View Full Version : Z3 2.8 vs. Volvo V70R wagon
Coming back to work after lunch, I see this «Volvo V70 R AWD» wagon pass me. I think nothing of it, and don't know that it is the wagon version of the nice, 300hp sedan that looks much more aggressive. :dunno
So he passes me, and just for fun I think of toying with it. The way his car shakes on bumps, I can tell he's on it, and sure enough, I don't, gain. :confused I'm in 4th at around 75 and yes, I should've been in 3rd (story of my life), but with what's about to come, I'm happy I wasn't...
This is a police hideout place, and within seconds, I see a car slam the brakes, the Volvo brakes for its life, and so do I with what's left of my brakes (not much). A cop has just arrested some schmuck in an Echo. Being in 4th, my car isn't screaming like it usually is, and we go by unnoticed... :evil2
The Volvo hops in the left lane, I rev match and downshift, and we start the long, uphill right hander in which I so violently raped a Cougar a few months ago. I give my all, knowing that at 90-95 mph, I'm reaching my limits in that curve. The damn Volvo is gripping very decently. The car shakes on bump, but the tires and the obviously-not-designed-two-decades-ago-like-the-Z3's-rear-one suspension keeps it right on track, despite some obvious body roll.
I do not gain, I do not lose ground. Dead even.
We reach a stop light. :devillook
I'm ready, but he doesn't launch at all. Given that I have somewhat started off the line quicker than him, he hears me and floors it. I'm a bit taken by surprise, but by the time the cloud of black smoke vanishes from his exhaust, I'm chasing his ultra-safe a$$. Dead even through first, I gain like 1 foot in 2nd, we maintain distances, we reach a nasty 270° right hander, I take it fast, so does he, he's obviously struggling but I'm not faring that much better, I rev match superbly by mid-turn to compensate for the loss of speed (this curve gets tighter at the end, so you have to let off a bit...), I'm now in 2nd, and at the end, I mash the fun pedal perfectly, avoiding any tail waving action, and minimaliziing the effects of his AWD traction upon exiting a turn.
Throughout the turn, the distance was the same, and it remains dead even afterwards. Wow. :) He moves to the right and brakes to avoid missing his exit. Good fun. Very good.
Then, I arrive at the office and checked out the specs... Oh my God... I assumed it was the 5-speed auto.
300 hp @ 5,500 rpm
258 lbs @ 1,850 rpm
Not bad, huh?
marinakorp 10-04-2004, 03:03 PM yep, those buggers are quick... find one in a manual... and they are a blast to drive... and EASY to mod a bit.. a few extra ponies, etc
the bad thing is tht they are FWD biased on the AWD... not a traditional AWD... but will pick up a certain % is the fronts slip a bit
nice cars... for grocery getters
4-BNGR 10-04-2004, 03:09 PM Yup! Thos flying shi% bricks are pretty damn quick. YOu can get away with a manual boost controller and slightly bump the psi but the ecu is omnipotent :nono
Oh, and on the start - he could not rev b/c he's auto. Believe me he was "going" :devillook he just had to get past the turbo lag to cement his intentions.
E30VOLUTION 10-04-2004, 03:10 PM dont mess with a volvo
I know he didn't floor it upon starting. I would've seen the smoke. I nearly rammed his ass.
SilverStreak 10-04-2004, 03:18 PM Nice run, Hugo! Yeah, those things can be quick. Good job!
The little 2.8 is getting there... :evil2

Only after he coughed it out past the turbo - more like hacked it out. El Bogo-Rama....

I used to have one of those, 850 T-5R they can be crazy fast. That was taken in Sweden and their versions of the cars came in manual. Mine was an auto :-(
Cattivo328 10-05-2004, 04:57 PM Ha sounds like a fun run. Yeah, my mom had one of those and it was a really fun car to drive. Id use to love the expressions on peoples faces when you blew by them in the Turbo Brick. I kinda wish I would've kept that car to tell you the truth.
BMW#1Enthusiast 10-05-2004, 05:17 PM nice kill, how much power are you making?
EuroBeast 10-06-2004, 06:34 AM Volvo... :rolleyes
a car for ppl who are likely to crash, hence the safety equipment. My aunt drives a S80 T6, too bad she is no street racer ;) It has around 300hp but is heavy as a truck (the car that is ;) )
The R models are pretty quick but still the car has the sex appeal of a vegetable, some like it but are embarassed to admit :D
mihalis 10-06-2004, 08:03 AM nice kill Hugo. Yeah, those things can be very fast. There was a guy that I knew and he had a 850 T5 [older version] that wagon was crazy fast and it handled too  The only problem with that was that it was FWD and auto :( still a fun car to drive for a teenager...fast, auto, FWD, tons of space for high school girls... = wet dream for teenager :)
I miss those good old days...
nice kill, how much power are you making?
I don't have a dyno sheet to prove my claims, but I should be around 205-208 rwhp.
CSBM5 10-06-2004, 08:32 PM Volvo... :rolleyes

