Here's one for you - I'm looking for the best possible solution to this. My 95 e38 740i's CD changer in the trunk is no longer working but I don't want to simply replace it. I'd rather find a simple, in-dash CD player only (wouldn't need the tuner since I'd leave the factory intact), and put it in dash where the currently useless cassette player is. Only thing is that I would lose the equalizer / fader / balance on the cassette player that controls all the audio, and would need some way to have those controls as well.

Anyone ever heard of a solution like this? If so, please share.

What kind of head unit do you have at the moment? Sounds like you have the split tape and MID unit. If this is the case, you can simply buy a CD unit to replace your tape unit - there will be a tone button on this and when you press it, the MID will display your tone settings. You then use the buttons on the MID to adjust. As far as I know, the tape and CD units are fully interchangeable - as long as you have the MID unit to begin with.
