Man,
What a GREAT time. I am SOOO happy that everyone who attended, did. We had a great group!!! It couldn't have been better.
Sat. was a little sketchy. Good weather...rain....good weather again...then rain....good weather again. All in all it made for a good experience. I think we all were able to get a chance to drive in the rain. It was a good experience for me....even after the drift in turn 3 that I was able to catch
Justin, it was cool finally meeting you and your GF. Good times. Your GF is cool, too.
Sunir, thanks for the lessons. You really helped me out. I feel more confident driving the course now. It was fun hanging out as well. Looked like you were having some fun driving your car, as well as Nick's E46 M3 (RICH!!!)
Jeddy, thanks for the cheerleading. Next time, bring your pom poms. J/K :D
Hope you had fun riding with me.....even after that mishape where my brakes faded and I went into the grass.  I wish I started screaming just to see your reaction.....but I was a little occupied trying to figure out how to not make the situation any worse. :laugh
Jeff, thanks for taking me for a ride in your E30 M3. Your car was even better than I imagined. I am sure you want more...go.....but the car handles very well. Besides, it's more fun being faster than people in the twisties anyway...right? As you proved that many times.
Jesse, thanks for the ride alongs. You have proven to me that I don't have the kahunas to be a fast driver. I think that will hold me back from advancing....but I am happy with the driving level I am currently at anyway. :) Great driving!!! I think you have come along way....and should continue to get better. You were impressive in the Intermediate Group. That's a pretty impressive feat right there.
Bud and Austin, wish you guys could've stayed longer. Good luck with the car. Same with you Mark.
Mikey, thanks for coming out both days. I was looking for you today to have you ride along with me but I couldn't find you. As I was heading to the grid, that is when I saw you (the time you acted like you were going to run into me with your car.)
I hope you had fun on the touring lap. You really didn't drive my car hard enough...it's a Honda.....no bottomend torque...remember :rolleyes :stickoutt
All in all, I had a GREAT time!! Can't wait to do it again. :redspot :)
essejM3 10-17-2004, 08:20 PM Jesse, thanks for the ride alongs. You have proven to me that I don't have the kahunas to be a fast driver. I had a blast :buttrock Definitely the best DE I've been to yet. The kahunas will happen in time Andy, don't worry you drove great. Thanks for riding along, the conversation is fun when I'm driving. I already looked at the tape (I could have saved it). I really need to work on my brake situation, I feel it is really limiting me.
It was great to see/meet everyone. I can't wait to get back on track already, it really is like crack

Yeah, I don't think it gets any better than this event. VERY well organized, great food, PLENTY of drinks, and classroom time. The ONLY thing I think that is lacking would be the skidpad time. That is a good experience. Other than that, it is AWESOME!!!
I think this event proved to me again that a car is not fast....it all comes down to the driver. Just because you have a fast, well balanced car, it does not mean you will automatically be fast. This is the aspect that makes it so fun. When you are able to keep up with cars that are "supposed to be faster". :alright

