View Full Version : Talimena Twisties Drive starting in Dallas.
TopGeek 10-01-2004, 01:01 AM Austin and I were talking tonight about a group drive and since I've done this particular drive a bunch of times with motorcycle groups, he asked if I would lead. Sure! Sounds fun so here are the details!
Date: SATURDAY October 16th.
Departure: 8am from Einstein's Bagels in Plano. Einsteins is on the SOUTH WEST corner of 15th Street and 75. Its the first exit north of 190 (george bush turnpike) and 75. Breakfast will start there at 7am if you want to eat. Show up with a FULL TANK of gas before the 8 am departure. There are gas stations on the other 3 corners so just top off at one of them when you arrive.
ROUTE: We will be travelling ENTIRELY back roads all day. I know a great run through north east Texas that will run us through Tom Bean on the way to Paris and then up through Iradel, Broken Bow and then eventually into the Ouachita mountains and to the TALIMENA SCENIC BIWAY which runs from Talihena OK, to Mena Arkansas. We will stop at many of the Scenic overlooks (there are around 30 of them) on the Talimena Biway for photos, etc. and then we will have lunch at the QUEEN WILEMENA LODGE which is up on the biway. We'll then descend into Mena, get gas and head back to Dallas. If we're dilligent, we'll be back in Dallas before, or around, 6pm on Saturday afternoon.
I'll lead the drive (I've lead sportbike groups up there dozens of times and even a ride that included 65 BMW K1200LTs one time) and I know the route well (including where several speed traps will be). I will print out maps for everyone attending so that if something comes up and you have to leave the drive early (or if you somehow get lost) you won't be stranded.
Speaking of getting lost...
The format will be a Lead car, the main group, and then a Sweeper car. The Lead and the Sweeper will be in contact with walkie talkies. The route will be in the country so once we get out in the twisties and away from towns, everyone can drive at whatever pace you feel comfortable driving. Then, whenever we come to a stop sign or a turn, the leader will stop and wait until the sweeper (last car in the chain) has arrived and says "everything is cool".
We then continue along (and we don't continue until ever car is accounted for - the sweeper's job is to stop and assist anyone with a problem so he has to have a cel phone to call the leader if that happens).
This allows for everyone to drive as fast or as slow as they want without worrying about getting lost. You may feel like driving like Ralph Schumacher for one stretch at the front of the pack, and then feel like driving like Miss Daisy the next stretch at the back of the pack - that's cool. IT'S NOT A RACE. When I lead sportbike rides, there are some of us that blast off at 170+mph in some sections and there are some of us that never break the speed limit - but we all end up gathered up at every intersection and we never lose anyone. The system works. (I'll also teach everyone a "pass it on" method for getting through traffic if we need to).
Before we leave I'll go through a rundown of how the day will play out, give a little "safety speech" and then we'll be off. It is NOT A RACE. Its a day to enjoy the drive, enjoy your car, and enjoy the scenery. It'll be a fairly long day of driving so make sure you check your tire pressure, have some water with you, etc.
Here is a little info about the Talimena Scenic Drive:
http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com/
...and here are some photos I've taken of my bikes up there in the past (to give you an idea of how amazing it is - the entire drive is on the top ridge of a mountain range - it's hard to beleive you are so close to Dallas as its like another planet completely!)

Austin 10-01-2004, 01:05 AM beat me to it just sent ya PM.
Sounds great I'm in.
Man those pics are great looks similar to the Texas Hill Country drive I've been on few times. Drives like this are so fun. I'm looking forward to this. I'm free any weekend but not Thanksgiving of course.
snk328is 10-01-2004, 01:22 AM I would love to do this drive. It really sounds like fun.
We definitely cannot do it on the October 23-24 weekend, because there just *might* be a night auto-x on the Sat. night preceeding the scheduled auto-x on the 24th... :devillook
1slowM3 10-01-2004, 01:30 AM I would love to do this drive. It really sounds like fun.

