I've been given the task to research another track car and thought it might be cheaper to buy someone else's used track/race car than to modify one myself.

I've looked at the BMWCCA club race for sale list. There were a couple of nice MCoupes on there.

Can anyone recommend any other places to look?

We might be interested in open wheel cars or cars that fall into a SPEC class.

Our Spec E30 is for sale. 10 races, 9 wins, no DNFs. Not an open wheel Spec car, but still an exceptionally fun and challenging series. Carter Hunt, the series admin just upgraded to the SO spec (325i), and he's very fast and a very good driver (he's here on BFC, too). You'll also have Daniel Herrington to contend with.

We could also petition to have the Spec E30 classed in K Stock. There are a couple of big differences between the two, but BMW CR allows other class cars to run provided they meet the rules of one class only (can't mix and match rules/parts/modifications).

Otherwise check Sportscar Mag (comes with your SCCA membership) or places like http://www.improved-touring.com.

Buying a used racecar is a big risk as well. Some people don't mention, cover up, or forget about quirks or problems with their cars, and you inherit them. The maintenance schedule should be documented and turned over to you with the logbook, and a "build sheet" of all the parts installed on the car should be included as well. You also want to make sure the car meets the rules, so you don't get any protests/surprises.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm not sure if next years budget will allow us to make any purchases, but I wanted to get an idea of where to look.

The most recent issue of Grassroots Motorsports mag has an article on buying used racecars; it might be helpful.