I agree Andy about the driver being fast thing, not that most of these faster cars were taking part in our imaginary "races". They put on a great event, and were awesome enthusiasts as well. I saw some guys coming over Sat. looking under Greg's hood, like they were looking for a turbo or something in that little car that passed their Ferrari.
Lance325is 10-17-2004, 09:01 PM I really enjoyed the event and it was also nice to see everyone again. Too bad the rear wheel bearing went bad, but you cant always expect to go out everytime and not have something break. Also I would like to thank James again for allowing me to take his car out. It really ended the day on a better note and gave me an idea as to how the track was layed out. Thanks again James!
nick325xit 5spd 10-17-2004, 09:14 PM Well.
Brake failure sure sucksass.
Yes it does.
Well.
Brake failure sure sucksass.
Yes it does.
Yeah, Nick, it does. I didn't want to mention it until you did. Good luck with the car. :( I am just glad you didn't go 5 yards further in the gravel pit.
:)
That was better than any FATT or CCA school I've been too....
Lotsa track time, and free food !! I think we're just going to have to make that the required event we all attend...like an annual tradition (or bi-annual)
Good meeting lots of people I hadn't met !!
I'm glad to see Nick made it home okay with no brakes...I bet he was braking to the right pretty hard on the way home...
Did you guys see the friggin traffic ????????????
Jeff
gsober 10-17-2004, 09:58 PM I saw some guys coming over Sat. looking under Greg's hood, like they were looking for a turbo or something in that little car that passed their Ferrari.
i cant help that i got me some skilzzzzzz
By the way I meant to ask Nick
Did you pee in your pants when you saw that wall heading at you ???
I know when Jed and I went around we were like "thats f*cking close to the wall !!!!!!"
Jeff
PS I know we're on this topic on two threads.
Mikey52 10-17-2004, 10:33 PM Well, i had another great time today, the weather today rocked! I will definitely sign up for the next one of these! :buttrock Too bad I got stuck in 3 seperate traffic jams on the way home. :rolleyes Ill start a new thread for pics.
Thanks again Andy for letting me drive your car, I had fun even if it was a Honda. :stickoutt
Teuton 10-17-2004, 11:36 PM Today was a blast!
I wasn't going to come because I wanted to pack and get ready for my trip. It's now 11:24 and I'm still doing laundry before I pack and head downt to Texas tomorrow.
At any rate, I'm glad I did come out. It was great to see everyone again. Big thanks to James and Sean for letting me get a ride. It was so much fun that I'm at a loss for words. I can't wait to go out and do my first DE.
Nick, I'm sorry about what happened but I'm glad that your ok. I think I now want a ZO6. :devillook
Bud and Austin, I saw you guys on the way out as I was just getting to Summit point. I'm sorry to hear about your wheel bearing.
Pete
Beavis 10-17-2004, 11:48 PM This was a great event, Im glad I made the 700 mile round trip, getting 130 miles of track time and free lunch was well worth it :redspot
Thanks to Jesse and Bekky for the accomadations, You've got a place to stay in NY if you want to go to Lime rock.
Thanks to Sunir for the oil cap, it's nice to be able to drive home. PM or Email me, I have a new cap and a thank you gift to send you.
It was nice to meet the rest of you and good driving with you, every one was so curtious on the track.
FMOW sure puts on a nice DE.
Andy, Jesse, Jeff, and Sean (even though he doesn't post here)-
Thanks for letting me drive. It would've been fun to have run, but I enjoyed coming along with you guys just as much. It's always great to see how someone else takes the lines (everyone for the most part was the same-some differences coming into/out of T5 into the carousel) and see people's braking points.
I had a great time with each of you out there!
Andy-you got so fast towards the end man. You really should've been in blue group. That was funny in the car when you would pass a Ferrari... "VVVTTTTEEEECCCC!!!!" :laugh For someone with no "cojones" you were pretty good.
Jesse-It was fun riding with you and some of the comments like with the AMG that pointed you by. "C'mon fcuker!!!! Let up on the gas! I don't have your horsepower!!!!"
Jeff-that E30 M3 is AWESOME! Once it's on the cam, it's got decent power for a 4 banger. That thing is so tossable. Makes me miss my E30's chassis.
And yes, the "My Other Car is Also Gay" decal made it from the autox to the track. It was on Jesse's car for the first blue session (without his knowledge)-as Sean and I ran up on Jesse-we had a good look at it before we were pointed by. We were both laughing. :laugh

Yeah, it was fun riding with people to see how they take the turns, and their driving style.
Jed, that tip on taking turn 5 was AWESOME!!! I would make up some ground in that turn doing it the way you suggested. :alright
Oh, remember going into turn 1 when I would tell you that I would hit a bump and say, "Damn, that is violent"?? Well, it turned out to be a larger bump since I was taking that turn a little wider. I decided to take the turn a little closer to the apex and it wouldn't jar the car as hard. However, the wider angle on that turn is the better driving line. :az
I think I am going to upgrade the pads on my car, have the engine tuned more (I think it can still make more power), and flush out the tranny oil and brake fluid. Besides these items, I was VERY pleased with how my car drove.
I think I have a better idea of how to rebuild the 240, too. Can't wait to get that thing out there. :buttrock
Andy-......That was funny in the car when you would pass a Ferrari... "VVVTTTTEEEECCCC!!!!"........ :laugh
Hey, I couldn't resist. :laugh

Dude, I remember approaching the carousel, you were like 1-2 carlengths behind that black 512 Testarossa and all of a sudden, you were coming in on the inside. Had that been an actual race, you would've taken him! I actually thought you were going to take him on the inside! You were coming in so fast and that dude was so off the line. :buttrock
Same thing happened with that 996 Turbo "Hello Mr. Turbo, I'm back!!!" and a 328GTS.
But yeah, it is great to learn from each other. When I went with you on a touring lap back in July for PCA, you really taught me a good line thru 3 and 4 and into the chute. That really helped me out on my last session. My instructor was like "Whoa! Nice line!" and I definitely got faster that session.
I definitely learned something from each of you that I rode with.
Yeah, totally!!
I want to ride with you one time to see your lines and how your car handles.
I think I am going to start looking into a rollcage. I think when I get one, I will be more willing to drive harder. Needless to say, I don't want to get hurt in an accident either. It's all about being safe and having fun. :buttrock
jterp 10-18-2004, 10:23 AM Wish I would have come back sunday -- great weather, huh?
I hada blast though -- the car was running really well -- better than i thought it would, actually. The one time I stopped to get some space in the lineup I had a clear track from the starting point to turn one -- I got on it and hit 120 mph before i had to brake for turn 1 -- scared molly half to death. :D
Andy -- that point by was charity. :D We all know who was the first one to cross the finish line.
Yeah, totally!!

