View Full Version : What a $hitty day...

So it looks like the motor is going to have to be completely rebuilt now since it's run with no oil pressure 2x in a month. There is no point pulling the head to replace the head gasket (that's what happened today) and risk the bottom end having problems and then having to pull it out again and do it a second time. So $6000 later, I'll have a bad ass motor, and that sounds all cool and everything... but that's cool if $6000 was burning a hole in my pocket. Such is life with beating the shit out of a car for fun, but just not expected.

To make the day even worse, I sat on I-95 for 3.5 hours tonight, and everytime I looked in the mirror I saw my broken car sitting on the trailer. 3.5 hours and pissing in a big Gatorade bottle wasn't fun either. It's not 9:30 and I literly just got home. I'm going to eat my salad and go to bed.

Ok, rant over.

Andy
10-16-2004, 09:28 PM
Damn dude, sorry to hear that. :(

Yeah, I think it is a good idea to do the rebuild right the first time or don't do it at all. Not sure of what your daily driver car situation is, but if you have another car to drive and you don't have the cash to do the rebuild correctly right now, I would let the M3 sit until you save up the $$.

I had the motor that is in my car now for 9 months. I wanted to do it right the first time. It was a hard wait...but it was worth it.

Good luck!!

vjlax18
10-16-2004, 09:44 PM
Actually, it's really easy to wait... it can't be fixed if it can't be paid for. :( :biglaughb

Once it's done though it should have much more power. :evil2

So until the tax refund shows up, it'll be sitting outside the garage. :(

Sorry to hear about your crappy day. On my way back from western Maryland, I sat on I-70 for a while with a fatal accident. People just can't drive anymore.

Good luck with your engine rebuilt.

Jed
10-16-2004, 10:08 PM
Yeah John. Kind of a bad way to end the season. At least it is the end of the season and you don't necessarily need the car for autoxing and you can start to plan for the next one.

Sorry it happened, dude.

Good luck with the motor man, I know you kinda wanted to push this off and not really do it this year. But at least you can get it done right and have a solid motor.

I'm sorry that about your engine. On the bright side, you'll end up with a MUCH stronger engine. The timing was at least better than if you broke in the middle of say July.

It will turn out in the end,

Don't know what the plans are now. Brant thinks I should just buy a new motor from BMW because of the possible problems with the bottom end. The good thing with that is that it's under $6k, and the car will be a good as new. The bad thing is that it won't be a B-Spec motor like Bud and Austin's. I'd like to have the extra power, but it may not work out. It does look like it will be fixed sooner then later though... I just have 32 more car payments to add to my current 28. :(

10-18-2004, 07:24 PM
Euro motor will cost around $8-9K. Then, to get it to work, you need to spend an add'l $2-3K.

A used M3 motor would cost around $3500 ... if you keep your eyes peeled open w/around 50K on it. Would that be an option JD? What I would do is email marshall -- he's got good leads on everything.

p.s. -- JV -- you need to bring me some of that brewski things and I can drop it off to marshall :)

Did you ultimately decide that you were gong to go back to SP? Why not rebuild, or just buy a block and build it to an inch within SP rules. If you're going to stay in SM, why even bother with the "correct" engine at all?

Or cut your losses and start over with something that will be easier to work into the class you want to run.

Euro motor wouldn't be emissions legal, and getting an S54 to work would cost a ton because I'd have to find a totalled S54 M Coupe/Roadster as a donor car.

I'm working on getting things the way I like them...ya'll know me. ;)

Yeah, but the S50's won't hook up to the OBD-II stuff. :(

Do you really need OBDII to pass emissions? Might want to talk to James about this as he ditched all his crap, still has a cat, and still drives it everyday in MD..

I'm convinced you could get away with ditchin it.

vjlax18
10-19-2004, 11:17 AM
James is going to have to put everything back in to pass emissions. They plug into the OBD-II port now for 96+ cars. If they don't get a reading, you automatically fail. I talked to him Saturday about it and told him to find an aftermarket RIEGER bumper and lower the front end all the way. They might waive his off if the car is too low to fit over the rollers. (The rollers are still there for the OBD-I cars)

Neil
10-19-2004, 11:17 AM
Depends upon whether the particular jurisdiction performing the inspection *merely* sniffs the tailpipe or instead plugs (or scans) the OBD-II port to read the codes.

DC and an increasing number of other areas no longer check tailipipe emissions on '96 and later models and depend on the codes.

Neil

vjlax18
10-19-2004, 11:23 AM
My port was used 5 months ago. And now that I have 60 more months of payments, I can't take the car off the street, and I wouldn't want to either.

The emissions inspection station in Columbia waived tests for my old GTI and also the M3 because they felt both cars were too low. I'd get the car inspected there when the time comes.

rautox
10-19-2004, 11:30 AM
I looked into this quite a bit because of the new car. And I haven't heard of any MD emissions stations that don't check via the port first. A non-functioning check engine light or port as well as a lit check engine light or any codes and you fail before you even get to the rollers.

Yup. That's how I got an exemption on my emissions testing. They stopped me from going onto the rollers, had me pull over to the side and they examined my car and deemed it too low and gave me a 2 year exemption.

This is one of those times where ricer-slamming your shyt to the point you can't drive it comes in handy.

Yeah, but the S50's won't hook up to the OBD-II stuff. :(

as long as your head is alive it will... ;)

seriously...why wouldn't you just get a euro motor or the new S54 motor ?? :confused

I mean for an extra few grand...its worth the ponies and a real M engine ?? :)

what he said, euro has no obd2 unless you are lucky enough to find an 99.

as for the s54, you'll need a parts car to make it work with full REAL diagnostics. have looked through the etm, and it's pretty horrible the amount of crap that has to be on the can ring to make the ecm happy. :(

the other approach is downright-illegal, very expensive, requires training, but will pass any and all interogation on the plug. basically you wire the diagnostics plug to a KVaser card in a laptop, (http://www.kvaser.com) then run emulation software. this will definitely work (don't ask), but i'm not going to take that approach.

whatever it is john, can't wait to see it run again! :)