Oh really, is it LSC BMWCCA also? I need to get in as many auto-x's as i can
SG_M3 10-01-2004, 01:37 AM Sounds very cool. As long as we keep a mature, non stupid gumball type of drive. I really don't need someone who doesn't know how to drive rear ending me because they are an idiot.
hinzm3 10-01-2004, 01:49 AM I'm in.
Austin 10-01-2004, 01:54 AM October 16th or 30th ?
bimmerd00d 10-01-2004, 08:25 AM EVERYONE needs to buy a set of 5 mile 2 way radios, they're very helpful. I'm sure some of us will have 1 or 2 to spare for those who can't pick up a set. Austin and I did one of these a few months ago and it was great fun. Need to find some good restaurants up there too!!!

good then I will pick up your spare, j/k do they need to be brand specific or do they all share the same freqs/channels? I think I am the only none BMW'er :(.....I miss my bimmer

We have a set of Motorola Talkabouts, the 5 mile ones, and they work great. As long as they have the Roger beep you should be fine. Uniden and Cobras are decent as well. The top ones are Motorola and Uniden though.

TECKADEMICKS YO!!!
:lol
Austin 10-01-2004, 04:25 PM I have about 6 walkie talkies. They are different brands so I can tell you each one has its strong points. One brand will be good at recieveing but crappy on transmitting. The other will be just the oposite. CB's are the best since the range is much larger allowing the lead man more distance away from the sweeper car. I also have some CB's with mounting antenna for cars.
Is October 16th to soon ?
Rahul325 10-01-2004, 04:30 PM I would love to do this drive. It really sounds like fun.

If by Monday we have no huge contentions with that date - it'll be Oct 16th.

^HE SAID IT^
I have been on a lot of drives and only one time was there a major incident that was one time to many. The individual that slid of the mountain in Arkansas was a very experienced autocrosser and he luckily made it out with minor injuries. The best rule is if you drive at 9/10 on a prepared track then on this drive you should drive 7-8/10 to be safe for in most areas there is not much run off room if any. No mater how well the route is known there are always bind hills and curves that could be hiding livestock or disabled vehicles. I know this well because on two different runs through the Hill Country I have come over hills to find cows standing in the road not a good thing at twice the limit but no harm I just thanked Brembo for the rest of the drive for making great breaks and Porsche for a great suspension. The thing is just at the point you think you are being safe you can find out very quickly that you are not!

Austin 10-04-2004, 04:03 PM Dunno if I overlooked it but how many miles estimated are we looking at ? Total.
TopGeek 10-04-2004, 05:22 PM Total trip will be between 350 and 450 miles (if my memory serves). I'll take some time and plot it up and post it.
Less than 2 tanks of gas basically (or 4 tanks on a motorcycle).

.. haha that's awesome. A perfect candidate for America's Dumbest Criminals. Whoever's doing a video on this trip... I hope he's a little higher up on the IQ scale than that guy :D
TopGeek 10-05-2004, 02:47 PM Tell me they didn't want to kick the ass of the squid with the video camera.
If you get pulled over:
Rule 1: Hide the beer cans (kidding).
Rule 2: Hide the camera.
Rule 3: Hide the radar detector.

Ok, no one on this drive use a video CAMERA while driving! Before seeing this video I was thinking about bringing my camera and mount but screw that!
This does sound like an awesome drive though and I think I should be able to to make it.... I have one of the autocross committee Talk-a-bout radios that I can bring along too.

m3pastu 10-05-2004, 06:48 PM OK OK...Guys....that guys a tool!! I am going to bring a camera..and i am going to document the trip...but im not going to be stupid about it when it comes to encriminating footage and cops....God what a jackass! lol good vid... :lol
Austin 10-05-2004, 08:03 PM But in Oklahoma or Texas can a cop "take" the tape or camera from you ?
QuestMCoupe 10-05-2004, 08:58 PM Damn, I really wish I didnt have to work on that day. :mad :(
m3pastu 10-05-2004, 10:42 PM But in Oklahoma or Texas can a cop "take" the tape or camera from you ?
Wont matter cause one of my cams is tiny and has a quick release tape that even if he did see it i would have the tape out before he even had us pulled all the way over...And anyone with a E36 knows about the hidding spot under the coin holder and cup holders :D ...and a mini DV would fit easy there...
SecretAznSauce 10-06-2004, 10:32 AM Damn, I really wish I didnt have to work on that day. :mad :(

Just in general-
I always had a question.. Why do people consider internet forums any different from the outside world.. If you run your mouth on here, it will have an effect just like if you were in person, and most people arent prepared to deal with that effect..
internet or not.. Adult or not its really about respect.. i'd think.. IMHO

The way it is looking there are no concrete plans in place, so this 2nd installment of our statewide meet may be postponed. If that happens, I may be in.
Me too. If the plans to go to Ennis fall through and you're going to join these guys give me a call. i'm sure the wife would enjoy this more than the drag strip anyway.