Yeah, when I jumped into Sean's and Jesse's car, I was thinking, man, THAT is really a good idea. Especially after Nick's incident. Thank God he wasn't hurt. I mean you see cars go off, and while it sucks, it doesn't hit you as hard when you see one of your friends actually go off. Good thing he went off in a straight line.
It's not like we are club racers but that extra measure is a good idea for someone who is going to keep doing them-because you will get faster with each DE and taking on more risk.
What do you mean? You went for a ride with me on the TOURING lap! AHHHHHHHHHH! That would've funny if I got red misted and passed the pace car and opened up on the other cars: "Hey James, thanks for letting me use your car. By the way-you just got kicked out of the event."
Speaking of borrowing cars. Sunir, what's up man???? You dissed me when you didn't let me take your car out on the track! I gave you a cig!!! That's messed up man! When I said "hook me up" I meant the keys to your car. :stickoutt
What about the STi that was blowing flames out of his exhaust. Sean got up pretty close to him at one point when he was blowing out flame. I was thinking "man, I don't think that's a good idea since he could melt his front end!"

Was he supposed to be blowing flames? (Like an old hot rod?) Or was there something wrong with his car?
Justin, I wish you and Molly came out yesterday. It was A LOT of fun. You both would've had a good time. :dunno GREAT weather too!!
Was he supposed to be blowing flames? (Like an old hot rod?) Or was there something wrong with his car?
I don't think his car was running right. It would puff out black smoke, other times it would have a flame coming out of the back end, and other times white smoke would puff out.
I never saw him run again after the first session. :dunno
sunir 10-18-2004, 11:01 AM Nice to see some 'ole friends again and meet some of the folks from bimmerforums like Jesse, Greg, Bud/Austin, Justin (Terp), Corry (Beavis), Nick, Sean etc ...I had a really good time, very relaxing weekend and we got some good data on the racecar...we now know a few changes we'd like to be able to make.
Thanks to Jeddy n' da boyzzz for keeping things fun and coming out & hangin', good seein' you guys again...been a while...I think Alfa Eric and Pete will try DE's next year from what Pete told me...
Big thanks to Nick for letting me drive his SMG E46M3, that car is not only very fast, but even at 6 or 7/10ths it gives good feedback (and responsive) ...a fun car that is very easy to drive fast. Sorry 'bout what happened in the last session, never looked at your rear pads, but in all honesty the fronts looked like they had at least another half hour in 'em...upgrade to Hawk 9012, HT10 or HT14 and this won't happen again, but you gotta keep an eye on the pad wear, we generally go over the entire car after each qualifying before each race.
Jesse, get that car ready for IP or GTS Challenge and come out n' play :D :)
Terp, nice to see someone rockin' the ole cobra...those cars are a blast to drive, a throwback to the way purpose built streetcars were made under homologation rules so that a small volume manufacturer named Shelby could go racing!!
Andy, glad I could help 'ya out this weekend, you've come a long way and I think you'll continue to get better as a driver with more seat time...now you've just gotta get Jeddy, Pete, Alfa Eric on track so you all can battle it out team BAR style, right? :D ;) :alright
Sean and Mark Rebano had some fast Z06's...deffinately the best bang for the buck in production sports cars...very fast, reliable, and can handle and brake very effectively. I drove a SCCA Pro Racing (I think that's what the owner was going to class it in) Z06 at VIR last year and the car was absolutley amazing, gobs of torque and tons of grip...
Corry (Beavis), you're more than welcome for the oil cap, glad you were able to make it home safely, helping others is a big part of what the track culture and this sport is all about. :)
Bud/Austin...that car of yours is just plain FAST! Brandt did a nice job on that motor...looks like I'll need to place a few calls over the winter :devillook ...oh who am I kidding, I'm literally broke after 13 races this season :( ! Tough brake on that wheel bearing, I literally thought the car was ready to fall apart out there!
James, sweet E46M3...I was watching you during an afternoon session after lunch...looked good out there...you're gettin' so much faster...good job man, keep up the good work!
Jeff, that E30 M3 is the perfect car for JS racing...in fact you wouldn't need to mod it that much for stock class to make it competitive and come out and play :devillook ...and you'd have a blast in that car!!!
Again, FMoW throws what is arguably one of the BEST DE's in our area...I think they are an awsome bunch of people and I'm glad I could be a part of it again.