Got two R wagons here...nice complement to the M5, but I can tell you that the automatic version of the 2004 V70R/S60R is a real dog compared to the 6-speed manual versions. Volvo limits torque in 1st and 2nd to a low value and then limits it to 258 (compared to 295) in 3rd and above. The V70R auto is about as quick as the 1996 850R. :(
My first car was a 1997 S90. I always got compliments from old european guys. But that car is safe. I've seen what it looks like behind the front bumper and its not like regular cars. Theres what looks like a solid double plated chunk of metal. After i got into a pretty bad accident and the bumper wasnt repaired yet i used to just drive around ramming into random objects.

1990m3 10-06-2004, 11:28 PM yeah those are fast. I have an 850T wagon as my daily driver. It's got a chip, and I shortened the wastegate like four years ago when it was my dad's car. It's fast as shit. if I floor it off the line the tires just spin. It beats E36 M3's on the highway with ease, and just barely edges out my E30 M3. That car is fast, funny how the daily driver is faster than the sports car. But it's true, that thing hauls ass and I get many looks from unassuming drivers. I got the little wing on the back of the hatch with 15% tints all the way around. It's pretty badass looking for a Volvo Wagon. Too bad my brother's '95 9000 Aero is so fast, I don't stand a chance against him.
If it makes you guys feel any better, I have to drive it with the tranny in econ mode otherwise I spin tires too easily. Sport mode is almost violent, the boost is almost instant and it'll downshift as low as it can go and take it right up to redline. I win most of my highway pulls in Econ, it's so fast I don't even need the sport mode :nono

OhOh! Post some pics. Once being a fellow Volvo driver I can definately appreciate a clean Turbo Brick.
EuroBeast 10-07-2004, 02:45 AM Maybe it's just that I've seen way too many volvos around :/ Some volvos sure are fast (even a 70's volvo amazon sleeper that puts out 600rwhp in finland). Any make of car can be made fast but there is not such thing as a fast stock volvo. At best they put out 300hp and the weight kills any edge it might have on a stock M3 here.

Well the wheelspin is because it is a FWD car :) And Saab's the same as Volvos; can be made fast easy but the word tractor comes to mind about the looks. A friend of mine has a 9-3 Aero with 300whp and his brothers have equal power saab 900 and 9000 aeros. The 3 of them were running a highway doing 200km/h and these turkish looking guys pass them in a E39 BMW M5. The boys floor it and as the M5 hits the limiter in 250km/h first the 9-3 passes him, then the 9000 and last but not to be outdone the 900aero slows to match pace with the M5 and flips the bird and accelerates away.
Same guy has a "toy" saab 900t with everything ripped out to save weight, it is about 2000lb now. The engine puts out enough power to spin the wheels at 100mph in the 5th gear. MAD machine. :alright
BTW there's a saying here which roughly translates to "styling a volvo is like putting make-up on a pig" ;)
About your AUTOMATIC 850T whooping E36M3's I say bs! Not even a T5R manual stands a chance, it is a whole second slower to 62 than the M3. Torque is less also so not a chance in the higer speeds either. Race ppl with real M3's, not 325 W/ bodykits :rolleyes

Easy with the attitude, there, buddy.
You ask him to race real M3s... I'll ask you not to magazine race. Thank you.
EuroBeast 10-07-2004, 07:48 AM :tong c'mon man, it is an automatic + only mods are a chip and a wastegate. That thing is not killing M3's period. Not from the line or the hwy. Not even in volvo magazines ;)
4-BNGR 10-07-2004, 11:11 AM The swedes own the germans ;)
1990m3 10-07-2004, 08:50 PM sorry guys, not trying to start a fight. Just saying the few guys I know with E36 M3's were behind me in highway pulls.
I'm just putting out there that not all cars have to look fast to be fast. Not looking to ruffly any feathers. Remember, I drive a BMW too.

Against a US Speed auto M3 it is VERY likely. Not everyone has a eurospec M3 after all the majority of members in this forum are americans

Hugo and ramming asses!
I was looking for a 850T5R or whatever they are called when I was looking for my wagon, but there are very few of them here. It would have been a great parts getter/daily driver! Unfortunately, I couldn't find one and settled on my 525iT. :rolleyes