I would like to setup a plan for ennis as well in november. Last year we went on nov 1st saturday and there were only about 20-25 cars there total. You could get as many runs in as you wanted and I think I ended up with around 11 runs total. Hopefully we can get something like this going again.
TopGeek 10-08-2004, 03:54 PM That's probably the Einstein's address... its not that hard, its right on the south west corner of 15th & I75 beside the Fina (which is on the true corner).
If you are coming up 75 from the south (i.e. from 635 or George Bush) you exit 15th (first exit after George Bush) and turn left under the overpass. Its there on your left 100 ft up the road.

Dealing with attendance I always assume 50% so we should have about 7-8 cars show up.
How many people have "NOT" been on a drive before ? Or how many people have never been on a drive, autox or DE ?
Mike scho you going ?

TopGeek 10-12-2004, 11:14 AM MAPS!
I'll have printed maps for everyone that is at Einsteins on Saturday morning - but I recommend you bring along a "real map" too in case you need to head home early or you somehow figure out a way to get lost :)
Remember.. I said this was a BACK ROAD trip.
Make sure you bring your camera. When we get up on the Scenic Drive there are tons of scenic over with great photo opportunities.

SG_M3 10-12-2004, 11:56 AM Don't think i'll make it. Car is leaking coolant bad, and the drivers wheel bearing is shot. I'll go if Ray lets me ride with him.
QuestMCoupe 10-12-2004, 12:37 PM Sean, where are you leaking coolant from? Its not from the head is it?
SG_M3 10-12-2004, 12:44 PM no, its the thermostat housing.
I ordered a new radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat and housing. Just want to be safe.
hinzm3 10-12-2004, 12:47 PM If I go u can ride with me.
I want to ride with someone :(
Ill be back on my feet with a new E36 in the next few months hopefully :)

Teaguer 10-12-2004, 03:55 PM I'm in , for now at least .
Have to run it by the GF as I'm already spending Sunday at TMS .
hinzm3 10-12-2004, 04:09 PM whast at tms on sunday?
Teaguer 10-12-2004, 04:19 PM The IRL race is this Sunday .
I've been planning on going with a buddy from out of town for a while now .
But I have to run this event by the chick as I just spent last Saturday at a Bimmer meet in Flower Mound and I'm gonna attend the next club auto-x as well on the 24th .
She might frown upon me spending all my free time doing "guy" & "car" things .
TopGeek 10-12-2004, 04:28 PM What was the Bimmer event in Flower Mound?
Is there a schedule some where?
I did bike racing last weekened.. Talimena this weekend.. Autocross next weekend - I guess I'm just lucky in that my girlfriend enjoys the same stuff! She raced a 3 hour endurance race last Saturday and earned her full CMRA license :)
Teaguer 10-12-2004, 04:56 PM The Flower Mound deal was a meet that was originally organized on the Roadfly.org Texas board .
We kinda decided to have our own deal since BMP did not have their Octoberfest show .
A decent sized crowd was expected going in but it turned out to be a lack-luster turn-out due to the weather .
Despite the small turnout we did enjoy BMW shorfilms and plenty of benchracing .
Highlights of the meet were the Coors Light Girls stopping by with goodies and free beer . :buttrock
And also driving the E46 M3 Cabrio complete with SMG that John Roberts BMW was kind enough to send over was not bad either . :rolleyes
Sounds like your GF kicks_ass .
Dunno if i'd like my chick competing out on course though , what if she actually ended up being faster . :eyecrazy
bimmerd00d 10-12-2004, 05:25 PM How do you guys feel about some bbq in Idabel? Will we be in that area around lunchtime? My boss recommended a great bbq place there.