Sunir, if you know of any other DE's that are comparable to the FMoW DE, let me know. I am VERY interested. I have yet to find one as good as this past weekend's event.
I am actually tempted to do the Ferrari DE at another track, if their other regional chapters are comparable to the Washington group. It is that good. :redspot
Actually, I thought the MB Club held a very good DE too. Very well organized, good classroom sessions, hot catered food (with real silverware-RICH!), good instructors. I really wanted that dude Klaus to be my instructor the time I went there.
One of the best instructors I had was at a DE with that club.
I didn't participate, but you are right though, you really do get your money's worth. 5 sessions that moved well, very safe and not that expensive.
This is one I want to do, along with the Shattenbaum PCA's DE and MB.
OH YEAH!! You mentioned the MB Club DE before. I think I am going to look into that one next year.
NoSoup4U 10-18-2004, 11:54 AM I had a great time with you guys yesterday. BMW's were seriously representing there!!! Sean was arguably the fastest driver and should have been in the red group instead of picking on us! :( :cool His car is just sick. He walked me like I hit the brakes.
Nick's car -- man, he's got that pretty well-sorted out. Looks like both of us need brake pads
Andy -- damn, to bad you didn't hear me honk the horn. I LAID on the horn the entire time when I went by you :stickoutt :D
Jesse -- holy crap, you are a damn good driver. I could not shake you at all. We'll see if that happens with r-comps :devillook :evil2 ... Seriously, you are a great smooth driver. :alright I loved following you at the end.
I was glad to give Eric and Pete rides. Hopefully, they liked it. Nothing like Sean's car. I was actually able to show Pete some of my drift skillzzzz through the carousel. Got the car ... following Jesse ... to do a nice 30 degree slide to one side and then to the other side
That GT-350 was sick ... he would point me by out of turn 10 ... but, then he floored it and started walking. Pete heard me cussing saying, "What the FCUK!!!!!" ...
Andy -- you looked good out there. VTEC dat shyt!
It was great being out there with a bunch of enthusiasts. Autocross the previous day ... and then track. Can't ask for a much better weekend!
No one found my side grill ... one thing ... BMW's like to fall apart it seems :(
No one found my side grill
Oh. Actually we ran over it in the carousel in Andy's car. Sorry man. :(
We'll see if that happens with r-comps
Yeah, that's one thing I'd like to do for next year-run RA1s at the track. After riding with Jesse, Jeff and Sean-all with RA1s, it's not as intimidating as I thought. Very communicative, it seemed like. I guess it depends on what kind of R Comp you run. I'd imagine some of the stiffer walled ones like the Hoosier R3S04s would be less forgiving.
Oh. Actually we ran over it in the carousel in Andy's car. Sorry man. :(
:laugh
No, James, I did not steal it so that I can have it molded into my driver's side fender. :rolleyes
*Note to self: Don't let James look at my driver's side of the car for now on.* :devillook
:D
No, I didn't hear you honk as you went by. I was too busy letting groups of 3 cars pass me at a time. :laugh
Corry (Beavis) came FLYING up on me into turn one when I just got back out on the course. I took turn 1 too fast....almost went off course....I let him by...then I took turn 3 too fast because the guy behind me was right on me. :laugh
James, I don't think I was ready to be put in a group with advanced drivers just yet. :D
Here's a pic of Andy after a hard day of RACING!
Here's a pic of Andy after a hard day of RACING!
Hey, what can I say. RACING is not as easy as it looks. It drains even the best of us. :D
I wish the interns were still here so I could show them this pic. :(
:lol
That was funny when Sean, Mark and Nick pulled up and I asked Sean how it went on Saturday and he was like "man, FCUK autox!!!!"

Sean was FAST!!! Honestly, I don't think I could've rode with him. I would've been too scared.
He passed a Challenge car!!
yeah the toyos ra1s definitely make a big difference...
essejM3 10-18-2004, 02:00 PM James,
It was awesome driving w/you, get some R-comps. If you have R-comps and I have brakes that actually work we should have a blast going at it around the track again. I think you made the right decision not going out that last session and chancing it. I took a few too many chances and luckilly came out OK.
A recap of my last session:
Me: Dude 95 through the shoot!
Andy: That was scary!
Me: You want me to slow down?
Andy: Hell no!
Next lap:
Me: 100 mph through the shoot!
Andy: That felt a lot smoother actually.
Next lap:
Me: I'm getting this fcuking C4!
After I pass him and go OT in T1 due to NO brakes left:
Me: I think I am going to call it a day.
Andy: I think that would be a GREAT idea!
P.S. Andy that side grill looks awesome on your car, just gotta get that other one to mysteriously fall off the yellow M3 :dunno

Jesse, you just reminded me of something!! James, since you can only buy the side vents in pairs, would you mind if I took the one off of your passenger side off of your hands?? You won't have any use for it anyway. :devillook
:D
nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 02:12 PM Yeah, I hit 115 in the 'chute. That was fun, but not something I think I'm going to do regularly (even if there was actually a fair bit of margin left). The fastest entry speed I was ready to handle was 100MPH. More than that would take more balls that I had in that car. But, dude, my car could go WOT all the way from turn 3 down to the braking zone for turn 5 if I had the courage. :jawdrop:
In retrospect, it was probably the lack of traffic that session that killed my brakes. I was going REALLY fast around the track lap after lap, without the cool down laps that I'd get in traffic. I was apparently timed at a 1:31 early on in the day, when I was stuck behind a Porsche Turbo, was going 5MPH slower on the main straight, hadn't figured out the 'chute, wasn't rotating the car properly in the carousel, and was late on turn in for turn 9.
Nick,
How old (# of miles/track events??) were your brake pads before you brought your car to the event?? I couldn't believe how worn down the front left pads was. The rear left pad was pretty much gone too.
nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 02:17 PM Sunir -- believe it or not, I was on Hawk HT10s!

