Who's your F1 pick, and why???
I'm partial to Montoya partly 'cuz he didn't get the respect he was due in his premier F1 season. Ralf bad-mouthed him, the press tried to downtalk him (mentioning things like the proverbial "hot-headed Latin temperament"--what a crock. Nobody said that about Senna), and just about no one gave him credit for such an outstanding rookie year performance.

People are slow to remember that 2001 was his rookie year, like Kimi Raikkonen. Consider the obstacles he faced last season like being rear-ended at Brazil, botched pit actions and resulting overheated blown motors, and being the new kid on his team (although he did test for them prior to his foray into CART).

For several years Michael has enjoyed the advantage of a well-run team custom-built for the purpose of making HIM the champion with the supporting cast of Rubens Barrichello, whereas Montoya joined an established team with Ralf as the established driver. On top of that, he's a double-underdog. Not only is he going head-to-head with Michael Schumacher, he also has Michael's little brother as a TEAMMATE!!

The guy has to have CHARACTER to deal with all that BS, keep the press at bay, win over his BMW-Williams team members, challenge the world champion and outperform his teammate in his rookie year, and still come from a relatively unheard of country (Columbia) not known for producing great drivers.

I wish y'all could have seen him at the Malaysian GP. Michael pulled his customary "zag across the track to pinch the second grid position" (Damn, this move is tired), and JP wasn't having any of it. He jinked left and went around the outside of Michael, (the OUTSIDE!!), into Turn 1, only to be unjustly penalized after the follow-on contact. Even Michael himself commented that the penalty was uncalled for.

The show I suspect TV audiences missed was the drive both Michael and Montoya put on from the back of the field. Montoya sliced relentlessly through the grid, filling mirrors and picking cars off like an expert surgeon removing hapless track tumors. I witnessed first-hand as he would march up behind the next car and perform the cold, calculated pass, one of them around the outside in the final turn. He's got my respect, not because he finished in 2nd, but because he DROVE his ass to 2nd.

I get the impression that JP is making it very clear in Michael's head (and everyone else's, for that matter) that Montoya is here to win races, period, and to hell with all this hype about the current world champion and the Ferrari mystique.

Well-said as always, Phantom ...

Personally, I haven't wrapped my head around F1 enough to critique technique or strategy (Malaysia 2002 was the first one I've been able to watch in roughly five years, d'oh!), so I have to go with my heart. For a lot of the same reasons, I've got a Montoya cap on as well. He's had so many obstacles put in his way, his sheer willpower has earned my respect. On top of that, in a time when it seems that so many are afraid of Michael, JPM has the stones to take it right to him. He is there to RACE!

I first heard of him when he won at Indy. That was impressive enough for me, and I was so excited to hear he was coming to F1 ... that he was coming over to Williams, though, was a smile-maker. (Hmm ... now if he had gone to McLaren in some alternate universe, I wonder how I'd feel ... :) )

Every once in a while, you find some young-gun with talent, character, poise and unvarnished balls. That, to me, is exactly what F1 needs after the last few years of Schumifest. (I don't have a problem with Michael, he is damn good, but I like things to be shaken up!) We have a few new drivers who show a lot of promise (I also like Button and Kimi -- though he seems to have a bit of extra 'tude), but our man Montoya is the guy who's doing it faster, after overcoming the press and even his own team.

Michael should be a straightforward target after all of that. :)

Ralf - because he is running faster than Mikey right now!!! :)

Now, having seen three Grand Prixs, I'd say Michael for driver's, and BMW-Williams for constructor's.

I think that once you factor in their respective engine and aero packages, the ferrari and williams are too competitive with each other to say one can clearly dominate the other. So it comes down to strategy. Ferrari is giving Michael the world; reubens is the boy on the back burner. But over at williams, both Ralf and JP are being given an equal shot. In other words, Willams "2nd car" (whomever that may be in any given race) will help give Williams the constructor's title. But Michael and Ferrari are still too dominant for Williams to *also* take the driver's championship.

Or is this just too blindingly obvious. :)

My picks for the end of the season:

Drivers championship:
1. Michael Schumacher
2. Juan Pablo Montoya
3. Ralf Schumacher

I chose this order because Michael has the talent and Ferrari's backing. Montoya has the balls as well as an incredible natural talent that has yet to be refined enough to consistently beat Michael. Ralf is simply the next best.

As for the constructors championship, I'd have to agree with Jon. If Rubens doesn't finish any races, he isn't helping Ferrari's cause (gotta feel bad for the guy  ).

Constructor's Championship:
1. BMW Williams
2. Ferrari
3. Mclaren

looks to me like montoya needs exactly what someone else mentioned; a little more F1 experience to cultivate his natural talents. his poise and determination, esp considering the pressures associated with f1 stardom, and his brash style all work to his advantage, and i expect to see him more consistently on the podium as the season progresses. however, ferrari, and esp. schumacher, have a well oiled machine, and the confidence that goes with it. that will give michael his championship, but my vote is to williams for manufacturers. however, if JP gets it togethor, i'd love to see him take it, or even ralph.

Just finished watching the San Marino GP. Interesting how Michael switched to Rubens' car after qualifying for the race because Michael thinks it's faster. Gotta hand it to Rubino for being a good sport, eh? Nominate him for best supporting actor.

Williams now trails the constructor's championship by 3 points. I'm a bit disappointed we didn't see a Montoya/Schumi battle.

Ditto on the:
1) Michael
2) JPM
3) Ralfy

At least until JPM gets some more seat time and a little more sorted set-up.

Nobody picked Alex Yoong?

I think it's hilarious how he is even racing in F1, such a funny story.

Ralf is running more cautious right now, but is getting more points because of it. JPM is a better driver. He doesn't pus out when it comes to Michael and has made some amazing passes. I think he's beef with Michael is always going to hurt him more.

Michael
Ralf
JPM

Williams
Ferrari
Who cares - CWestMclaren

I hate Mclaren but I do like Kimi Raikonnen. I also think it's pretty amazing what Toyota has done in Year #1. I think it's sad with what's going on over at Jaguar.

And pick for FIA WRC (like it's hard to do): PEUGEOT!:laugh