SecretAznSauce 10-14-2004, 06:33 AM i dunno joe, you might wanna wait it out till you get a beater,(it might happen agian) besides its cooler now and the adhesive may have a harder time bonding. I also noticed today, maybe cuz of the cooler weather, the crack in the prelude is spreading
TopGeek 10-14-2004, 10:12 AM My SUV windshield has been cracked for 2 years. Just not a priority to get it fixed I guess :)

TopGeek 10-14-2004, 08:04 PM I've no idea how many cars it'll be but we'll have fun regardless.
I know it got posted to some other BBS (audi, vw, etc) - if any one knows about those postings - please post a reminder on those boards that it is this Saturday. That could bring a bunch of cars of people who can't post on this board (but who know).
I know for sure Lloyd, Tony, and myself will be there Sat. morning in our cars. We'll probably also have a few friends as passengers for the "Fire Drill" pitstops :)
Cheers,

p.s. Firedrills will commence every time I get bored with the person riding with me. Warning: I have ADD :D
TxEVo8 10-14-2004, 08:40 PM I'm looking forward to the day regardless of how many show. Looks like good weather as well. I'll be rolling solo if anybody needs a ride.

QuestMCoupe 10-15-2004, 05:46 AM I didnt get the windshield fixed and wont until next week because of stupid insurance company but I'll probably roll anyway.
SecretAznSauce 10-15-2004, 05:52 AM damn joe, are you on the one post per day plan?

SOUTH WEST corner.
You can't see it from up on 75.
When you go WEST bound on 15th from 75 right on the corner there is a Shell on the north corner and a Fina (might be a closed fina) on the south corner. On the OTHER side (west) of the Fina on 15th is Einsteins. It's 100 yards from the I75 Overpass.
It is kind of sunken down in the parking lot (lower than the road). Its BEFORE you get to the little "bridge" and bend in the road.
TopGeek 10-15-2004, 08:57 AM I didnt get the windshield fixed and wont until next week because of stupid insurance company but I'll probably roll anyway.
Just roll. Cracked windshield is no biggy. I'll have my helmet along incase you lose your windshield completely.. then you can drive with the face sheild down <GRIN>
Kiddin'... they way they are designed you can't/won't lose it.
cterlizzi 10-15-2004, 12:26 PM Just in case someone is still trying to count.
I will definitely show up with my GF in a Boxster (sans tool kit because I'm trusting that way).
Jeff is still showing up in his EVO and Casey is still showing up in either his Corrado or his stock CTS if we can't get those manifold bolts to stay on the Corrado.
Rahul325 10-15-2004, 12:29 PM do we have a final head(car) count ?

Although I won't be in the E30 , I'll be in a black E36 cabrio that I'm selling at work .
AS far Einstein goes ....if you are going West on 15th you CAN'T turn left into Einsteins . You will have to go to the next light and turn around .
Better to turn South on the Southbound Central serviceroad and turn into the the first entrance just past the Diamond Shamrock station .
OK , off to bling out the Cabrio now . :cool

Hey guys... What happened to you all?
I was driving the black E30 and had a check engine light followed by an engine oil level light so I pulled over to address the issue. After letting her cool down and pooring a little oil in, everything was good to go so we took off to the lodge. Got there, discovered a 30 minute wait for a sh*tty looking buffet and decided to eat out of the vending machine. We didn't see another BMW until someone in an e46 M3 with his girlfriend pulled up. Saying that he got split up from the group too.
The hundreds of bikers on Harley's that were all driving slow as hell were too damn frustrating to deal with, so we headed to Mena to fill up and just drove back without doing the scenic route. Still found some fun roads though and had a great time. Got back to Plano around 8pm after stopping for food in Broken Bow.

Got back to Plano around 8pm after stopping for food in Broken Bow.

we ate at pizza hut in mena, you probably drove right past us.
531 miles was teh entire distance we drove. Didn't have too many problems with the cars. I had small brake issues, as did the yellow Corrado. Looked like everyone had a great time. Pics will be posted in another thread that topgeek will make when he gets home.
Teaguer 10-16-2004, 11:41 PM Hey Jason ,
I've got your yellow talkie that you let the one guy borrow .
I'll bring it to Mineral Wells next weekend . PM me if you need it sooner .
Glad to hear your E30 is OK .
Yeah you must have driven right through Mena when we were at Pizza Hut .
The wait at the lodge was like 1 hour so we booked it down to Mena to eat , then headed back for the scenic drive .

Thrilcker 10-16-2004, 11:49 PM Incredible Trip everyone! It was great to meet you all. I'll post photos when I'm not quite so tired. My trip odometer showed 570 miles when I parked at my place. One helluva day of driving.
Will share more later but wanted to shout out,
Cory (Red tire blown out 328i!)