Yeah Nick that sucks that your brakes went and what followed afterwards happened. At least you didn't get hurt though. I think if I would have continued w/those crappy brakes I probably would have ended up next to you. I got to about 103 in the shoot the last time. I think I had plenty more adhesion to go w/my tires, but my problem was stopping in the next turn. I was using every last ounce of braking power to stop at those speeds. Any faster I think would have been using the Jed Carmona line through the carousel (ie: straight across the grass). Good luck getting it back together, you live and you learn.
Sunir -- believe it or not, I was on Hawk HT10s!
I thought you said you had Ultimates on. Or was that on the rear?
nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 02:22 PM Yeah Nick that sucks that your brakes went and what followed afterwards happened. At least you didn't get hurt though. Heck yes. Braking was always the problem for turn 4... What was so scary, though, was just how much the exact right line affected the amount of time you had to brake. My braking zone for turn 4 was nearly twice as long as nearly every other car's simply because I turned in a LOT earlier. At those speeds, a late turn in would have been really bad, but it seemed as if it was actually BETTER to end up (very slgihtly) early in 4--since you aren't maxing out your grip in the turn, it gives you a little margin on the brakes.
But that's just in my car, which is pretty freaking well sorted out. I sure as hell wouldn't dare do that on a stock suspension
Any faster I think would have been using the Jed Carmona line through the carousel (ie: straight across the grass).
Hey, I've never went off on Summit Point. (knock on wood).
If you ride with me, maybe we can see if we can! Test that line out for sure! :devillook
"Hang on Jesse!"
"WTF!!!!!"
nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 02:24 PM I thought you said you had Ultimates on. Or was that on the rear?
HT10s up front, Ultimates in the rear. I had HT10s in the rear at one point, but that made the car brake like a Porsche. VERY unpleasant. I'm waffling between a BBK and an HT14/HT10 combo. If I stay with the stock brakes, I will add SS brake lines and ducts.
Axxis Ultimates would have lasted three laps up front the way I was driving.
Sean was FAST!!! Honestly, I don't think I could've rode with him. I would've been too scared.
He passed a Challenge car!!
At some points, after his tires warmed up and he started getting, I was like OH SHYT! He's pretty smooth -he rolled off and on the throttle smoothly and had good steering input, so it wasn't as scary as you think.
But when he was passing, damn, he opened up a can of whoop azz.
That car is vicious, braking and handling wise. (obviously in power too) He does well in the talent section (as opposed to just the "no talent" section-the long straight).
NoSoup4U 10-18-2004, 02:28 PM Nick -
what about the bimmerworld brake cooling kit? Any opinions on that?
sunir 10-18-2004, 02:29 PM I thought you said you had Ultimates on. Or was that on the rear?
the rears were those Axxis pads...those are junk on track. Nick, you have a heavy car...it's gonna eat up pads at a fast rate...and performance will not stay consistant with pad life reduction...my suggestion: HT-10 F, Blue 9012 R, or HT14 F, HT10 R ....I am suggesting a little more aggressive front compound than rear due to factory brake bias in these cars, E36 & 46 same deal...
as for mph through the chute, glad you guys are feeling more comfortable with it (just look for a debris flag in that area because if someone laid down oil and you hit it, that's the end of your car, I've seen it happen twice this season  )...other than that these BMW cars do real well at Summit, they can be completely floored damn near everywhere on that track, including down the chute which is simply a downhill increasing radius kink with tons of grip and room!
NoSoup4U 10-18-2004, 02:35 PM He does well in the talent section (as opposed to just the "no talent" section-the long straight).
Honestly, that talent section is the only place I could really catch cars. Coming out of turn 9 ... to many of the cars had so much HP in the straight. I would catch a few in turn 1 ... ;)
That's why I was so impressed with Jesse, only b/c of my HP in the straight was I able to keep a constant distance. He would close the gap on me in the talent portion (preparing excuse ... :stickoutt)
I am assuming okay, praying it was merely b/c of his rcomps and ability to hold the corner speeds more than I could ... every turn, a little slide here and a little there ...
I was REALLY getting killed in T1 though ... Jesse would make up like 50 yards easily just b/c I did not carry that much speed through T1. I was definitely not doing something correctly. That and T3 gave me some problems. I do not think I ever found the proper line on that turn. I was definitely braking to early and to hard in many portions, which is always safer than sorry though.
Andy -- sure, you can have my passenger side grill if you really want it. I am thinking of actually just leaving it empty or putting some mesh there. I was going to put VTEC in the sides ... :stickoutt
AlfaEric 10-18-2004, 02:49 PM Jesse, James & Sean - Thanks for the rides and for not scaring me too much my first time out there.
That was a lot of fun but I think I'll stick with autox for a while. I *might* be convinced to come out next year but I'll probably want to go to a few more events and ride along and learn as a passenger/spectator first.

things look much more decieving from the passenger's seat, partly because you are not getting nearly as much feedback from the car...you may think the entry to a curve at a given speed is fast when in truth the entry could be 10 or 15mph faster...or the braking could be pushed back another 50 or 100 ft fro example. Best way to learn is to get out there and start slowly, go your own pace and build from there...

