004, 01:28 PM could be a number of things
1 - Tie rod ends should be aparent even before dipping it in to the turns... will tend to wander around a bit (similar to tramling... feels like a gust of wind came along and pushed the car a few inches back and forth)
2 - since you have issues with the shocks and bottom them out... I would replace them ASAP. THis COULD be the cause of the shaking...especially when dipping in to a turn.
3 - of course it could be a myriad of other suspension components (bushings, etc... but more likely caused by the shock being worn
Good luck with your issues, report back if the shocks do not fix the issue... replace BOTH of them at the same time! If one is bad... pretty good chance that BOTH are bad
Junior525i 10-29-2004, 01:48 PM Its Just That Most The Time I Ask For Help From This Board, I Never Get It, I Just Started To Figure That Most The People Here Only Know How To Preform The 17 Inch Rim Conversion, But I Guess Not, Thanks For The Possible 15 Reasons That Could Be The Problem. I Took Her To South Bay Beemer And They Said Its The Shocks.
MaloventEvil 10-29-2004, 02:28 PM um.... that may be A problem but it isnt THE problem.... blown shocks shouldnt cause vibrations like that.
Gunslinger 10-29-2004, 03:03 PM No problem. This isn't always the most active forum.
Anyway, a couple of thoughts -
I would generally first suspect upper control arms, but you described the shaking as occurring during both acceleration and braking, and I usually associate the UCA bushing wear with shudder under light braking..
The shocks certainly contribute. If you have fluid on the outside, the strut insert is beyond shot, and most certainly needs replaced.
If the strut inserts alone are a complete fix, great. If not, look at control arm bushings, centerlink, inner and outer tie rod ends, and wheel bearings. Check wheel balance as well. Alignment is not generally an issue, as the toe is the only adjustment.
The good news is that parts are fairly available, not too expensive, and http://www.bmwe34.net and the Bentley manual are both good resources.
Good luck.
MaloventEvil 10-29-2004, 07:52 PM gunslinger hit that one on the button.