The funny thing, sunir, is that when you were driving, what you were doing with my car felt so right that I actually felt GREAT as a passenger.
I think I'm going to try HT14s and a brake cooling kit as an intermediate step before a BBK.
That and from now on, I will look over the pads WAY more carefully and never go out with less than a quarter of the pad remaining. By the end of the day I was eating through pad at a rate of around a millimeter every ten minutes, I think.

I know things are deceiving from the other side. I would just prefer to go out and see how other events are run and get a little more exposure to the events before driving one myself. I have no intention of going out there and driving anywhere near the speeds I saw yesterday and I just would feel safer having watched a few more events.

Glad I could help Nick :) ...truth is I had a lot of fun in your car, what a nice tossable well behiaved car ...thanks again for letting me drive it! I'm glad I could help you and Andy out this weekend, if it halps both of you become a little more comfortable with track driving and as a bonus a bit faster, than that's cool...we're always learning, that's the beauty of it :)
yeah you don't need a BBK at this point, use some SS lines and HT14 front pads along with HT10s in the rear, check the pads every track day...the cooling kit is a great idea, give Barry at RRT a call, tell him Sunir sent 'ya!
oh yeah, just shoot me a PM or something whenever you want your bumper back...and again, good drivng this weekend, keep up the great work!
I have no intention of going out there and driving anywhere near the speeds I saw yesterday
That shouldn't be an issue-that's what Sunir is saying. You shouldn't be thinking of even trying to. Go at your own pace when you first do it. Hell, drive like you would through a backroad.
Just because it is a DE and on a roadcouse doesn't mean you have to try to hit triple digit speeds. It's a driver's class to learn first and foremost. You're there to learn. When James and I started and we were driving very slow. I know Andy doesn't go full throttle.
But yeah, if that is what will make you form a decision, that is cool. Nothing wrong with checking it out first. Andy and I checked out DEs for the longest time before trying them.

I have NO intention of going fast out there. I would like to try driving it at some point to see what it feels like and see how much I enjoy it. I personally feel that I would like to go out there and watch for a while and learn the basics first. This way when I get an instructor and they throw all that intro info at me I already have some base knowledge and don't miss anything. I know myself and know that when a ton of info is thrown at me at once I tend to forget things. If I go out and learn a little at a time I'll get more out of the official instructions.

nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 03:53 PM Not trying to go fast your first time out is a great thing. It's taken me quite a few days to work up to the speeds I'm going--my first day out I was actually cruising down the main straight at 85 to preserve my brakes. :p
I know Andy doesn't go full throttle.
I hit full throttle once this whole weekend. That was when a guy who was not letting me by finally waved me coming out of turn 10.
I have fun mainly in the twisties. Going fast in that section is exciting to me. :dunno

I guess that didn't work... ;) j/k Sorry again about your troubles. I would have liked to stay to help more but I'm pretty useless to begin with and Pete was my ride. :) I'm glad everything is going to be okay.
I was a passenger a little behind you when you went off. That made me want to go and learn more before trying it (just to be safe). I would like to see where people tend to have trouble and how to handle it before I even think about taking my car out there.

jterp 10-18-2004, 04:09 PM With all this talk of future DE's...

I might be in. Anyone interested in doing VIR in Nov.?? :D

Oh yeah, I just sealed the deal. Brembo BBK here we come :buttrock Who wants to "help" me install it?
nick325xit 5spd 10-18-2004, 05:31 PM Well... The provisional butcher's bill is $1300, it looks like. I need to pull off the front bumper and make sure there's no hidden damage under there.

If you want a helping hand, let me know. I'll can head up to York and help out.
The date is Nov 19-21. It is a really good deal. $300 for 3 days. PCA Potomac region is inviting members of the BMWCCA National Capital Chapter.

You know what, it might not be a bad idea for all of us to pitch in to get a trailor. You never know if any one of us might need it....especially since you could use it anyway.
Let's work the details out through PM/ phone.
jterp 10-18-2004, 05:45 PM I have access to a flat open trailer that we could use for free -- I just don't have a vehicle to tow it with. My wrangler won't do the job. I am very interested in doing this event though -- I'll see if i can work something out.

Anyone have a hookup w/a rental company? We could rent a Tahoe and store our spares and stuff in it and tow w/it?

Let me know when you need me to come up, man!
I have zero vacation time left and can't make that Friday. If I do go, it would be on Sat and Sun.
sunir 10-18-2004, 05:52 PM VIR is fantastic...looks like Jeddy n' da boyzz will be heading down to Danville VA in Nov. woohoo :buttrock ...you guys can't enough eh! The main track is fast and fun, nice elevation changes and fast uphill esses...there are 2 straightaways where I top out my car in 5th gear on both so you'll really have a chance to let the car stretch it's legs! good mix of hp and technical sections :)
As for the trailer, if any of you have a truck (1/2 ton or larger) with a 2 5/16 ball and a class III hitch reciever, then I know of a place that rents trailers...I used to use them before I got mine...they are good quality and very good pricing.
jterp 10-18-2004, 05:53 PM When I bought my car I tried to rent a tow vehicle to tow it back with (the guy was going to give me his trailer) -- but no one rents Suv's with hitches. We'd have to rent the truck, put a hitch on it, then remove the hitch before we returned it.
BTW Jesse I'd be willing to give you a hand with your brakes too if you need another guy who's never done it before to help out. :D

Yeah, let's wait for Steve to clarify first.
Justin-can't we just rent from like a U Haul or something that has vehicles specifically for towing?
For the brake job, I'd imagine we all could figure it out. The most I've ever done was change pads and rotors which is easy. I figure we should also have a Bentley manual handy too. And a case of beer. ;)

NoSoup4U 10-18-2004, 07:13 PM That's not bad at all Nick. I just paid $2300 for front and rear bumpers and side skirts, no damage at all. That seems like a great price in fact. They had to fly in the guy from PPG painting to color-match the car. They normally use a computer that spits out the correct mixture ... e.g., they put in mileage, location of vehicle, and age, and it uses some algorithim to calculate it. But, not always correct.

I know Glenn towed his ITB GTI racecar with a Jeep Wrangler 6-cyl and also did it with a Explorer Sport 2 door (4.0L 6 cyl). But I don't know how light that racecar was. I'd imagine as much maybe little less than your Cobra. :dunno

It was friggin' cold plus the sun sets early so the track surface changes pretty quickly. I'd like to go but my better judgement tells me to make my mid Nov school with Tarheel be my last event of the year. Audi does run a nice school though.
1996 328ti 10-19-2004, 01:36 PM I would REALLY like to hit mid-ohio guys. I've heard mid-ohio is much more fun than VIR.
It is. Mid-Ohio is much more technical and has a great rythm to it.
The facilities are better at VIR but Mid-Ohio is a better road course.
I joined Northern Ohio, BMW CCA to do do their Memorial Day weekend school. It's a 7-7 1/2 drive from Germantown.

The 2 tracks are entirely different...VIR is much faster with more passing opportunities because it's longer, it is also pretty technical in certain areas (overall one of my favorite tracks)...M-O is technical and rhythmic as T7-12, maddness, thundervalley & keyhole are awesome, not too fast of a track in terms of speeds, but a challenging track to master (I don't have very many laps there compared to other racers)...you all should like both but perhaps each for it's unique qaulity.
jterp 10-19-2004, 02:00 PM I'll go anywhere --
I know Jeff is to busy to come out to this things ... besides, you better have a 7 figure life insurance policy my friend if your wife is cool with you going out :cool
That was the first thing I bought...so yes, I do have a 7 figure policy.
Though I do have to check into if there are any exclusions for track events.
Post what you guys find....I might be able to sneak in one more weekend
jeff

You just haven't been to Mid-Ohio enough. ;)
Every track has something special to offer.
I'm not a horsepower guy. Going +120 mph scares me. :help
But getting airborne in Madness is very cool. :buttrock
Pretty soon people will not be showing up at autocrosses because they will be at THE TRACK! ;) Now we are having fun.

the G&W fall fling is a great event...G&W and Sasco Sports are located on the VIR premisis and both are cool places to go check out...G&W is running in Grand Am this year with a DP car, also ran with a BMW powered Picchio is the past along with several GT3-RSR Porsches...Andy Lally, Darren Law, Cort Wagner and several others have participated in this event in the red (comp. licenses with GA, GAC, PCA, SCCA, BMWCCA etc...they say this group is for proffesional racers only, but I think I've seen some PCA and BMWCCA guys in there before) group, so for me it would be a treat to run with this group.
Lots of track time for all at one of the best tracks in America at a very fair price! They have 4 groups I think...the only drawback is that I am not sure if they have instructors for the beginner group...if you've never been to VIR or are in the beginner or intermediate groups, I'd suggest you have an instructor with you at least for a few sessions...also I think are liberal on passing (don't know if point by's are required) in all the non-beginner groups...
definately consider this event guys... :)

be more than happy to ride along with you guys...VIR is a fun track! Actually the first track I was ever on...
I really hope I can make it out to this event...in the red group its run under race conditions with full open passing like we'd have during practice on any given race weekend (the only difference being that this would probably not have transponder feeds to timing/scoring like they'd have during practice on a race weekend)...so that would be awesome running under true comp conditions with Grand Am, Speed WC, GAC cars with pro drivers...I'd learn so much and have a blast!

it wouldn't be racing per se, because there'd be no starts (i.e pace car lap followed by a green flag dropping ...) however, I believe it would be run under race conditions meaning no silly point by's or waiting in traffic...I think what you'd see is a good deal of testing and pitting and back out again for the most part...some teams/crew would be collecting data and/or making changes...
for me it'd be fun because of the level of racecars & drivers out on track with me (most of these guys would be pro drivers who compete in a pro series)...I'd learn a lot and it'd give me some good experience...

yeah, at the Audi event last spring in April...Randy Pobst is a great pro driver who has done this G&W event before I think...now imagine being on track with guys like that not during a timed race, but under full race conditions like a 30 min practice test & tune session...that's what I think the red group at G&W's fall fling would be like :)

Yeah, let's wait until Monday. Let's try to figure out who all can go before we commit. It would be cool if we can have a trailor just in case anything happens, too.
I want to register in the beginner group. I am looking to have a stress-free time at VIR. I am looking at this as an opportunity to experience the track and learn the line, nothing more.

RA1s are fine in the rain as long as there is some thread depth.
Before some of you get too deep into this you better start reading your insurance policy when it comes to your daily driver. Once you start doing open seasons you cross the line of driving schools. And even some insurance companies have problems with DEs. I won't do lapping days or time trials for that reason. I simply can't afford the risk. I use http://www.americancollectorsins.com/de_policy.htm as supplemental insurance for the track. Not available in VA. It is only for DEs though.
VIR in December with Audi. My guess is they will have room if you decide now unlike BMW Taraheel that fills up the first day. Just dress warm.

Yeah, the Blue group was fast. I didn't realize how fast it was because I was riding with Jesse and he is fast.
I rode with Jeff Lee and he did a VERY good job keeping up even though his car was HP handicapped compared to the other cars out there. That was impressive in itself. :clap
Jeff was talking about lack of hp, but I love that car!!! Once it's on the cam, the car is pretty strong.
I bet that would be killer on a course like BeaveRun.

I liked it a lot. That thing does really handle well. It seemed like you could keep pushing it in the carousel and it would just keep turning.
Great car IMO.
that was only the second time i've driven that car...so i haven't figured out what its limits are...
maybe this trip to VIR will help me figure it out :D

I'm not saying the RA-1 's were entirley to blame -- but they certainly didn't help. :) (As compared to a set of all season tires or something) -- They were great in the dry weather, but in the wet I couldn't get on the throttle much without them breaking loose. They would have been fine for street driving in the wet, but I was trying to chase down a VTEC on the straightaway :D

The main reason why I want to go is to check out that track. I don't plan on driving hard. Also, I would rather go when it is cooler out as opposed to it being hot.

Yeah i know -- I'm not actually that worried about it -- When it comes down to it I'd rather just be in the group with less people in it -- I feel like sometimes the beginner groups and the intermediate groups paces are dictated more so by how many cars are on the track rather than the skill levels. When we were at pocono I was on the track with all 4 skill levels at one point in the day and the D group (supposed to be the very beginners) was faster than the C group because C was so crowded.
Oh, I see. You make a good point.
Sunir, was this event crowded last year (or whenever you last participated)??
jterp 10-27-2004, 04:18 PM jesse did you sign up for an additional banquet ticket? do you think you'll go to the banquet?

Nope, probably won't go. If I do decide to go, I'm sure we can buy them there.
P.S. Anyone ever use Pagid Oranges? I just ordered a set, track pads are fcuking expensive for this BBK :(

dunno...didn't make it last year...only find out about it from 2 guys I know that raced in Grand Am last year.
We always stay at the Inkeeper hotel on Rt58 West in Danville. It's a really good, clean, and safe place to stay and their rates are affordable, plus it's only like 15 min from the track and you pass right by biscuitville for breakfast (mmmm, the best breakfast :) ) There are several hotels along Rt 58...
as for the banquet, honestly in most cases they don't even check for tickets, I think in only one banquet out of like 7 race weekends this season did any chapter/region hosts check for tickets, that was BMW CCA CR this event may be diffferent since it's privately hosted by G&W and CDOC but like Jesse said, you should be able to buy a ticket there if you need to. Otherwise we always hit up Outback or the Mexican place down the street from there...
NoSoup4U 10-28-2004, 10:26 AM I used pagid oranges Jess -- one day, they were gone ... ask Nick/Pete/Jed that saw them. My brake pads had about the same left as Nick that day. Only 2K miles of street driving on them, some autocross, and the track day :(
That's why I didn't purchase them again ... I bought the bobcats from Eric for daily street driving and will probably purchase the XP9's from him come spring.

Got a link?
No, I downloaded it about 2 months ago.
If I see you this weekend, I will burn it to CD and give you a copy.
It's 11-13 minutes long. Really cool.

Depending on how fast you drive.

:rolleyes
I am talking about the video. :D
jterp 10-28-2004, 11:38 AM Me too. A racecar driver like jesse would probably watch the video in fast forward -- whereas you or i would be watching it in slow motion.
:D
